I am the Elder on a Trans-national quest for adventure and elightenment spanning 2-3 continents (dependent upon where the "adventure" first appears (Personally my money's on LAX (thus making it 3 continents (but we'll see.)))) I and my crew, the Lovely Lady, the Financier, and the Triangle Mouth, will be rampaging tornado-like across Europe and South Africa bringing with us a pestilential rage of obnoxiously jovial commentary and stereotypical American ignorance. Jolly good time I'd say.

Hello all, Well I believe this is it for us. Tomorrow we take the long trek back to Johannesburg (6-7 hours) followed by the long flight to London (11 hours) followed by a brief layover and scramble through customs (2 hours) followed by the long flight to Los Angeles (11 hours) followed by a coma. I can't afford to stay on long so here's what's happened. Our hostel in Hazyview was the shadiest place ever and the staff was entirely drunk and the guy in charge (Darrel) didn't change his clothes once during our three night stay. We actually saw him once at the Kruger park gate just as we were embarking for a night drive but he ignored all of us (this was odd as he had addressed me by name that morning and had ... read more

And no, that's not a clever title. So my friends, it's now time for me to do a quick countdown of animal attacks. Chronologically speaking, the first was the vervet monkey who tried to steal Daniel's candybar. Unfortunately not on tape but Devan does a fairly accurate impression. Number two was the gibbon that swung out of a tree and ran at Devan (Not really an attack per say, but still pretty funny. Also not on tape but word on the street is that the gibbon does a pretty good impression). I'd love to say that the sharks made the list but as we spent the entire day (9-5) on the deck of a boat and only saw one shark, at a distance, from above the water, who then quickly swam away, leaving us nothing to ... read more

Let me start by saying that we're not in Nelspruit in spite of what it says on this blog. We are in fact in Hazyview (the Bootjack of South Africa). I no longer know what's been happening for the last week and am not even certain of what I wrote about last time. Here's a quick recap. For those who don't know, Brick and Fred are Ashley's parents at whose home we lived for four (three?) days while in Wilderness. Ashley is a co-worker of mine at George's office. She is South African. Wilderness is a beautiful coastal town scarcely on the eastern side of the point on South Africa where (supposedly) the Atlantic meets the Indian. Now for why I've lost total track of time.. The Bungee jump. There's a brief moment at the instant ... read more

As I am too full of delicious meats to think, this shall be brief. Today (Nay, the last 3-4 days) have been too overwhelming to really talk about. In all honesty, my mind can no longer process quickly enough to allow me to relate what we've done. Let me give you a quick run-down. In the beginning, we were in Capetown. We went up Table Mountain, a tremendous plateau in the shadow of which Capetown exists. From its summit you can see ocean in over 180 degrees. It's a natural monument beyond compare and... As you can see, I can't relate the experience. Next we went to Robben Island which is an experience I think everyone should have, if only to come face to face with what unbridled prejudice can do. Finally, we toured the townships, ... read more

Hello All! I know I'm jumping ahead and I don't have time to really go into detail, but you must know one thing and you must know it now. Today we went into the townships (shantytowns/hoovervilles/etc.) around Capetown. Yes, it was part of an official tour, but this tour is not like the "I rode a bus past Dustin Hoffman's house!" kind of tour. This was more like seven of us following a local into the homes and lives of people who had to build their own shacks, illegally, on government land all because of the racism of the establishment. Anyway, we can go into that later. What's important is that Stacey, Devan, Daniel and myself sat down inside a smoke-filled shack made of corugated steel, cardboard and scrapwood. We huddled around a fire in a ... read more

Due to the World Cup and all that, pickings were slim when it came to finding lodging in Berlin. Devan eventually discovered the Eastern Comfort Hostelboat floating in the river just on the western side of what remains of the Berlin Wall. Very cool. As you approach the boat you wander down along a stretch that runs along the river bank. Unlike the more touristy sections of wall, this one hasn't been picked down to the rebar by souvenir hungry tourists (Interesting note: the sections of wall that are most commonly seen have actually been themselves walled off to keep tourists away. Ironic?). Eventually you come to a breach in the wall through which you can see the psuedo-beach bar surrounded by a picket fence (our neighborhood tavern which due to their choice of music, we ... read more

Do you know what the worst thing is about losing your luggage? It's not the lack of clothing (I worked in the same coffee bean t-shirt 5 days a week without washing). It's not even the lack of deodorant (we spend most of our time on cramped, sweaty, people-smelling undergrounds). It's the lack of Q-tips. Do you know how hard it is to go off the Q when you've been hiding a 2-tip a day habit for the last decade? Oh my God, my ears have never been so itchy. You start to go a little crazy with the withdrawals. You start thinking, if I just wrapped a little toilet paper around this paperclip... Drop the habit kids; before it gets you too. On another topic, we did eventually get our bags back (today we fly ... read more

Dear everyone I know, Go to Prague. Now. No, don't wait. Go. Quickly, before everybody else I just told beats you there. In fact, don't even read this. Just go. Still here? Okay then. Here's the breakdown. I've never felt this way about a city before. Ever. Seriously dude, I think this one's the one. I'm gonna ask her out. I bought flowers and everything. I know I may have left an unsatisfying impression with my description of the airport before, but what I left out of that description is that, in spite of the rocky landing, we were overjoyed to see rain on the tarmac as we touched down. I've never been so happy to see rain (you know, given the horrific heat we'd been marinating in the whole time we were in Rome). The ... read more

So, a few months back, after I'd recieved the booking confirmations from our travel agent, I was sitting and sifting through the paperwork when I came across the info for our two flights around Europe. Now, when you see airlines going by the names Easyjet and Smartwings, it tends to give you pause as you stop to consider the possiblility that maybe these Barnum and Bailey names don't bode too well for your travel experience, but if you're anything like me, you follow your belief that bad things only happen to other people and you move on. Luckily for us, the flight from LA to London let us carry on everything (British Airways; a nice respectable name), and gave us hope that maybe the rest of the flights would be similar. Easyjet (From Paris to Rome) ... read more

Well, yesterday was quite the day. We headed out rather early to visit the Colloseum where we spent 10 euro on what was essentially nothing more than a way to bypass the line. It was supposed to be a tour but after about 15 minutes with our tour guide, we had no choice but to flee. "It was very important to be a good gladiator. Gladiator comes from the sword of the gladiators because the sword was called a gladio which is where we get the word for the gladiators from. It was very important to be a good gladiator... the would fight all kinds of animals too. They would fight lions, and tigers, and all other kinds of animals... they would fight elephants...and they were called gladiators which comes from the name of their sword..." ... read more
