Well, sunday confirmed it - sick. I guess it was inevitable. You can't keep up this kind of pace and share rooms with that many dirty backpackers without something eventually catching up to you. On my train to Zagreb I started feeling a swelling in my throat and then got off into the unsavory Croatian humidity and spent the next two hours searching for my hostel. (I think Croatia officially wins the award for worst direction givers, as I had a similarily hard time finding my place in Split). Got to the hostel and...closed. Shit! Backtracked to an HI Hostel and went straight to bed. It was about two in the morning at that point. Woke up in the morning and felt like death. I was skeduled to go to the Plitvice Lakes the next day, ... read more

Greetings from Dubrovnik! I hope all the week 1 kids made it home safe and sound, and that you’re all enjoying the beginning of hell week – I know how much you were all looking forward to it. Day 7: The travel day actually went blissfully without incident (at least on our end – I haven’t heard anything from the other group but can only assume that’s a good thing). We all woke up at an early but reasonable time (7:00), got some breakfast, and hit the road. We were in the airport by 9:15, which gave us an hour to kill before the first group had to go through security and the second group was to get picked up. The kids killed time in the expected ways: playing cell phone games, exchanging money, and thumbing ... read more

When I last checked in, we were halfway through our time in Montenegro; as it’s now the night before we leave, and I imagine most of you have heard next to nothing from the kids, another blog post is probably overdue. Day 4: As many of you read, much of the first three days of the trip were spent in training. While that shouldn’t be surprising (it is a training trip, after all), since we at Agoura want your kids to be well-rounded and cultured as well as dynamite water polo players, Kevin and I gave the kids Friday afternoon off and we all went on a “boat excursion” (Milos’s words) that he and Dusty arranged for us. We justified this by giving the kids a killer of a morning dry-land workout (even going so far ... read more

“Oh no, they’re French, they’ll smoke, and that means after a beer, or seven, so will I.” That was my response to Michelle informing me that we (she) had agreed to have a communally cooked dinner that evening with a French woman (Marie) and her partner Simon. She had just met Marie outside the unisex shower block at the bottom of the rustic camp site we had pitched at on the island of Mljet. Little did we know that this chance meeting would be the start of a brilliant three days spent as a group of four on the stunning and remote Dalmatian Island. That morning Ante, from our guesthouse in Dubrovnik, had kindly dropped us at the ferry port via a camping shop to get Butane for our stove. After queuing for an hour with ... read more

Armed with our map of Korcula bay, carefully drawn and explained by the artist know as Simon, we boarded the morning Catamaran among the customary hordes, bound for our next Island destination. An hour later we approached a beautiful walled city from the Sea, it resembled a perfect miniature of its bigger brother on the mainland, Dubrovnik. Disembarking we fought our way politely through the room touts, which reminded me of “Slow Boats to China” – where Gavin Young is constantly assailed by mature women at every port soliciting their spare bedroom to supplement their small widow’s income. Not feeling inclined to accept the invitations of these more modern incarnations of Young’s port hosts, we headed off, fully loaded, to follow Simons map the supposed twenty minutes to the campsite on the other side of the ... read more

It's been a few days since I updated...we've been quite busy since we got on the ship on Tuesday. 3 stops so far Dubrovnik in Croatia and 2 stops in Greece. Argostoli and Corfu. Dubrovnik was absolutely stunning. It's a city that is built around the old fortress from early days. The walls of the fortress are spectacular. Nearly 80 feet high and 20 feet thick. It took hundreds of years to build and was used in the early days to fend off attackers. Today it is the primary tourist attraction in Dubrovnik, although many people still live inside. Most of the city is built on a hillside and there are literally thousands of stairs that need to be climbed in order to get anywhere. Everyone we saw was in pretty good shape in that town ... read more

I am stood at the top of the hill, underneath the great cross overlooking the city, re-built last year after it was destroyed in this regions gruesome war. From where we are we have a panoramic view of the famous medieval walled city below. Thankfully we did not have to walk all the way up here in the blazing August sun, or take an extortionate, tourist fleecing cable car either. As a surprise, our guesthouse host, Ante, drove us up here in his car, giving us a brief history of his homeland in the process. As a host, he was proving pretty perfect. After waking at 1.30am to ensure a prompt landing in Croatia’s most southerly city we arrived on the verge of delirium with tiredness. Ante, our accommodation owner, met us at the bus station ... read more

This is where our life on Middle-Eastern coach lines begins, and will never be forgotten as one of the most hilarious but hated experiences of our young lives. Our Split bound boat from Hvar arrived around 1pm where we scrambled to the bus station to make the 130pm to Dubrovnik, and what we thought was our next paradise. 5 winding hours staring over the face of a cliff later we arrived in Dubrovnik and went on a hunt for our residence. After climbing a mountain and gaining an early hate for Dubrovnik we were greated to a miscommunication that left us with a 2 hour hold on our reservation. Angry, Hungry, and unclean, we strolled through the ghost town as it was sunday, and apparently Croatia doesnt exist on sundays. Luckily we came across a tourist ... read more

This morning we broke the trend of getting up an going for a swim - we left the boat at 8.30 and went for a hike up to an old fortress. It took us about 45 mins to get up there, and it had an amazing view at the top so we got our snap on as per usual and took lots of pics. We struggled a bit after having done not much exercise for awhile and realised just how unfit we are!! Too much lying in the sun and holidaying! On the way down we got slightly lost and ended up on residential property and it took us twice as long as it had on the way up. I had thought our sense of direction was getting better but apparently not! After we got back ... read more

Celebrating Kyle's birthday at midnight on what felt like a bc ferry with a piece of chocolate cake and a few homemade gin and juices we arrived in Split, Croatia at 7:30 the following morning. Luckily for us the tranfer between ferries took about 20 minutes and we set sail towards Hvar Island not before enjoying our first real breakfast containing eggs since Bordeaux. After 14 consecutive hours on a ferry we arrived at the northern end of the island and caught an oven with wheels into town. Being unprepared like usual, we were fortunate enough to be in Croatia where the average homeowner begs for tenants the second you step foot on their turf. Within seconds we found our cheapest, nicest, and most private accomadations thus far on our trip, all before noon. Stoked for ... read more
