Our flight was scheduled to leave O'hare at 2:33pm on the 6th but because of snow, (and some stupidity on United's part) we did not take off untill after 7:30pm. Because we took off over 5 hours late, we missed our connecting flight in Frankfurt, Germany. It was a little bit of a worry but it worked out well and we got on another small plane to Vienna less than an hour later. Once we arrived in Vienna, we were greeted by our "Buddies" who are a couple of local guys assigned to help us transition us to life in Austria. Gabriel and Matthias are awesome and have helped us with so much. Yesterday they helped a couple of us set up a bank account and get a cell phone. After we were finished with some ... read more

I'm in Vienna now, but I thought I'd finish transcribing my earlier entry on Bolgona and Venice from my journal. Derek showed me how to change the crazy Austrian keyboard to normal at our old internet place in Salzburg (hence my last entry involving normal spelling) but I can't change it on this computer, so..... Sorry you have to read through the ys and zs. When we last left off, our heros had just arrived in Venice and had dropped their bags at their hostel.... For the afternoon we did whate we do best--wandered. Eventuall we hit a point wehre we were too tired, cold, and hungrez to go on so decided to go back. of course, actuallz reaching a destination is much easier said than done in Venice, what with the tinz roads which meet ... read more

PROLOGUE Surprise! I am not really writing this entry on Feb 7th. I bet I fooled you all. Instead it is the middle of March, and I realized how truely fast time is going and I really need a way to remember all that has happened since I have been here. This will help comfort me every time I think to myself, where has all my time and money gone? Instead of drawing a blank, I can just log on to the handy-dandy internet and all my problems will be solved! That being said, I will move on from this disclaimer and pretend that I have just arrived in Vienna, wide-eyed and bushy tailed, eager American in a brand new city for the first time. * * * * * * * I am incredibly jet-lagged. ... read more

When Joel said, Mum, we're at the wrong station! I thought he was joking! We were leaving Vienna to start our travels and were standing in Westbahnhof Train Station. Our train for Ljubljana was leaving in half an hour from Sudbahnhof Train Station way on the other side of the city. Running late for departures for the Meadows is becoming a habit, albeit unintentional! We hurried (with our big packs) to the Ubahn (Metro) and caught a train straight away, then we changed to a tram but encountered unusually heavy traffic. We arrived at the Station two minutes before our train was to leave and I was convinced we would not make it! We sprinted for the platform - my heart was pounding - and arrived seconds before the departure time - I could hardly climb ... read more

Day 17 Friday 2nd February 2007 “Bags to coach and departure” early this morning as we made our way through Italy to Austria. Stopped at the bottom of the Dolomites for lunch. These are limestone Italian Alps that spread across Trentino-Alto Adige and into the Veneto. This spectacular Alpine region is a favourite for skiing in winter and bushwalking in the summer. We were soon in Austria, famous for their apple strudel, schnitzel, Mozart, Strauss, Arnold Schwartzeneger and Schnapps. Again time for another history lesson. The founding family was the Habsburgs. One of its greatest rulers was Maria Therese, mother of 16 children, including Marie Antoinette. Frederick the Fearless was responsible for the national flag, 2 stripes of red with a white stripe in between. Frederick the Fearless won many battles. He was often seen with ... read more

The Grand Vienna Operahouse We have been resting in our home away from home for a few days now.. And have started a much needed diet to try and feel normal again. Trying to do better than pizza for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and have replaced alcohol with water for the time being. We have even started some kind of an exercise regimen in preparation for our trip to India. We came to the scary realization that once we shed off all these layers of clothes..we may not feel as comfortable in our skin :) So far so good...we have tried some great new recipes with lentils, tofu and mushrooms...yum.. We were supposed to go meet our friend Arash in the Italian Alps this week, but after extensive research we decided against it. (It was a ... read more

So the first day of my first round the world trip for 2007. Will be in Vienna for a few days at my office here doing 2006 performance reviews for my direct reports and attending an International Scientific Workshop we are sponsoring for Tick Borne Encephalitis (a disease we manufacture a vaccine against). Although my itinerary may change as my trip progresses, I plan on leaving Vienna for Delhi, India to meet with the Austrian and German Embassies. Will have a Weekend day (Sunday) in Delhi and will try and see a few of the sights in the city. Hopefully no major earthquake in the region like last round the world trip! From Delhi will be taking the long, long flight to Sydney Australia (via Singapore) which I will use as a "home base" for a ... read more

Can you teach an old dog new tricks? As I struggled to get my legs under control I told myself, "Barbara, you can do this!" It was my first attempt at skiing and we had just been fitted out with boots and skis. Now I had to negotiate the turnstyle along with dozens of other people and position myself to get onto the ski lift when it arrived behind me! Easier said than done! My skis had a mind of their own and I kept on getting them entwined with other people as we inched our way forward. With Joel and Clara on either side we managed to get through and miraculously onto the lift. What an incredible experience it was as we were taken to the top of the slope. As we neared the top ... read more

Arrival in Vienna It is hard to believe that Michael (who had only arrived back in Perth two days earlier after spending the year in India and Thailand) and I arrived in Vienna two weeks ago today! It was with great excitement that we started our 34 hour journey from Perth with only 22.5kg of luggage between us! When you know you will be carrying your luggage yourself for three months it helps to only take the bare necessities! Our luggage even contained quite a few presents for Joel's friends! What a great reunion we had at the airport with Joel (whom I hadn't seen for a year) and Clara, Joel's buddy, who had kindly brought her car! Joel looked so well and it was amazing to be together again. Now we just await Colin's arrival ... read more
