Its not the hills that are alive with the sound of music, its the streets of Vienna. If you ask the Viennese about their city, they will undoubtedly mention, "QUALITY of life". Vienna, Austria is said to have one of the highest qualities of life of any city in the world. From environmental consciousness to cultural opportunities and workplace logistics, the residents of Vienna seem to have it made. As a city known for music, is has produced an incredible amount of talent. Famous musical talent that has sprung from Vienna include Josef Haydn, Wolfgang Mozart, Franz Schubert, Johannes Brahms, and even Beethoven for a time, despite his near-deafness. The father of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud lived here until the Nazi occupation in 1938. Today, Vienna still boasts of its musical talent, among other things. I saw ... read more

This trip has been awesome!! We've been in vienna for three days and had a really good time. Most of the time has been spent touring the shops and cafes. The hot chocolate is amazing stuff, it's like drinking melted chocolate, all thick and sweet and chocolatey.... Mad Andy drank so much he was sick! George thought this was great fun and spent the nest two days taking the mickey out of Andy. That's when I found out just how dangerous event florists can be. Andy grabbed hold of a bunch of lilies in the restaurant and...well I'll spare you the detail but George is walking funny now and those lilies wont be doing any photosynthesis in the very near future! Last night I went to the concert with Tony, we saw The Salonorchester Alt ... read more

My Year in Asia had always seemed to stretch endlessly out before me, all the way to the distant curve of the horizon and into the vagueness beyond. So it was with a sense of real disbelief - as well as sadness - that I realised I only had three weeks left after returning from Burma! And these three, already inadequate, weeks passed by ridiculously quickly - a loud, fast-forward blur of parties & dinners, cramming for final exams, nights out on the town with good mates, and all the inevitably bittersweet 'Lasts' that come with leaving a place... The Last som tam from the chatty ladies opposite the IC, the Last lazy afternoon at the Rangsit public pool, the Last truly-unbelievably delicious bag of grilled pork from the street-vendor I'd visited almost every day, the ... read more

There are some airports in the world where sleeping overnight is part and parcel of your holiday experience. Stansted, Luton and even Gatwick airports in England are good examples. (seeing a trend here...) Like sleeping on the top deck of a Greek island hopping ferry; you arrive early, bag a place to set up home and then wander (though not far; what with the strict baggage destruction rules set in place) nodding every now and then to your fellow travellers - silently laughing at the ones who have chosen to set up home in a place that they'll be sure to get kicked out of before 4am the next morning (past experience), or the hardcore airport sleepers who have brought along air mattresses and keeping in mind places that would suit you well in the future; ... read more

This weekend I went with my school program here in Prague on an excursion ot Vienna, what a beautiful city!! The streets and buildings are much cleaner than in Prague and the architecture is similar to that of Switzerland. I mostly spent the entire trip walking and eating which is really what I love to do anyway. We got in Friday night and skipped out on the mini tour to hang out with a friend of Cooper who is studying in Vienna this semester. He took us to a little restuarant called Weiner Wald so we could get Weiner Schnitzle (I got the chicken, not veal, schnitzle and it was really good). After that we had to stop off at the Sacher Hotel bar and dessertery to get Sacher Torte, a very rich chocolate cake, also ... read more

Sunday morning we took an 8am train from Prague that got into Vienna around 12:30pm. Our hostel was a short tram ride away from the train station, which was nice because the hostel was in a fairly central area. I was really impressed by the hostel- it only opened last summer so everything was very clean and seemed very secure. They even gave us all maps when we got there that listed important sights to see while we were in Vienna. After we checked in we took the metro to one of the main streets called St. Stephan’s Square. My first impression of Vienna was that it had a much more urban feel than I expected. I was expecting it to be more of a small, old European city like Prague but the downtown area ... read more

I thought I had read in one of the books that Melk, a small village about an hour West of Vienna, houses a monastery and a winery. We had a free day and it was a sunny one so we took advantage of it and hopped on the train to Melk. The ride was beautiful and it allowed us to see the countryside of Austria we had not seen yet. You could see the monastery from the town and it looked like it pretty much dominated the tiny village. The tour was not until 2p so we walked around the outside grounds for a while and tried to find a coffee shop. Everywhere was closed for the winter, even the park adjacent to the monastery. Oh well. We did some mini-hiking and waited for our 2p ... read more

Sigh. I was all ready to come online today and positively gush about the wonderful city of Vienna and Austria in general, particularly how wonderful the people we've met have been, and then an incident occured which considerably soured my mood. After getting up early to pack up and check out of our hostel (we're leaving for Prague today), I headed to the local grocery store, Billa, to buy some breakfast while Derek went to the bookstore. I picked out a yogurt, a coffee/yogurt drink, and a seriously delicious looking apple strudel. I was particularly excited about the strudel because Maria lists it as "one of her favourite things," so I wanted to have some before I left Austria. Well, it was not to be. At the checkout, the woman ran my things through, I paid, ... read more
