Tuesday Dec 12th It was a relatively nice day in Vienna.. still freezing cold..but it looked like the sun was making a genuine attempt at gracing us with her presence..so we decided to take a stroll towards the Schonbrunn Castle. We had heard that there was a garden maze, a zoo, and the old faithful- a Christmas market within the castle... Armed with the GPS we hit the streets of Vienna. The walk was supposed to be an easy 15-20 min walk..after about an hour and 15 mins we saw the grand doors of the castle :) Although the walk took longer than accepted, the GPS did not fail us a bit and it actually was a very nice walk in new neighborhoods. The Schonbrunn Castle looked impressive from the courtyard.. and we made a mental ... read more

I ended up renting a car and driving from Ljubljana to Vienna to meet the Two Gallants and catch their show in Vienna. Tyson and I had talked about me coming with them on their tourbus for a few nights but we never exactly worked out the details. Well like and idiot I got a return rental car to Vienna and found myself deciding to hop on the bus at the last minute to head to Frankfurt. Now of course to change a return rental to a one way car rental was going to cost me 250 euros, so I found the next best thing which was an underground parking garage that in german seemed to say 4 euros per hour. This was going to be totally expensive but certainly cheaper than switching the car rental ... read more

We arrived in Vienna approximetly a week ago.. and what a week has it been!! Both Dave and I got pretty sick... I had clear symptoms of the flu when we left LA..and it got horribly worst in Vienna.. and to make things even more exciting I managed to pass on my good fortune to my better half...things weren't all bad though..we managed to locate all the pharmacy's in our neighborhood.. and learned very quickly that Vienese have a soft spot for homeopathic medicine :) Our trip to Vienna was ok... Swiss air definetly has it's plus'.. but similar to most airlines.. not enough leg room.. specially if you live in a 6 foot body... Dave was not a happy man after about 6 hours in that seat.. and we had another 5 to go..ouch! We ... read more

... we leave - our families - our friends - vienna so it´s not easy. but exciting. very exciting. so I´ve just got travelfever because of nervousness. some things are still left to do and we try to manage everthing, especially meeting people we will not see again till june. that´s reason enough for a party we had at café benno on saturday! It was very funny, we got a lot of tipps (staying alone during the journey for some days, wiping cans before drinking, quick drying panties, ...) and for return we had a tombola, with 75% winning chance!!! prices from our household emerges excitment amougst our guests (candles, crushed nuts, a potpourri, hair pins a.s.o)... so we thank you very much for coming up, saying god bye and buying a ticket for the tombola! ... read more

I've sort of mentioned the Christmas market in the last entry; however, I haven't gone into much detail about what a huge part of Austrian -- as well as German -- culture (especially in Vienna) the Christmas markets are. Well, I'm sure this isn't news to anyone. It's really interesting to watch Vienna gradually turn into a big Winter Wonderland. Starting in the middle of November, the streets have lights put up all over (which I'll sometime take pictures of at night) but these lights are just now being lit (starting Dec. 1st) at night. There are stands set up as it starts getting cold, selling roasted potato slices and roasted chestnuts, which I still haven't tried but will. At the Rathaus (parliament), as I said in the last journal entry, the holiday celebration is started ... read more

Last Thursday was a big day for Americans, and many turkeys, too. Even though Thanksgiving isn't nationally celebrated in Austria, the Central College group sure did. I believe all total we had somewhere around 30 people. The turkey was provided by the directors, but everything else was supplied and cooked by the students. It was a true test of our culinary skills. :-) We had so much food and it was all delicious! The traditional dishes were present (turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes & gravy, pies), but we also had a few non-stereotypical dishes (manicotti, Korean stir-fry). Everything tasted absolutely wonderful, and thank goodness for leftovers! Leftovers are heavenly for a student on a budget. :-) The Central College classroom was transformed into a dining setting, lit by candlelight once the meal started. Yours truly baked two ... read more

I lasted 5 days at the pub in Austria - a new record! It was OK, although the hours sucked (on Friday and Saturday we worked 7pm - 7am, without a break), I just wanted to keep travelling and so my heart wasnt in it. The others were nice enough, but like I said my heart wasnt in it so I didnt really make an effort to make friends. I think I got ripped off with my wages though - but at least I got paid this time (I'm still waiting for my money from the Bath job!!). So Im now in Vienna and am going by night bus to Munich tonight. Then the plan is to go to Prague and then Budapest and fly back to London from there. Its weird being back in Vienna ... read more

Sorry it has been awhile since my last real post. I say "real" because I realized that the last one was unnecessary, and I deleted it. Especially since it attracted a comment from a stranger who wanted to get in an Internet fight. Which isn't what this journal's about. This past week has been SUPER busy. I will leave out all the boring details concerning academics and registering for classes at Augsburg next semester, and just talk about the fun stuff. Brief summary of last weekend: Friday - went to an Italian restaurant w/ friends and then to my friend Eric's house for the evening Saturday - made pumpkin pie (using a PUMPKIN! Not canned stuff) with Dan and Hillary, at Dan's apartment. It was SO good. Then, went to the Christmas tree lighting in front ... read more

Ive worked two nights here in Weiner Neudstadt and its good. The complete opposite of the pub in London. Here are some of the differences: We get to keep our tips We can drink anything (including alcohol - something that was strictly forbidden in London) When the customers buy us drinks we are expected to drink them (so by the end of the night you can be very tipsy, if not drunk) We dont mop the floor 3 times - in fact we dont mop at all Closing takes 15 minutes, not 1hour The barmen get to decided when we close - so it can be anywhere between 2am and 6am You can smoke behind the bar You can talk to the customers - in fact, you have to. But despite all the plus's I dont ... read more
