I haven't updated because this is a travel blog and I have not been traveling. I spent $700 on a ski pass and I intend to use it until my money spent per day on skiing is in the single digits. All of this plus I make minimum wage so traveling is hard. I have been making new friends and progressing from equipment handler to instructor. I get certified next month by the Professional Ski Instructors Association or something like that. As the ski season comes to a close I have applied for summer jobs. The one I hope to get is a full-time accounting position. I came to Germany because I didn’t want a desk job but now I decided that I would rather work more and spend more than work less and spend next ... read more
I have made it safely. The flights over here weren't too bad. Once I landed it was 'hurry up and wait' for the next half day. I live in "the shining" (as in the horror movie) part of the living quarters, so named because this was the psychiatric ward when it was a Nazi hospital. This might explain why I am up at 1 AM local time writing this blog. I went to sleep around 8 and now I am ready for my first day. The group I am with is full of hard core skiers and adventurers. I am the only one from the south. Apparently we are the envy of the rest of the staff because we have such a glamorous job. I went out with some veterans this evening and they were accommodating ... read more
The job I have in Alpine Adventures is really very cool. I am learning about all the cool things in the area because I tell people about them everyday. I give people directions on how to give their tickets and how to take the train, I give directions on driving and explain tours that I myself have never been on. But no worries, I will definitely be going on these tours because they all sound awesome. It is nice that there are people here who have been here so long and really know the area. The other day I hiked the Wank (pronounced Vank...) with a couple guys and it was awesome because that is not somewhere I would have thought to hike myself. It took us about 3 hours to get up the mountain and ... read more
Germany's Rooftop
Published: February 20th 2011Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Garmisch-Partenkirchen » ZugspitzeWoo-hoo ! We're at the top of Germany ! Today, our little group decided to visit the very south of Germany, which also happens to be the tallest part of Germany! That's right - we went skiing on the Zugspitze in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. That has a nice ring to it. At least, it would if you skied. I did not. Instead, I rented skiis, walked out the door, looked down the slope, and walked right back inside. No way was I going to try to work my way down a sheer drop in those freaking uncomfortable ski boots. I grew up in Illinois. To those of you unfamiliar with the particulars of the midwest of the United States, people from Illinois are endearingly known as "flat landers." It's pretty self explanatory - we're great at farming, but ... read more

Today I went on an excursion with the school into the Alps. They were even more beautiful than I thought they would be. At 9:15am we got on the train for Garmisch, a town right next to the Alps. Unfortunately, there was construction on the tracks so after an hour on the train we had to get off, catch a bus to the next train station, then take a train from there the rest of the way. But we made it. We started by going through a gorge called Partnachklamm that led right to the foot of Alps. The gorge was breath taking. We walked along the side of the gorge on a small ledge. Beautiful blue water rushed through the gorge below and we went through several caves. As soon as you get to the ... read more
To the top of Germany
Published: September 28th 2010Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Garmisch-Partenkirchen » ZugspitzeMan did I sleep well. Its 7:30 and I’m up rolling out of bed and heading for the bathroom. Everyone’s asleep and I’m going to get up shower and have a nice quite breakfast. Woo, Hoo I love these Germany baths there the size of a phone both for midgets. I’m finishing my shower when the door flies open; Hey I’m in here, as Heady walks into the bathroom. She screams, I’m hollering STOP!!!!!!!. Well my quite morning just went south. I’m out of the bath and downstairs trying to not make eye contact with either Bill or Hedi. The Inn Keeper meets at the bottom of the steps asking in his broken English “VIS EWERYSHING OK”? I respond Ya Ya Ya…. As I make my way to the breakfast table he’s following me “VHATS DER ... read more

It’s time to get up and get ready; I want to get on the 6:30 AM flight to ATL. Aren’t we booked on the 7:30 flight, yes but I want to try for the 6:30 because it has more seats. I thought the 7:30 had enough seats did something change. No I just want to get to Atlanta. So I rolled out of bed and looked at the clock, its 4:30 AM. So it begins Kirsten and I are heading to Germany, Bill and Hedi are already there and waiting for us to pick them up in Wangan. Never has a skyline provoked so much intrigue and fear in the same breath. This was the thought as I disembarked a little mountain train in Southern Germany. Before I elaborate further, we have a couple of days prior to this that require getting you up to speed with. After seven months of employment and the coldest winter on record in Amsterdam, Kat and I decided on a much needed holiday. South of France, Mediterranean, blue waters, white sands and cocktails I hear you say. No….Germany. Kat came up with a family meeting adventure and I was, in some cases, reluctantly in agreement. This decision was made five weeks before leaving. Over these weeks we planned and planned and from somewhere came up with the great idea of climbing Germany’s highest mountain, Zuigspitze, and meeting her ... read more
We had a week off of school, so my friend Deanna and I decided to take a mini European vacation. We traveled to Garmisch- Partenkirchen, Germany, Munich, Germany, Innsbruck, Austria, and Salzburg, Austria. First Garmisch: After a very long day of travel we rolled into the cold sleepy town of Garmisch- Partenkirchen, Germany. Deanna’s boyfriend’s parents are retired and live in Garmisch. We spent the majority of the trip staying with them. It was very late when we arrived, but even in the dark I could tell this was a town straight out of a fairy tale. Everything had a fresh layer of snow covering it. Deanna told me to look out the window, and even though everything was dark, I could just see the outline of the Alps. Garmisch is a town that is nestled ... read more
