Copenhagen was very exciting! Emily and I were exhausted on Thursday morning when we had to wake up at 3am to get to the airport. We probably didn’t have to even get up that early, and its safe to say that both of us were not in the best of moods that morning. We did make it to the airport easily and were comfortable on the way to Copenhagen. After we got to the airport and had some coffee, Emily and I were very hyper as we made our way to the hostel. We waited for our friends there for about an hour until they showed up. It was really exciting to see people from back home in London!
Dakin (from Pennsylvania), Oscar (my flat mate, from England), and Meg (one of my other flat mates from England) all met up with us. After we dropped our luggage off we began to go exploring. We walked along the canal and through many beautiful buildings to one of the oldest parts of Copenhagen. We saw the oldest hotel and also the oldest department store there. We ate in the food court at the department store and all had traditional Danish dishes,
and Meg ended up getting lost. We looked for about an hour but we never were able to find her. We figured that she would just go back to the hostel, so we kept moving on. We explored more of the old part of Copenhagen and then went back to the hostel. Of course, Meg was there.
We checked into our room, which was very nice for a hostel. It was more like a hotel, really. It had 3 sets of bunk beds and a private bathroom. We also had an amazing view because it was a corner room. Copenhagen is so beautiful with all of its old copper buildings, churches and towers. All of us walked to the royal gardens next and began to explore. We wanted to go into the palace, but it was closed. It was amazing to look at anyways though. It was much more impressive than Buckingham palace, and had three massive, beautiful gardens surrounding it. We then tried to find a cheap place to eat dinner. All of Copenhagen is very expensive, so it was kind of hard for us. After dinner we all were pretty exhausted, so we headed back to the
hostel. We ended up just playing uno for the rest of the night and then heading to bed.
On Friday we got up early to start our day. Emily and I went to a small café that we had found on one of the canals with some cool people who ran it. They also had kayaks, we decided to kayak on the river. They made some of the best croissants that I had ever had, and the coffee was great. Emily and I then put our gear on and went in a dual person kayak. It was quite the adventure! We had to be careful of boats and in total we went through 2 canals and across the main river. It was scary but a ton of fun. Even now my arms are very sore.
We then went back and showered before we met up with everyone else. We all walked to a small Danish café another old part of town. I had a very interesting dish of some sort of raw fish with things on it. It ended up being very good, but very different! Then we went to a church with a large tower that you
could climb up to look over Copenhagen. Most of the climb wasn’t too bad, but the top of it is out doors and spirals around the top. It was terrifying, but an amazing view. You could even see some of Sweden!
After, we all went to Christinana (I’m not sure if I spelled that right). That area used to be army barracks, but was taken over by hippies in the 70’s. This was a place where it was said that you could openly buy weed on push street, but it was supposed to have been cleaned up by the police (as my guide book said). This was not really true. It was an awesome area full of hippies, but there was defiantly a whole street filled with vendors. It was very interesting. They did have a cool bar that we hung out at though with an amazing live band. It was fun just to chill there. After, we went to a nearby park and had a picnic for dinner. It was only 9pm at this point, but everyone was so exhausted that we headed home and all were asleep by 10.
Because we all went to bed so
early, we all were wide-awake at 8am this morning. We got up and checked out of the hostel and checked our bags. From there we walked to where the boat tours start, but it was pouring rain and it didn’t seem like much fun. We ended up just going to get more Danish food at the same department store that we went to on the first day. We explored for a little bit more, and then headed to the airport. I am now on the plane heading back to London!
My travels were all so educational, historically and culturally. Emily and I got along the whole time, which was really nice. We both had our grouchy moments, but never towards each other. I absolutely loved every city that we went to, which was also nice. Each one was very different from the other, and offered something completely different. I am ready to be back in London now though. By the time we get home everyone will be back, and it will be nice to be with all of them for the next month. I just wish time would stop!
