Let’s begin with a small, apologetic explanation. When a student of society, culture, and language teaching becomes immersed into a city such as the one I am in currently in, he may forget that people thousands of miles away are still thinking of him. As I write this, I realize that I have neglected you, as I have been here 8 days now without an update. I will try my hardest to never let this happen again. However, here is the reason I am tardy: This city has everything anyone has ever told me, combined with countless things that I have now experienced myself. Prague- Praha here, is truly the city of enchantment and mystery. Freezing cold days and nights, coupled with gothic architecture at every turn make Prague a delight to be a part of. ... read more

I have always wanted to go to Praha (also known as Prague), after hearing so many tales of its beauty. So early in my semester abroad in Rotterdam I had booked a flight on Smart Wings, a low-cost start-up airline, to Prague and invited classmates to come along. A few weeks ago, Smart Wing decided to cancel the flight. Weary from so much traveling already, the couple of us from Rotterdam decided not to go to Prague after all. Last week, my fellow exchange student Gretchen, also from Berkeley and who is now studying in Barcelona and traveling all over Europe every weekend, emailed me about our plans in Prague. Of course I had forgotten she had considered going to Prague as well, and now she had a confirmed plane ticket and would be the only ... read more

Prague is probably the perfect destination for a long weekend away. It has the sights, the food, the drink, the culture, the people and the low prices! We went to Prague relatively late in the whole "cheap weekends away to Prague" phenomenon. We were slighly apprehensive that the previous years of cheap drink-fuelled holidayers (particularly UK stag parties) would have ruined the city. This was a silly worry, as Prague remains one of the most attractive and entertaining European cities. My memories of the specifics of the trip are a little dim, and I don't have enough time to write it all up in detail! But I will try to give a brief summary and put up some nice pictures anyway. We went to Prague during November, which allowed us to freeze for most of the ... read more

Good afternoon my wonderful friends and family! I can honestly say I miss each and everyone of you very much. It is incredibly humbling being in this dark and mysterious city all by myself. I arrived to my apartment in Prague last night after 8 wonderful days in Western Europe. Unfortuantly, I still can't supply pictures because these internet cafes won't let me. I will start school on Monday and have pictures coming then. They are pretty darn good. Anyway, in a nutshell (and a small one at that) my trip to Europe went something like this: I arrived in Paris and went straight to a quaint little hostel on the south side of the city. I was in a room with 4 other beds, all of which belonged to various travellers that were out roaming ... read more

AAfter the lost day that was yesterday, I joined by two girls I have met at the hostel tried to make the most of the day. We started the morning after a nice warm breakfast at the Bohemian Bagel which although passable will not satisfy anyone who has ever had a Finagle Bagel but where the coffee was much more satisfactory. Then on it went on foot to the Prague Castle (Hrad) which is quite a distance away. We enjoyed our walk, but to tell the truth it is getting a bit old because to get anywhere we always take the same route since there is no avoiding it and... it gets old. Plus everytime we have to pass by all those glass shops I just want to buy everything in them, not good. We did ... read more

I went because it is such an important part of Prague history, this place where more than a 100,000 jews lived before the war with its old cemetary and synagogues. And then there is teh fact that except for the small percentage which were able to escape 80,000 died. The whole jewish population of Prague was wiped out and the only reason the buildings of the ghetto were not torn down is because Hitler planned to put up a museum! of an 'extinguished race' there. I looked, I cried - the senselessness of it. Especially moving was an exhibition of children's drawings from a concentration camp Terezin which were produced under the tutolage of an art teacher as the adults tried hard to give these children a way to process what was happening to them and ... read more

28th October We parted with Krzystof at Katowice train station in Poland. It was a wonderful start to the Central and East European leg of our journey. Krzystof had done a wonderful job in showing off his country with all its bittersweet history and we hope one day to return and revisit as well as see the parts we missed. Thank you Krzystof! The train journey to Prague went smoothly but slowly. We enjoyed the old fashioned compartment style coach - Virgin could learn something we feel! Arriving in Prague Main Station we were delighted to see Jenna´s friendly face. We took a taxi across the city to a chorus of "oohs" and "aahs" as we took in the beautiful sights of Prague by night. After settling ourselves at the apartment we found a good restaurant ... read more
