We have spent three days in St Marie sur la mer. A small seaside town on the med coast and in the Camargue area. The highlights were the White horses of the area and the unique cattle, the mistral wind that blows from the sea and keeps temperatures comfortable. We were surprised to find so much Roman history in the area. The Amphitheaters in Arles, which was the second most important city after Rome at some time in the Roman Empire. Anyway we arrived and I didn’t like the seaside feel of the place, large impersonal campsite and inflated prices for the wealthy boat owners who frequent the place, however Dee said to stick with it and she was right, we stayed for three nights enjoying the long walks along the beach with Horace. As we ... read more

Note: All the events in this entry occurred in early February 2007. For more updated trips and entries please refer back to this blog at a later date. An updated trip or entry will NOT include a note like this! Thanks and enjoy! When I first moved to Aix-en-Provence and started studying at Centre d'Aix, I was informed that students had the opportunity to go on trips sponsored by the program (for mor information, please refer to the entry entitled "My Move to Aix-en-Provence"). The first trip was scheduled as a weekend trip along the French Riviera and would include the following destinations: Nice, Monaco/Monte Carlo, St. Paul de Vince and Cannes. Even though I had already been to Nice and Monaco/Monte Carlo (for more information, please refer to entries entitled "Christmas in Nice," and "Day ... read more

Our amazing concierge, Gregory, told us about this fun Irish pub called Morrison’s. We got paninis (which had really good olive oil on them, I think this area is known for its olive oil) and then changed and headed over to Morrison’s for some drinks. When we got there, it was almost empty but we sat down at the bar and ordered some ciders (I know, girly). There were two bartenders that were really fun, they kept making all four of us shooters that were really good. We were having so much fun with them, we ordered Despardos, which is like Tequila infused beer: more delicious than it sounds. The guys from the night before were at the beach again, so we headed for the beach. It was another night of language and culture exchange disguised ... read more

Today we slept in again, zut! We got ready quick, bought some yogurt and pain au chocolate at the Monop’ and some fruit at the outdoor market for brunch. We went to the beach again, were it was pretty crowded already at 11am. We decided that here, people are either fat or skinny, no middle ground. There are a lot of people that are way tanner than they should be… there is a point when it just doesn’t look good anymore. And naturally, we saw many women topless tanning. Mary and I felt a little left out actually. We kind of want to do it but we realized that we are so white underneath that it would be obvious that we are first-timers… so we’ll see. The men wear those weird bathing suits that are kind ... read more

So I woke up in Barcelona to find that most of the crew had already gone ashore as crew shore leave had been granted early.I grabbed my stuff and headed out to see what I could find. On the bus I met up with one of the dancers, Franchesco, and we decided to go around the city together as we both wanted to see La Grasse Famillia (apologies for awful spelling). Over the course of the afternoon we spent 3 hours walking around Barca, trying to take in as much as we can and stopping for expresso/Gaudis buildings. Barca is such a vibrant and colourful city, everywhere you turn theres something else that assaults your colour perception wether it be fruit, veg, birds, tents, people or even the buildings. We found La Grasse Familia and were ... read more

Cannes, France (My BIRTHDAY) We walked along the beach for an hour or so until it was time to take the bus to Nice. I let Mom pick out the tour since I didn't know which one I wanted to do. So I let Mom pick that one since I was going with the flow. Once we got to Nice we took a small, open air tourist tram through the narrow streets of Nice Old Town. We passed the Flower Market and we climbed the Castle Hill or a view of the city and bay. That took up most of the day until 4:45 then we took the bus back to the ship to get some food. It was formal night so we had to dress up very nice and look good. Oh wait I only ... read more

Cannes is famous for the film festival that is held there every May where the stars come out. I wanted to see where they go, and the red carpet areas that I have saw on the television. Just seventeen stops on the train and I would be there I thought. This sounds like a lot of stops, and it is, however at each stop, the train is only there at the stop for a few minutes, and it is off again. Once again as before my eyes were truly beholding beauty at it’s finest. The train ride exiting the Monaco/Monte Carlo area was simply put very beautiful. After about an hour and a half on the train, I arrive at the Cannes stop. I exit the train, and once again I wander where to go. I ... read more

Not much to report from Cannes, lovely beaches and sunsets, and yummy seafood. Scott and I decided to take time off from our travels and just beached the days away in Cannes. Lovely. The food was outstanding! Lots of fish, heads and all, eager servers there to clean the fish tableside (thank goodness cuz we didn't know where to start...the head, tail???). Like I said, not much to report, enjoy the photos!! ... read more

The title of this post is not at all meant to describe Cannes. I found Cannes to be quite the opposite. It is in your face with lots beautiful people who have lots of money, gorgeous beaches, and a intense nightlife. I found it to be probably like Miami or Cancun as a great vacation destination, but not much beyond that. For our group, it was the first time we experienced immense crowds, as most of Europe takes August off for vacation and goes to places such as Cannes. But it provided a great place to take a break from a rigorous travel schedule and enjoy the sun and beaches. Rather my title is meant to describe my new perfume - "Todd-A-Licious". France has a huge perfume industry and in order to learn best about it, ... read more
