I bought the entrance tickets, 80 Kc each, which is about $3.00, and then we took our jackets to the cloak room. I showed my camera to the lady there and made a motion of taking a picture. She pointed back to the museum shop/ticket office. "Don't bother buying the ticket," Nancy said. "We probably won't want to take any pictures." "O-kay," I replied. We walked up the steps to the main exhibition area. "Look at the floor!, Nancy exclaimed. "Go back and buy the ticket so you can take pictures." -Bill took nice pictures last year of the various mosaics we saw around Prague. He put them on this travelblog and a man who has an Internet site featuring lovely mosaics from around the world saw the pictures and asked permission to put them on ... read more

Several readers have commented on the interesting and beautiful rocks and minerals at the National Museum. Here are some more photos of samples on display at the museum. Hey when you have a winner in blog photos why not put up more and more and more?? Look for rocks on days when we have less about which to chat. Bill just took a photo of the vanishing snow pile. Part of it was so small we aren't sure it will show up in a blog pix. But yesterday the Sarka Valley was really icy when I took a walk. The puddles of the day before had frozen over in the -2C overnight temps. This a.m. it's -5 so I suppose I will find the same if I walk today. This is the day to head to ... read more

-Each morning around 5 or 5:30 I have been looking out the bedroom window at this patch of snow. I figured when it disappeared the snow would be gone for the winter. Last Friday I was pretty sure it was about gone, Saturday I was sure and then it snowed like wild again. But today it was really apparent it was on-its-way-out. So I got Bill up and had him take a picture of this 'my pile' and of the other 'maybe it's my pile of snow'. We just got back from downtown and yes 'my pile' of snow is GONE. The other one is smaller but still there. I hope it is not waiting for another snow to build it back up again. Last year I almost cried when the last of the snow melted. ... read more

One of our student friends bought standup tickets for nine of us to go to see Aida at the National Theater. Amazingly, a standup ticket costs only about $1.25, that's right $1.25. A standup ticket in Chicago is at least $50.00 and I have no idea how much a person would pay in New York. The theater is unbelievably beautiful. Some of the paintings on the ceiling seem, to me, to carry a Biblical theme. Others do not and I could not determine or find on the Internet any information on the paintings other than that they were done by an artist named, Zenisek. I was not sure about taking pictures inside the theater. Upon seeing others snapping photos and taking videos I also took pictures. Not long before the performance began an announcement, in Czech ... read more

A-hoy! Hey guys, we are alive and well after a week of good times and lots of snow in the captial of the Czech Republic. It was a lot colder than anticipated, so we bought some warm jackets from the local op-shop. It´s an old city with lots of cathederals, beautiful old buildings and a castle - just walking around is almost enough to experience it. the streets were full of culture with little shops selling puppets and those dolls that you open and then there is an other smaller one inside. (there was some beautifulll artworks on them) They also like their glass objects, we saw everything from glass varses to chairs made of glass. We were also blessed with a couple of street bands, one jazz band was playing in the old town square, ... read more

The National Museum has on display one of the largest collections anywhere. I didn't think about counting the number of cases in the display. Suffice it to say that it fills two large rooms, each with thousands of samples for the public to view. I figure, radiation wise, it is one of the "hottest" rooms in the Czech Republic. Here is a sample of the many pictures I took of the collection ................ --I'm the rock 'nut' in our family. We always have arguments when we are ready to leave a country and come home about whether or not I can carry home the rocks I have found and MUST have. So, I was totally crazy in this museum. We spent hours in the minerals section and have to go back to see the other parts ... read more

The National Museum dominates the upper end of Wencelas Square. The huge building is a Neo-Renaissance style building and was completed in 1890. The exhibits center mostly on mineralogy, archaeology, anthropology and natural history. We think it is well worth a visit, especially if you are interested in rocks and minerals. The rock and mineral collection is one of the largest in the world. ... read more

I liked Cesky Krumlov, but at the time i was there was durin low season and there wasnt many other people around excep for a high number of japanese tourists , after walkin around lookin at the town, watchin amature hockey games, my time here at night was quite boring and uneventful so id just go to sleep early. nothing very exciting happend here but it was still worth the visit. the place itself is very scenic i liked it.. after 2 nights here id seen enough of the place to leave to Brno.. to get to Brno a needed to catch a packed bus to Ceske Budejovice where i had to stand with my bags on for around 45 minutes unable to move and people pushin and shovin past. it wasnt the most comfortable bus ... read more

It was snowing so much that they shut down the airport. I enjoyed my day by walking around the city and taking pictures. I took trams and metros random places to explore more areas of Prague. Luckily it was the last snowy day but it was a nice big climax. I was at a hotel using the internet (to write a paper) and people kept asking about when the airport would open. Prague is not used to a lot of snow. Normally after it snows most of it disappears shortly after. This was a very nice day on my own with the snow. ... read more

If we had been home this snow would have been from a Nor'easter. Here, I have no idea if they have a name for BIG snows. A young couple we met on the trail, who grew up here, said this is the deepest snow they have ever seen in Prague. By afternoon the snow had tappered off a bit and we decided to see if the trail was clear enough to walk. By this time there was about two feet of snow on the ground. When we reached the trail we were pleased and surprised to see that the trail was clear enough for us to walk. We didn't have to wade through two feet of snow. There were other walkers and quite a few people on cross country skies. I was a bit surprised that ... read more
