So i have finally gotten around to a bit of travelling. Amanda, as a teacher, had two weeks off and was off to do a tour and then a few days in Vienna, and asked if i wanted to meet up with her seen as it was the weekend. Jumped at the chance and as a result got to see two cities in 4 days. Managed to get cheap as flights, £85 return to Bratislava (which is the capital of Slovakia) and caught the bus for a 90min journey to Vienna. We got dropped off on some deserted street at 1230am. It was completely dead - no cars, shops or houses. There was no sign of a Taxi stand, as it turns out there was a train station across the road, but couldnt tell what ... read more

We bought the train tickets from Budapest (15e return ticket), the ticket was open, so we could choose any train we wanted. February 15, 2007 - A few weeks ago I went with my friend from Canada, Mike, to Schloss Schönbrunn on the outskirts of Vienna. The history of the plot of land dates back to the middle ages, but the palace that we see today was built in 1700 as a grand hunting lodge for Leapold I. In 1728 Maria Theresa moved into the Palace and expanded it even more. She had it converted from a hunting lodge to a magnificient palace. The Gloriette in the back was built to completely finish the beautiful palace and its gardens. It was completed during the last year of Maria Theresa's life. After that, the palace was home to many different generations of monarchies until the Republic of Austria was formed. Mike and I took the 45 minute guided ... read more

Amazing what a plate of pasta and a good night’s sleep does for one. I woke up on Sunday feeling like a new person. Cold was still lingering, but nothing like the two days before. To make things even better, when I went down for breakfast I saw that the rain had stopped and the sun had come out. What joy! I ambled around to Stephensplatz (the cathedral square), sat outside in a café to drink a cup of coffee and debate what to do with my glorious day. The original plan had been to go visit one of the palaces, but it was just too nice a day to be inside - especially after the rain over the past two days. My guidebooks of choice are Dorling Kindersely because they have great maps and wonderful ... read more

I woke up feeling a bit better, but still full of cold. I went down for breakfast and then, because it was raining again, I decided to have a quiet morning in the hotel lounge, sitting in a comfy chair and doing a Sudoku puzzle. It was still raining at midday, but I was ready to go out and explore. I walked over to the Freyung section of town to the Easter market. Lots of really cool little things to help celebrate the holiday. One booth was Easter eggs made from all different kinds of minerals. There was one that was a rich dark green that I couldn’t resist. It is made from a mineral that is called “goldfluss” in German. I did an internet search when I got home and discovered that it is a ... read more

I have over 250,000 miles with British Airways that I never get to use because they never seem to have any offers available to where I want to go or, more importantly, when I want to go. In BA’s on-going attempts to get me to spend some of these miles, I am constantly getting emails with special offers. Most of them are not worth the time it takes to open the email, but once in a while, they come through. They had a “sale” last month where one could fly to various cities for half the usual miles plus the airport taxes. The only city that would work with my diary was Vienna - so for 7,500 miles and £59 off I went. I actually took a day off from work so that I could spend ... read more

Found an amazing place where they sell sangria by the watering can in Vienna. Oh if only Birt where here... maybe that is his true calling after all? Unfortunately I didn't partake as my friend had to work today but I did get a picture of the poster for those of you who know and love Birt. I feel at this point the term 'Hoooooooooo!' is most appropriate. Awesome. Been doing a bit of sightseeing here, drinking as per usual and pretending to be a student last friday at an erasmus party. Forgot what fun they are once certain sleazy AEGEE members aren't involved. Note: for any AEGEE members out there reading this, I know you aren't all sleazy! Hope nobody takes offence now. But a bit of a Italian spoken and some dancing in a ... read more

Unfortunately our arrival in Vienna has coincided with me getting the flu. Not only am I feeling achy and snotty, there is also a sense of frustration at not being able to make the most of the few days we have in a wonderful city like Vienna. While managing to fight the urge to simply curl up in bed, we have had to limit what we´ve been able to see and do in our three days here, which is abit sad really. Our major accomplishment in our time here has been attending an Opera at the State Opera. Having never been to the opera before, we had no idea how to go about getting tickets, nor what to expect if we even managed to get tickets in the first place. The simple thing to do would ... read more

(June 27 through June 29 2006) June 27 Arriving into Vienna, we validated our tickets before we even headed out to explore the city. We wanted to make sure that there would be no surprises on the day we left for Bratislava. We checked train schedules and left the Westbahnhof satisfied. The heat of the afternoon hit us immediately, and as we looked on the map, we were relieved that the hostel was only but a couple of blocks away. After walking in circles, through residential and commercial districts, we finally saw a sign for the hostel, and felt foolish. Sweating and uncomfortable we headed up to our room and relaxed, took a nap and were a bit ticked about our decision on the hostel. On the train ride from Salzburg we had called several places, ... read more
