They are laying new carpet in our building!!! Nancy is very allergic to new carpets and to the glue used to hold it fast!!! I, Bill, cannot smell the glue when we are in our room, but Nancy can and that is bad news. If there is an odor, does not matter if it is perfume, carpet glue, or fabric softener, Nancy is allergic to it. Years ago the BOE where Nancy worked laid new carpet. It made her quite ill and under doctor's orders she did not enter the building for four months. We do not think this will be that bad as the carpet used here does not seem nearly as offensive as those at home. However the glue is the same one since it smells exactly the same. The labels on the cans ... read more

It is fascinating talking to people about what it used to be like when the country was communist and it is interesting to see how it still affects the city now. Like there is at least a small potravany (grocery store, that sells cheese, meat, bread and other things but is pretty small) on every block. Also there is at least one bar on every block. There are two big stores that sell everything. They are worse than target and costco (they are always so crowded) One fo them exciting were a building for the communist used to be. I have met some awesome people on this trip and it is always fun meeting other people from the states in Prague who are not on this program. If someone is speaking English that is enough to ... read more

The Czech language has been quite challenging. At first I thought I was doing pretty well but now I realize I really don’t know the language at all. And barley any people here speak English (since it was communist for so long they never taught English in schools). Today I went on an adventure to try and find a place to fix my computer, which was very unsuccessful. I tried to use my Czech and was very unsuccessful in that too. By the metro stop I got off there was market were many Czech's go (better and cheaper than the tourist markets in old town). So after my unsuccessful search for a place to fix my computer I stopped at the market and bought some oranges and bananas with the little bit of money I had. ... read more

The last three weeks a group of us have gathered together each Monday eveing to discuss a book. Before each session we are to have read the selection for that week. The discussion is a very informal one. Someone makes a comment on the reading or asks a question and away we go. We are working our way through Henri Nouwen's The Way of the Heart: Connecting with God Through Prayer, Wisdom, and Silence. It seems a bit condictory that we sit in a group and discuss the value of solitude and silence. Silence and solitude are not well practiced in our Western culture. Most of us are uncomfortable with both. Try ten minutes of silence in a worship service and see how uncomfortable people become. Nancy said, "Ten minutes, try five and watch people frown." ... read more

Today we had a new experience, going to and helping in a Salvation Army Soup Kitchen. Our friend, Dejan, has helped there a number of times this year and has encouraged others to go with him. The Salvation Army is located in a part of the city which is hard for me to characterize. I could do so by saying what it did not appear to be. It didn’t seem to be a residential area and it was definitely not a heavy industrial area. I find it hard to describe. It did not appear to be a warehouse area, nor a commercial area. Perhaps it is a light industrial area. Anyway, it is in an area where services are provided to many homeless people. In addition to the soup kitchen the Salvation Army runs a hostel ... read more

In our entry of January 25th we talked about moving all the books to relieve areas that have become crammed and to make room for new books. Well, phase one of that project was completed today. We still will have a lot of books to move when the eleven sections of new shelving arrive and are installed. So, a little rest for the weary ... It is a shame that we cannot take in information by osmosis, that is it is a shame that when we pick up a batch of books that we are moving that the information in them is not automatically transferred to our brain. Wouldn't that be great? On the other hand if Sherlock Holmes was right and our mind is like a blackboard and will only hold so much chalk writing ... read more

The night life here is great except that in most the clubs the Czechs go to there is Techno music and they all dance in a line facing the stage, it is rather funny. And they have a screen they are watching which has weird images coming on it. One of these clubs that I went to was called the Roxy. The Roxy was the first club we went to and it was a great experience but I don’t think I will be going back. The techno was pounding in my head still hours later. We have managed to find clubs with hip hop thought. But one of them was full of tourists (lots of loud British people). And the other was by college dorms out in the middle nowhere and the name of the club ... read more

Many years ago I glanced through a small book entitled, “Doorways of Washington.” Each page contained a photograph and a description of a doorway in Washington, D.C. There is no question in my mind that a book “The Doorways of Prague,” is also a possibility. The buildings and doorways in downtown Prague are simply fascinating to me. Fortunately for Prague and the world there was almost no damage to Prague during World War II and then during the communist era there was not enough money to tear down the beautiful old buildings and replace them with modern glass and steel buildings. One of my goals during this visit is to take pictures of some of the buildings and doorways that I find interesting. I hope you, the reader, will not become too bored with my pictures, ... read more

Today, February 5, 2006 is Bill’s 66th birthday. This is the second birthday in a row that he has celebrated in the Czech Republic. Last year we had a wild experience when we rode the bus downtown and got the two (2) birthday cakes we had ordered for the morning coffee time on campus. We had picked the cakes from a picture and had NO idea they would be absolutely enormous. It was all I could do to pick up one of them and then we had to carry them across the streets to the bus stop and then get on the bus with them. Since they were so large, we had to turn them partly on the side in order to get them on the bus. It was a really hilarious trip back with these ... read more
