Germany's penalty-kick expulsion of Argentina, along with France's astounding outclassing of Brazil, has left the 2006 World Cup with four semifinalists from the same continent. This has not occurred since 1982. England lost in typically English fashion, and Italy breezed by an outmatched Ukraine. So, England and Argentina join Switzerland as teams to go home undefeated (a "loss" or a "win" from penalty kicks is technically a tie). Switzerland may be the only team ever to leave a World Cup having never conceded a goal (and perhaps also the only never to score in a penalty shoot-out). Italy is clearly the "evil" team remaining, given their penchant for diving, which means of course that Germany might go home...er, stay home. One of Germany's best midfielders might be suspended for participating in the mini-brawl that followed the ... read more

Do you know what the worst thing is about losing your luggage? It's not the lack of clothing (I worked in the same coffee bean t-shirt 5 days a week without washing). It's not even the lack of deodorant (we spend most of our time on cramped, sweaty, people-smelling undergrounds). It's the lack of Q-tips. Do you know how hard it is to go off the Q when you've been hiding a 2-tip a day habit for the last decade? Oh my God, my ears have never been so itchy. You start to go a little crazy with the withdrawals. You start thinking, if I just wrapped a little toilet paper around this paperclip... Drop the habit kids; before it gets you too. On another topic, we did eventually get our bags back (today we fly ... read more

God, Berlin is so hot! There don't seem to be fans or air conditioners anywhere and it is just broiling in this internet cafe and in all the subways. But enough bitching! Today I took my placement exam at the Goethe Institut. In a way it was sort of fun--I got to meet some of the Goethe Institut staff and take a peek at some of the students. The people I talked to were all _really_ nice and friendly. The other students were a remarkably hip looking bunch--hard to tell where they are all from, but not too many appeared to be obviously American (which I'm glad about!). The placement test part of it was less exhilerating, and actually rather discouraging as it made me realize (again) how much work I have to do. But, that's ... read more

Morning, drinking a cup of coffee in the living room. Not quite sure what time it is--maybe 6 or 7 am? Listening to the BBC--wow, I just got distracted because they announced that France beat Brazil, knocking them out of the world cup! Germany, France, Portugal and Italz will plaz each other next in the semi-finals. I need to find out when Germanz is playing next. If Germany wins again people are going to go crazy. I can see how this mania is contagious!... read more

Later on Sunday... I played tourist for a few hours today, visiting Unter den Linden. At the Brandenberger Tor, they have a huge stage and World Cup screen set up. I walked a little around the Reichstag but since it was Sunday I couldn't go in. There was a lot more I could have seen if I'd stayed longer but I felt tired and came home (still jet lagged). I want to go back and see the Jewish Holocaust memorial and also continue down Unter den Linden to see the rest of the street. I went down Friedrichstrasse and had lunch at a little place across the street from the former site of Checkpoint Charlie. Cafe Adler. A cute waitress complimented my tattoo, but the conversation fizzled when I couldn't understand what she said after that! ... read more

Slept for 2 1/2 hours, then unpacked. Felt much better--ate tomato and cheese toast and took a shower, finished my book and drank a beer. Feel a bit more human. Now it is getting to be dusk. I still don't have a clock but imagine it must be around 9 pm. The living room looks out onto the street, there's a pretty white stucco building with a Spanish tile roof across the street. The back is basically just an alley, but full of trees--earlier I fell asleep listening to the sound of the leaves rustling in the wind. Tomorrow I will go an an adventure and eat a big lunch out somewhere, I think. I've been reading through my guidebooks, but I'm going to see how I feel and stake out a plan in the morning. ... read more

I have honestly been so busy that i havent been able to update my blog. I am now at Susan and Gerhards house (relaxing) and i will now update you with all my happenings. (that which i can remember - haha) I planned to go to Prague after Amsterdam, but the train went via Berlin, so why not go there i thought. I had one train change over on the way and at that station I saw two boys with backpacks (the international symbol for backpackers) looking over their tickets and i overheard them discussing the same train changeover details. I asked them if they were going to Berlin and they were. So for the rest of the trip we ventured off working out the complicated train system together. Their names were Matt and Taylor and ... read more

Greetings from Germany! I haven't had much of a chance to update, as the past couple days have been crazy! While crazy though, they have also been fantastic! I actually still don't have much time, so I'm just going to give you all some highlights of what has happened in the past couple days. As you probably read in my last entry, I was on my way to Belgium. We only spent a day in Brussels but it was absolutely great. It's a very beautiful, smaller city, and the people were very friendly there. Definately more friendly than the French, but that's not a very difficult task to accomplish. In Brussels, we went to a very famous bar called the Delirium Cafe. They have the Guiness World Record for the most beer offered in any one ... read more

Well, I'm here! So exhausted, I don't know how much I can write now. City has manz trees, maples and other types. The apartment is cute, huge, and a little funky--no oven or freezer! I took a little nap and then went out to buy food. I was so hungry and tired I could barely think straight and the whole thing was far more time consuming and stressful than it need have been. Daphne (the person I'm subletting from) has no clocks in the apartment, which is making me even more disoriented. I think it's probably close to 2 pm? I should reallz go over to where she said there is a mall and try to get a Wecker, as I think I recall alarm clocks are called. Maybe a little later--or maybe it can wait ... read more
