Alrighty all, I know I promised more rose photos for today since the weather the other day stopped me from taking more.. I spent about an hour in the gardens yesterday, so hopefully a few of these came out alright and in focus! =) Planning to get some nice shots of the actual museum/gallery/grounds soon. Random sky photos taken during sunset bike ride. Its kinda nice--sunset here has to be around 9:30 at night or so.. much more daylight than at home!! Only problem with that is you need good shades when trying to go to sleep early..haha. FYI, the memorial ceremony is going to be this Saturday morning. Tuesday (the actual memorial day) was packed with visitors to the museum and gallery, volunteer groups, and even news crews. I got to see them film a ... read more

So I promised I'd post photos of the crazy huge rose gardens we have here.. I just went out and took a handful of photos, however was unfortuantely interrupted by a nice violent thunderstorm! Thus, there is not too too many at the moment, but I'll take more when the skies clear. This week is when its all in peak bloom I guess so It looks mighty nice. the photos don't even do justice to the size of this thing.. 29 thousand bushes, 213 varieties from 32 countries. HUGE! The gardens are set up in a basic format like three roses (if you look at it from an aerial view thats what you'll see..sortof). The center rose in the biggest--its dark red flowers and meant to represent the 192 men of Lidice that were murdered. The ... read more

So I don't have any really fun pictures today, however thought I'd do an update regardless =) Unfortunately my (new..grrr) camera had some weird error with my memory card, so I just got it reformatted, and now everything is peachy. To test to make sure it works again (which it does) I stuck my head out the window and took a few pics of the sunset from my view! Tomorrow I plan on going to the Rose Garden to get some awesome pics of the 29 THOUSAND rose bushes currently in bloom. Lets just say it smells ah-maz-ingg in that half of town.. Today I went to Prague and visited the Museum of Communism. Twas pretty good, very informative. I was interested in going just to see the take they had on it.. You find some ... read more

First of all, the birthday was good. Thanks to all of you who called/emailed/shipped packages/flowers etc!! Just a few notes on the day..my boss (without knowing of the b-day at the time) took me out of work around noon and decided I was to run errands with him all day. Good part being that I got to see a nice portion of the country (Slany, Kralupy, etc) annoying part being that it was my birthday and I wanted to get my packages they told me were waiting!! haha When he did find out though, I got a nice birthday dinner, so I guess that worked lol. Nonetheless, everything else was picked up this morning. Thanks to my mom/dad/sisters/noni, my entire workplace thinks that I have some very well to do boyfriend in Prague (sidenote: I WISH!). ... read more

Went around taking some photos today as its my day off..sorta. I intended to do my heap of laundry today, however just realized that apparently nobody here thinks weekends are good times to do laundry, thus the laundromat is not open on weekends. Horrible planning in my opinion, but they think we're the crazy Americans who are busy/do things "non-stop". I think I kinda like it that way though.. lol Whatever. So, Pretty photos!! (wish I had used higher resolution because some would make great computer backgrounds lol) The exhibit isnt technically in the museum, but across from the museum there is another smaller gallery for traveling/temporary exhibits that we use. behind the room shown there is another room for visiting classes and whatnot to use.. Its a pretty space..and now it smells awesome cause of ... read more

Lots of driving with a stop at a hyper market—think of the Auckland malls then double it, Ken made me rush though, so only got groceries. (I did offer to sit in the van and read while Alison shopped) Then we went to the Sedlec Ossuary—a chapel and a cemetery have been there for many 100s of years, and many were buried there. Then there was the plague and the 30 year war and many more were buried. Then the bishop went and scattered some earth from the holy land on the cemetery and this made it super popular for interment. Problem was that the marketing exceeded the resources, and they ran out of space and had to store bones in the bottom of the chapel. About 200 yrs ago a family bought the land, and ... read more

Karlstejn castle—they say this castle looks like it is from Disneyland, and it does. Turrets and walls and ramparts, high above a village. We had to walk up to the castle first thing in the morning and it was very interesting a beautiful. Bought a picture from an art gallery and proprietor clicked his heels and bowed at us—the Czech manners make you feel very ladylike. We then rushed back to Prague, and did some more sightseeing and finally went to the concert in the golden church. We went to see the Hussite chapel—they were very early Protestants even before Luther and helped to mould the Czech Republic into one people. Caused lots of bloodshed though—the protestants seemed very keen on chucking people out of high windows—there is a name for this—defenestration - and it has ... read more

13 days to go, but I wanted to get this set up in the meantime to send the link out to ya'll. My plan is to keep everyone remotely informed of my happenings while across the seas for the next few months. I can't believe I'm leaving soon! woohoo! Hope to get a chance to say hellos and goodbyes to all before I leave, but if not, I will miss you bunches and can't wait to see you later this summer! Assumingly most of my entries will be photos with explanations, because that is the most fun for me, however I'll hopefully give you all something fun to read as well. Happy readings! 3 Sarah... read more

‘The Long Road To The Church of Bones’ Intro Rather than prattle on about the glories of Prague and the Czech Republic which many a travel blog will enthuse over, I thought I’d talk about a few different things for a change. Don’t get me wrong, Prague is a beautiful city with the Gothic excellence of St. Vitus’s cathedral, the castle, the Astronomical Clock, Charles Bridge and the view from Petřín Hill among many places to see before you die. But if you where to go to a Prague for a week you’d wear out the common attractions pretty soon. So now I’ll recommend a place (and help you get there via public transport) that you may not have heard of but should surely visit if you are going to Prague for anything longer than ... read more

We went to see a castle today that the lonely planet said was a bit too Disney. Because of that it was low on my list of places to visit but I'm glad we went because we had a great day. The castle and the town was nicer than I expected and it wasn't crowded at all. It obviously gets very crowded at times, judging by all the (often closed) touristy restaurants and souvenir shops but we managed to find a really cosy cheap restaurant that had great food.... read more
