Dear All After a really amazing start to my pre-Christmas mini-trip to Monaco and the south of France, I bade farewell to my time in the second smallest country in the world, as I headed towards a bus stop for a bus which would take me back to France. My apartment building was right at the top of the Monaco mountain side, and I was pretty much heading straight down to the central Place d'Armes - there were so many steps down, and I really couldn't imagine doing the route in reverse. My knees were aching not long into this step-filled journey, and this was just going down! I could have taken the train again back to Nice, but had read about this amazing bus connection, which at 1.5 euros was not only a serious bargain, ... read more

Today we turned left when we came to the seafront and can now safely report that we have “Done Cannes”. Not been here before though we’ve been along most of the south coast of France at one time or another. No doubt that the best, indeed the only way to get along this coast is on 2 wheels. Traffic jam ? Not on a scooter which is narrow enough to zip along the outside of the queue. We rode right along the bay and considered stopping for a swim but decided against. I was very suitably attired for a scooter ride and a sea swim in my costume (as a sun top) and shorts but once wet…… so we decided to wait. We hit a real traffic jam as we went past the old port as ... read more

Hello my fellow travellers! Today me and Andreas headed out together with François to continue the tour of the old town that was interrupted a couple of days ago. François is very knowledgeable about this area and the tour he gave us was really good. We got a great deal of good information and visited some of the most beautiful churches in Nice. Some of them was truly breathtaking such as the Cathedral of Saint Reparata and the Church of Saint Rita! However, the most beautiful of them all was the Chapel of Mercy which is beyond words or picture in how vividly decorated it is inside. We also stopped by the Lascaris Palace but we didn't actually visit it, it seemed quite nice though but we didn't quite have the time for it now. François ... read more

Excursion to Nice and Eze and perfume factory today We slept in this morning we were a little bit late for breakfast but Giancarlo said don't worry about it, we arrived at our meeting point a smidgen late but never mind we are in yacht club and can do whatever we want, today we have to take a tender boat to the port of Cannes that was a little bumpy. We got on the bus and headed off to Nice, it is very beautiful here you can see why people rave about it the sea is 3 shades of blue, beautiful dark blue then lighter, then very light blue near the shore and crashing to white waves just stunning, we had an hour in Nice to look around found some Nic-Nac shops, we lost two passengers ... read more

This morning after breakfast we headed off on a day trip to Cannes. Once again we had decided to make the journey by bus so that we could see the sights along the way. Bernie had researched the bus to Cannes too and knew that we needed to catch the Bus 200 on the main street through town at Albert Rue. Damn it, we were in the wrong place for the bus again! We found a bus stop, but not one that Bus 200 stops at. At least we did find a map that showed the Bus 200 route; we just had to head back the way that we had come until we found the stop at Albert 1er. We have no idea what the difference is between a Rue and a 1er??! Because the bus ... read more

Cannes makes headlines every May when it swarms with thousands of movie stars, wannabees, film moguls, fans and reporters, all there for the prestigious Film Festival. The rest of the year it’s a very livable city of about 80,000 with a bit of everything the Riviera has to offer. More at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cannes. Many of the “belle époque” palaces such as the Earl of Brougham’s “Villa Eleonore-Louise” are still standing, though most now serve as office or apartment buildings. In addition to some of Europe’s finest hotels, the beachfront Croisette boulevard boasts elegant shops frequented by the owners of visiting yachts, and of course it’s also the site of the Film Festival Theatre. Hi everyone Malaga was a really quaint place to while away a few hours. Warm, sunny and beautiful light. We stumbled back to the ship full of rose’ and beer and good memories of our first Port in Spain. Today we docked in Cannes and were transferred via tender boat. It held about 300 passengers so it wasn’t exactly a tinny. Because we were so close, we caught a train to Monaco. It just had to be done. Best 28 euro train fare we’ve ever spent. The trip ran along the cost and we saw some tiny beaches (20 feet of gravel) being lapped by Mediterranean Sea. It really is azure blue. Not sure I’m keen to lie on rocks. People don’t look all that comfortable. From the other side of the train we saw cliffs ... read more

This morning we have arrived in a new destination. Although Roisin and I have been to France many times before, we have never visited Cannes, on the French Riviera. Home to many famous artists through the ages such as Claude Monet and, in his later years, Pablo Picasso who are supposed to have been inspired by the vivid colours and clean fresh air of the region. Where Picasso is concerned I'm not too sure that it would have mattered where he got his inspiration from whether it was sitting on top of a gas works, in a cave or in an igloo, I'm sure the results would have been the same. Nowadays Cannes is most famous for its annual film festival where it is chic for the rich and famous to be seen promoting their latest ... read more

Well its time to be among the stars. Day trip to Cannes, home of the Cannes film festival. I wake up early in the morning and it is raining, a lot. I went back to sleep and slept in a bit( for me which is 7:30) and with this much rain, I decide not to run. Im on vacation right? So after I lazily wake up and get ready, I head back down to the Gare Thiers and catch a train, this time in the opposite direction. After about 30 minutes I arrive in a very cloudy Cannes. From the map it seems really easy to navigate. There seems to be two main arteries. Rue de la Croisette and Rue D'Antibes. I head down a side street, a funny name, rue 24 aout. Which is 24th ... read more

Friday, September 28, 2012 The ship arrived in Cannes, France this morning and we were met by the sight of numerous sailboats. We learned a Regatta was going on this weekend. Since we had no booked tours, we enjoyed a leisurely breakfast in the dining room. At ll:00 we tendered to the dock, and spent the next 3 hours walking the near downtown streets of Cannes. Along the waterfront we stopped at the Casino Les Princes and actually won 56 Euros. That was fun! So were some of the views along the beach, you know what I mean! A quick lunch once back aboard, watched the boys enjoy the waterslides, then a short nap before dinner. Graffiti Classics was an entertaining show we went to after dinner. It was a quartet that played classical music in ... read more
