Prague... Prague is a city that sort of seems as if it came from nowhere- all of a sudden everyone started talking about Prague and everyone was going there. It is somewhere I have wanted t visit for years... since I was 15 to be precise, so that is a long old 18 years to wait! We married 6 months ago and wanted somewhere we could pop to for a short weekend break to celebrate a whole half a year of not killing each other, and Prague suited in terms of flights and being able to fit it all in. Over the years I had began to feel a little apprehensive about visiting Prague due to its popularity and a stag and hen party destination, and I had also heard it was a little sleazy and ... read more

Can we believe I've already been in the UK for 6 months!? Because I sure can't! It's gone extremely quick, which both saddens yet excites me. There's still so much left to do on this side of the world, so much to see that I fear I'll run out of time because of how quick it's going. And on the other hand, I've been lucky to do and experience so much in such a short amount of time. Which brings me to Prague - another bucket list city ticked off the list. One city I was a little sad wasn't included on my Contiki tour and one I've heard so many say good things of. So when the opportunity for cheap flights came up (thank you Ryanair!), I jumped at the chance to go for my ... read more

We drove our car 3,300 km from Minsk, Belarus where we are teaching to see the cities, Christmas markets and quiet snow covered countryside of Belarus, Poland, Czech Republic and eastern Germany. The majority of our 3 week tour was spent in friendly Czech Republic. We have long anticipated our eventual trip to Prague and the Czech Republic. It did not disappoint. We found beautiful Christmas markets, delicious beer, comforting food, and interesting architecture. It was cold, but we made the best of it. We recorded many 10,000 plus step days on our Fitbits. We had a fun Christmas Eve dinner near our hotel (Hostal) at the French restaurant Chez Marcel. The waiters were a lot of fun. We took an Urban Adventure tour of Prague and had a cooking class with Tereza and Pavel with ... read more

The second day in Prague started off with an early walking tour of all the major sights in and around old town, and across the Vltava river at the Prague Castle. Unfortunately, I wasn't feeling well, so I decided not to go with them (3 1/2 hours of walking just sounded too much for me), but Steve still went, so he got lots of nice pictures. I have to tell you that it was really difficult to pick out just a few pictures for this blog from the over 200 that he took. Unfortunately, it was overcast, so they aren't the best pictures ever taken, but hey, we are only here for a few days, so we have to take what we get. I will try to fill in the names of the buildings on any ... read more

Day 213 Thursday 18th August 2016 – Dresden to Prague Woke up kicking ourselves for not planning more days in Dresden as there was so much more we wanted to see and we both actually need to shop for more clothes. After this many days on the road most of what we are carrying is turning into rags and I think people are starting to mistake us for tramps. We sprang (fell) out of bed at 7.30 and walked a block away to a supermarket that had a small café inside and picked up a bread roll and a take away coffee for breakfast. Got a taxi ride to the bus station without any hassles and waited for our bus. The Dresden bus station isn’t a bus station as such but just a series ... read more

Today after breakfast in the hotel, we met our local tour guide, Renata, promptly at 8:30 to begin our morning tour of the City of Prague. First stop was at the Prague Castle, which is said to be the largest ancient castle in the world. It dates from the 9th century and is the official residence of the President of the Czech Republic. St. Vitus Cathedral is one of the buildings of this complex which dominates the skyline. The inside of the cathedral was beautiful. This was more of an orientation tour giving us information should we want to go into the castle at a later time and a more in depth visit to the cathedral. We boarded the bus again and marveled at the long, long lines waiting to get in. Renata said they instituted ... read more

Yesterday we had a leisurely day getting ready for our long-awaited Danube River Cruise. We didn't have to be at the airport until 5:00 p.m. so we even had a chance to watch a Netflix movie. Of course we would try to fit one more movie in. We arrived at the airport with plenty of time to spare, had something to eat before boarding our flight to Amsterdam where we then transferred to our flight to Prague. All in all I didn't think the flight seemed overly long--I was even able to sleep a few hours. We arrived in Prague about 1:30 p.m. and met our Gate 1 City Tour Guide where she promptly loaded us into a van that took us to the Hotel Imperial where we met the tour director for Gate 1, Soma ... read more

Today, refreshed from a good night's sleep, we explored Old Town with our guide Sean. Not a czech name you say. You're right, he is an American who has been living in Prague for the last 2 years to finish his masters degree in Central Europeen Studies. As with all tours they take you to the major sights and tell you the history. I never remember the historical facts but I do remember the stories and legends, and Sean told us quite a few. One of the must see attraction is the Astronomical Clock. The clock is a 600-year-old marvel of medieval engineering. The clock is mounted on the southern wall of Old Town Hall in the Old Town Square. The clock mechanism itself is composed of three main components: the astronomical dial, representing the position ... read more

WOW, another great night sleep. I just love these hard beds at the Hilton. Kirsten is still asleep and I’m tiptoeing around and taking a shower and getting dressed. Being my normal stealthy self, I hear Kirsten yell from under her pillow “it’s not working I hear you”. I shrug and continue. Kirsten meets me for breakfast, I’m sitting in the corner picking out all the folks I think will be on the cruise and giving them names. Kirsten asks… So have you picked them all out? Na, I’m just catching up on all the news I missed. Anything interesting? Na After breakfast, we make our way over to the Viking meeting area. Claudia our cruise director is there and welcomes us. She immediately picks out Kirsten and makes all over her. She acknowledges me as ... read more

What City? As the Prague escalator descended, I felt a rush of excitement. I was in Prague! I had no idea where the escalator led. I knew one thing—I was headed to Old Town Square. Abroad students dream about it; it’s all over social media. I’d seen many pictures: a giant square with much to see and do and I was dying to check it out. The escalator ride took forever. Stepping off, I recognized my friend Danielle, whom I had met while traveling around Northern Europe. “Hey, what are you doing here”, I said. Danielle was hesitant to reply. “I’m here to explore all that Prague has to offer,” she finally said. She evoked distraught. The temperature dropped. Danielle exhaled a cloud of vapor. The smoke resembled a bubble. It circled and rose in the ... read more
