Plecam spre Oulu unde ne asteapta varul Ciprian si Raluca.
Today is our opportunity to see a real Finnish town as we only have one more day before leaving Finland and returning to Sweden. Bob unloaded the scooter from the garage and after making the trek to the showers and also reporting the non-working wifi to reception again we scootered into Oulo. I wanted to take the easy route, the cyclist path, but Bob, understandably refused and we went the long way round on the dual carriageway. Not hot today like yesterday but ok and the bit of rain which fell during the day was not a problem. Not a lot to see in Oulu but pleasant for a bit of sightseeing and a good chance to see more ‘Finland’. Visited the cathedral and then found our way down to the waterfront. This is quite a ... read more
All’s well again with the weather. Can’t do with persistent rain like yesterday’s, it stops us doing things and that is bad. Woke to glorious blue sky, albeit rather later than planned as stayed up late again watching the lovely midnight sun over the river. Packed up as quickly as we could and headed off for the Arctic Circle (Napapiiri), Finnish style this time. Lots of Santa’s Elves about the place as this is Santa’s village, supposedly where he lives, and the site for the Santa’s postbox where children send their Xmas letters to Santa. Stood on the Arctic Circle line and took photos and bought a few presents, as shops excellent, including really nice traditional hat for Emily’s birthday. Used Santa’s postbox to post things but not Emily’s as not sure which is her current ... read more

Published: October 20th 2007Europe » Finland » Northern Ostrobothnia » OuluSo, if any of you remember me mentioning this in my other blogs, on the Saturday and Sunday after I returned from my school trip I was supposed to go to an Inbound camp in Oulu, Finland. So, here's some stuff about that weekend. So, on Saturday morning, after my 1 hour of sleep, I woke up at 5:00 AM. I ate a big breakfast and packed some snacks for the train. I didn't want to have to buy food at the train stations, but I wouldn't get to Hailuoto, the island near Oulu where the Inbound camp was, until like 3:30, and obviously I would have to eat again before then. So, I made myself some sandwiches and my hostmom had bought me a chocolate bar for a snack. How nice! Then, a little before ... read more
Hi everyone we are in Raahe in Finland the birthplace of our new sister in law, aunty etc Anu having a great time. the sun does not set here until around 12 oclock at night, in fact at 11 thirty last night it was still shining away! very amazing and it is önly dark for a couple of hours, and not completely dark at that. Trevor and Anu's wedding was fantastic with a great ceremony taken by a really interesting woman priest, who was in her words at one thirty at night "the drunkest virgin on the bus" back to our beach houses where she continued to party until at least 4 oclock in the morning. A really great lady. Anu looked gorgeous and the ceremony was in both english and finnish with translations done all ... read more
Day 22: Week 4: Sunday 28th. May 2006: Clear and sunny - lovely: Bussed to Oulu and staying in a self contained (great kitchen) cabin in the delightful camping ground at Nallikari. We look forward to doing our own cooking again and having a decent meal, though we only had a snack tonight. We are a stone's throw from the water (Bothia Sea) and beach. Bus stop at the end of driveway takes us into town. Fantastic storm tonight, thunder and lightning. Day 23: 29th. May 2006: Raining: Into town by bus and had a walk around. Very pretty, interesting place with many beautiful buildings, parks and gardens. Home for lunch then a walk into town in the pouring rain across a long bridge, but I was determined to take some video here. so we ... read more
Hey Everyone, Were writing to you from lovely Oulu where its always raining!!! We arrived on May 22 at 9 pm and it was beautiful out. The sun set at 11:00 pm and we got to watch some of it from the ocean side beach near our cabin. Unfortunately, that was the only sun we have seen in our 5 days here... We finally found the library where we could use the internet, but low and behold, there was some sort of holiday yesterday and everything was closed. Our campsite is awesome and we've been enjoying our time in this small, picturesque town. Tomorrow morning, we leave for Helsinki again where we will spend the remainder of our trip before heading home on Tuesday morning. Finland has been an excellent place to visit and we will ... read more
