THE KINGDOM OF DENMARK July 1 Arriving in Copenhagen Crossing another border and once again I am reminded that we don't get our passports stamped. Sweden and Denmark are part of the EU agreement that doesn't require passport checks. Such a different experience from my earlier travels abroad! I had made reservations to stay in a room at Lone Hardt's apartment near Tivoli in Copenhagen and she had sent me maps and directions on how to get there months before. When we got off the train I followed Lone's advice and headed out the exit away from the main station. I found an elevator big enough for our bags to get us up to street level and I was astonished to hear Beethoven's 9th playing rather loudly in the elevator! I thought I had come to ... read more

I don't think i've ever been as unprepared for a trip as I was for this one. I needed it, definitely, but I just couldn't be bothered to plan. I knew roughly what I wanted to see, sort of. The Carlsberg factory for example, seemed like a good start to a holiday. And it was. Sat outside in the sun, drinking a beer and catching up with a friend is always going to be a good start. The museum bit; I don't think I've ever been to a museum as bad as that one, and that includes the hat museum in stockport. The best part of it was a room with some bottles in it. Maybe I missed the point somewhere, there should be signs. The day had started badly, a 6am wake up is never ... read more

The last sixty miles as the ship heads to Oslo follows the stunning Oslofjord where hills rise up on each side of the ship and houses become more prevalent as you near the city. It was Diamond Jubilee Day (or another one) on the ship and when we entered the pool area we saw it had had been transformed overnight into a Village Fete scene with games and activities lining the pool. Thankfully none included getting into the pool. There were skittles, guess the weight of the cake, count the pound coins, name the artist, any number of other “village fete” games and a large amount of Pimms flowing. With many a Britpop anthem being played many got involved in the goings-on to try and win the prizes on offer. However, they struggled to grab my ... read more

Thursday, 31 May - Lubeck, Germany It was time to say goodbye to Brugge and let it rip on the German Autobahns. As great as it was to visit, in hindsight we should have left Belgium off the itinerary, as Brugge was a major detour and we’ll still need to return to see the rest of the country. We should have added an extra night to Amsterdam and Berlin, but oh well – you don’t know these things. However, it was a sorry day for driving and so I’m going to call it “The Great Disappointment”. Here are the stats as to why: 700km of road (200km in Belgium, 100km in Netherlands, 400km in Germany) 700km of continual trucks – thousands of them! 400km of road works (approximately 6 of each 8km, with only 2km of ... read more

Gubbio, Italy Every year on May 15th, Gubbio celebrates the Corsa dei Ceri. Three teams, devoted to one of three saints, run through the town streets, with each team carrying a statue of their saint mounted on a wooden prism, 4 meters tall and weighing about 350 kilograms. Green Tuborg, Copenhagen, Denmark In 2002, I met a group of international students at DTU, a university located just north of Copenhagen, Denmark. Beautiful, life-long friendships developed and 25 of us decided to reunite back in Copenhagen, with green tuborgs in hand, for our 10-year reunion. Grindelwald, Switzerland It was cloudy in Zurich. We took 4 trains in 2 hrs with less than 5 mins to connect to each train. We arrived exactly on time. I love the efficiency of Swiss trains. We stepped off the train in ... read more

Copenhagen was very exciting! Emily and I were exhausted on Thursday morning when we had to wake up at 3am to get to the airport. We probably didn’t have to even get up that early, and its safe to say that both of us were not in the best of moods that morning. We did make it to the airport easily and were comfortable on the way to Copenhagen. After we got to the airport and had some coffee, Emily and I were very hyper as we made our way to the hostel. We waited for our friends there for about an hour until they showed up. It was really exciting to see people from back home in London! We woke up nice and relatively early today excited that there was sun streaming through our window! So we got up checked out, dropped our stuff at the station and headed back to Tivoli for some fun and frolics on the rides!! It was a mon so there was no queues which was amazing! We started on a relatively tame rollercoaster just to get going and then they got more amazing slash scarier! Ben was not a happy chappy on the really high ones like the big drop but was a trouper and did all but one of them and ejoyed all but one of those!! :) He did a few more games and won enough chips not for the giant robot I wanted sadly but for a lil giraffe keyring which has been proudly named ... read more

We woke up to a rainy copenhagen today!! But we were super excited cos we had scoped out a really nice looking brunch place to go in a book one of my patients gave me! Meant to be the best cafe in copenhagen for brunch! So we got up, dressed and headed off to explore with mellow yellow (my dublin umbrella!) Ben with no help of myself found this cute lil cottage looking place with gorgeous water views- very very old but when we looked closer we saw that it was shut and there was a sign infront in danish. We had no idea what it said but we left with an idea that it said it was shut due to hygiene reasons! We were so gutted cos were so excited and really didnt have an ... read more

5am start this am! Living in Edinburgh is sliiightly more time consuming travel wise! But totally worth it! :) So we were up bright and early and taxied (thanks kpmg) to the airport to fly to London, had a 4 hour stopover in London to hang out at Stanstead - woop woop! So we smelt of every perfume and cologne under the sun, ben bought a gorgeous fossil watch and we explored every nook and cranny of each shop! Can safely say wev done stanstead! Anywho we passed the time well and then jumped on our ryan air flight to Malmo. Arrived in Sweden after an hour 15 flight and found a bus to copenhagen. Within 45 mins we were in the centre of copenhagen, Absolutely gorgeous day so we were a bit gutted that wed ... read more
