The official English translation for this coastal road the Croatians call Jadranska Magistrala (officially called State Road D8) is misleading. It is not a highway at all, but a scenic, winding road along the Croatian Adriatic coast. If you are in a hurry, take the freeway. It is toll road, which was built further inland, courtesy of the EU and other private investors. If you have time, we do recommend to slow down and explore the coast, stopping in picturesque fishing villages for delicious fish and seafood, at scenic bays for a swim and historically significant places for your personal cultural enrichment. The D8 is the Croatian section of the Adriatic Highway, running from the Slovenian border through Istria via Rijeka, Senj, Zadar, Sibenik, Split, Opuzen and Dubrovnik to the border with Montenegro. We arrived in Vodice and were ready to set up our Dalmatian Base Camp here. Courtesy of our friends Ana and Tomislav, who are from here and who's families lives here, we had not just a place to stay, but a home! The hospitality we received was exceptional and Nui and I have the Condics and Rocas much to thank for. More about our Vodice stay and the visits of its surroundings will be featured in the very last Croatian Short Story. Hence bare with us and keep following......... read more

Totalne nevyspaty robim check out, obsluha mi vracia depozit za kartu a sup ho na blizke metro. Takto skoro rano v nedelu vonku len bezdaci a upratovacie caty. Aby som sa dostal na bus stanicu erdberg, treba mi zmenit farbu prazdneho metra. To bez problemov. Opustam metro a vdaka dobremu znaceniu sa nadchodom a popri parkovaciemu domu dostavam pred bus stanicu, ta je vsak este zatvorena. No prednou su neake tie zastavky flixbusu a cakajuci ludia, smer ba a ine destinacie co maju skory odchod z viedne. Ja sa vidavam k blizkej bille ale je nedela a kurvy rakuske maju zavrete, bo predavacky potrebuju byt v nedelu doma, hlavne, ze ludia vo fabrikach v nedelu makaju osto sest. Obdalec prebieha vystavba vyskovych budov, co vyuzivam a znackujem si svoje teritorium. Bus stanicu otvaraju na minutu presne ... read more

Europe » Croatia » Istria » Krk August 20th 2020

Krk is the name of an island in the Kvarner Bay (Northern part of the Croatian Adriatic, off the coast of the large city of Rijeka). Krk is the largest island in the Adriatic, covering 406 square km. It is also one of the most populous with 17,000 permanent inhabitants (excluding the tourism population). It is well developed and can get very busy with tourists in July and August, as it is connected by a bridge to the mainland. Rijeka's Airport is also located on the island. The main resorts on the island are Malinska, Omisalj, Vrbnik, Punat and Krk Town, as well as Baska, popular because of its natural sandy beach, a rarity on the Croatian Adriatic. Nenad used to spend time here with his parents in the 1960's (omg), and has not been ever ... read more

Nenad grew up in communist Yugoslavia and had his fair share of indoctrination especially about the shining, infallible leader of the Communist Party, the Military and the Nation, Marshal Josip Bros, nicknamed Tito. "Ti to" means "you this", making reference to his rather authoritarian style of commanding people. These Brijuni Islands with its largest island named Veliki Brijun Island are situated only 2 km off the coast of Fazana. Tito made the Brijuni Islands his personal State Summer Residence. He followed with this notion the tradition of Habsburg Royalty and nobles, who used Brioni (Italian name) as their fancy get together place. A very egalitarian, socialistic act indeed. Being so close to them, Nenad was curious to visit these previously for ordinary Yugoslav citizens off limit islands. Slovenian architect Jože Plečnik designed a pavilion for Tito. ... read more

Istria is the largest peninsula in the Adriatic Sea. It is the most northern part of the Adriatic, its territory shared by Croatia (far majority), Slovenia, and Italy. Records show settlements in this area going back to Roman even Greek times. Most of the Middle Ages (from 1267 to 1797) it was possessed by the Venetian city state (Venetian Republic) and later became part of the Habsburg Monarchy until its disintegration in 1918, when it formally became Italian territory. After the defeat of Mussolini's fascists by the Yugoslav partisans in 1945, it was incorporated partially into the Slovene and to the greater extent into the Croatian Republic of the newly founded Socialist Communist Republic of Yugoslavia. No wonder the architecture, customs, food and art are strongly influenced by the Venetian period. Whilst Croatian and to a ... read more

After spending our last marks on breakfast, some drinks and scarves we hopped in the car and departed Mostar. A little over an hour into the drive we reached the border between Bosnia and Herzegovina and the final country we’d visit during this trip, Croatia. We had expected the border to be a little busy given there are quite a lot of day trips from Mostar to Split and vice versa, but we were pleasantly surprised when we discovered there was hardly a queue. From the border crossing we opted to take the slightly longer route via the coast. The first part of our drive in Croatia was through lovely mountainous scenery; the autumn leaves were stunning. The scenery changed dramatically after we drove through an almost 3km long tunnel through the mountain and out to ... read more
