Tim and I went for an early morning walk so that we could have a quieter, uninterrupted view of the river and its bridges. It was a bit damp and very misty but there were no crowds; just the early morning smell of pastries and various sausages fills the air as food vendors start their day. Sketch artists, souvenir sellers and performers claim prime positions as early morning joggers test their bodies on the Charles Bridge and the New Town hills. A few fisherman and a flock of seagulls provide the only action on the water as the river boats were yet to start their day. We had a coffee in the Old Town before heading back to stir up the others and have some breakfast. After breakfast we all walked to the district across the ... read more

We were up and ready by 9am to head off into the world of dentistry. We chose the American Dental Clinic as it was only about 10 minutes away and showed promise. All the dentists were Czech but language was not an issue. The building it was housed in did not list it as an occupant and, after talking to the receptionist at the main counter, we learnt that this was for a good reason. They had relocated some time ago to the other side of town about 30 minutes by car. I figured that if this was wrong on their website then maybe the times are too. It was back to the Emergency Clinic and objections to this plan had to be sent in triplicate 24 hrs earlier; in other words, let's go! The Clinic ... read more

Today we rose at 3.40 , had breakfast and walked to the underground Met train. Three stops later and we arrived at Budapest Central Station to catch our ride to Prague. It was a day ticket in 1st class and there were few passengers so we could spread out and relax. This trip left at 5.25am and pulled into Prague at 12.30 so there was still a little daylight left. Sue had developed a pain in a tooth that had been checked just before we left Australia ( don't you love dentists) so the first priority was to have it seen too. Tim had other things to attend too, so I looked up a few dentists and went to see the guy at reception. He suggested we go to the Prague Emergency Dentist about 15 minutes ... read more

By luck we chose the right time for a rest day in the beautiful castle town of Cesky Krumlov. We stayed in a B&B in a 500 year old house built into the rock with a magnificent room overlooking the Vltava River, which winds around the old town there, way upstream of Prague. It poured rain for much of the day, but we did not have to ride the bikes, and everything in town is within very easy walking distance. We enjoyed the castle, touring only the Baroque theater, which is only one of two in Europe that still has the old mechanical mechanisms for changing sets and creating sound effects, very interesting. We also enjoyed the ambiance of the old town and the tour of the Josef Seidel house and studio, which provided an interesting ... read more

The castle is the official residence and office of the president of the Czech Republic and we saw his guard protecting the palace. Similar to the guards on San Marino they stood rock solid still even when people stood at the side of them taking silly photographs of themselves saluting. Not a grin crossed their face. They looked grey. From the palour of their skin to the moleskin grey of their uniforms. All that seemed missing was a large Russian style ceremonial hat and they would have looked the part . We walked through the gates into the castle courtyard around which was built the Baroque palace which housed the parliament and residency and the payment desks. We parted with 700 crowns which gave us access to the castle, the church, Golden Lane and the museum ... read more

We started off our day with a stop in a the café across the street and had coffee and cake for breakfast, and then made our way to the river. It was a pretty hot day already, so we meandered across the Karlův most(Charles Bridge), which turns out to be a nice pedestrian-only bridge with great view of the river and the castle. We dodged gawking tourists, buskers, and hawkers, stopping occasionally to get a selfie or a photo of the castle, and got to the other side, and it turned out there was both a Starbucks and a tram ticket machine, so we stopped for iced lattes (did I mention it was a hot day?) and bought some tram tickets. After a while, we decided to head on up to the castle (Pražský hrad) so ... read more

Today we slept in a little bit, missed the pension's breakfast hours, and so we took our time getting ready, and went in search of breakfast or lunch or something. We stopped in at one of the touristy restaurants (I think it was the one at U Prince), and got lunch, which turned out later on not to be what we wanted; the day was very hot, and instead of fueling up for the day, we should have done something light, and then something light later on. Lesson learned. We wandered around Prague's old town just looking at stuff. We stopped at the Týn Church, hoping for a peek inside, but it was closed to visitors, so we stopped and took a look at the concert flyers to see if there was anything of interested (I ... read more

Today, we leave Dresden and travel to Prague. Dieter told us "no alarms", so we set our alarms for an hour later than usual, and got enough later that we're pretty sure we satisfied him. We had the usual breakfast, and then went on a driving tour of various other things he wanted to show us, the most important being the "milk shop". We drove around, and he told us all kinds of stuff, most of which I don't remember because I mostly wasn't all that awake (Cheryl may have more details on what we saw from the car). But we eventually ended up in the Äußere Neustadt of Dresden, and we stopped and parked so that we could step into Pfunds Molkerei, or the "milk shop". Sadly, they did not allow photos, so I didn't ... read more
