For the first time "HI!" ...to all our known and unknown readers! Vienna, that is where we live for almost 10 years. Where we will also stay for the next 3 weeks before we leave for our 5months trip around the world. We did a lot of preparation for the journey, lots of planning, shopping (I think we got more safety-things than we will take clothes with us). We are increasingly becoming nervous about the journey which will lead us to 4 continents (5 if we include our starting point vienna and the short stay at Zurich airport) For starting you will find some photos of vienna and of my hometown Waidhofen, where we saw cows and Feuer-Salamander. Well thats all for today. 2 more weeks of working, one week of additional preparation, and than we ... read more

Thought I’d do a typical tourist thing so I got going early and got my ticket for the Lipizzaner stallions “training with music”. The show is on tour at the moment so it was the younger horses, who were mostly grey still though a couple were pretty close to white. You could see how much better the older ones were, doing the walk backwards things, sideways and the other stuff they do. Despite many announcements about not taking photos some idiots still had their flashes going. At least I had the brains to turn the flash off and hide in the corner ;) From here I walked across to the other side and a tour of the Kaiserapartments, Sisi museum and stupid dinner services, which luckily the audio tour let you skip so I ditched the ... read more

At Ulli’s suggestion I went to Schonbrun Palace the next day. It was pretty impressive, the only bad thing was that they were setting up the Christmas market so my photos have these wooden huts but no market in them. I did the tour of the apartments, which very rather nice. And the old Franz Joseph seemed like a pretty good bloke too - anyone could get an appointment to see him for any reason, you applied and got your date and time and turned out and made your case. Because he saw up to 100 people per morning each appointment was only several minutes long, but could you imagine John Howard doing that? And Franz was emperor to over 35 million people. No photos of course and too many people working there to get away ... read more

So after getting a train from Linz to Vienna, it was full and left me sitting in with the bags for an hour and a half ... much fun!!! Arriving into Westbanhof, I walked to Wombat's hostel, which is one of the best in Europe according to all reports, and it was very good and very clean with everything you expect and want. So no complaints there. After a shower and shave it was off to Shonbrunn Palace to re-aquaint myself with the city I visited just over a year ago with Contiki. So after finding a street leading to Schonbrunn Palace, my first taste of reminiscing came when I passed the infamous bar where Pricey and me had a beer on our first night in Vienna. Good to see its still there and going strong, ... read more

Hi everyone, I am now in Austria and it's snowing, here is my blog update Day 11 (31st) Halloween today and we spent that in Venice. This place is very interesting it’s known as the sinking city as it is slowly sinking into the ocean at around 1 foot per 10 years and this is very evident by the level of some of the doorways which need to be boxed in so the sea water doesn’t flood the residence. There are no cars or bikes at all on the main island so everyone gets around on foot or by boat mainly because the streets are so narrow, it’s really cool. After spending the day on the main island of Venice se went back to the mainland and visited some local pubs - a lot of ... read more

Hello again, I just wanted to add another note about the trip to Vienna and the current conditions here in Vienna. On the way up here I stopped in at the home of Lamborghini and looked through a lot of different models the people there was really relaxed and let me just do whatever I wanted (bar driving them) But I was also fortunate to see the italian lamborghini police car! after checking it out it drove off and the driver couldn't resist showing off - spinning all 4 wheels easly awhile travelling about 80kms per hr.. quite impressive. When I first arrived in Vienna it was icey cold but sunny, today 3rd Nov it has been blizzarding on and off with periods of sun mostly. It's so clean and fresh here but so cold I ... read more

With a few unplanned days on the calendar due to Corsica accommodations falling through, we checked out the last minute deals from Zurich and scored a 3 day package to Vienna. Although we had hoped to make it there on our roadtrip, it was a bit too far to drive, so we were happy to take this opportunity to visit. The weather turned from fall to winter on the 1st of November with chilling winds and threatening snow. We managed to bundle up and still did quite a bit of walking outdoors though. The trick to staying warm is drinking a lot of warm beverages! We were very impressed with how the Viennese served hot chocolate: on a silver tray with a small glass of water. It is always nice to have a bit of water ... read more

Hello from Vienna! Well, it was the best of times, and today was the worst of times. But somehow we managed to stay smiling! Friday after classes, me and JC from Hamilton (who's also studying at the University of Ljubljana with me) took off on 7 hour train ride to Vienna. We arrived late, so basically we just found our hostel and crashed. We're staying at the Hostel Ruthensteiner (http://www.hostelruthensteiner.com/), which is very clean, though a little noisy at night. Yesterday, we started out at the Spanish Riding Museum, watching Lipanzer horses train in a huge indoor ring that seemed more like a palace from the outside than a stable and riding ring! It was more interesting for JC who rode horses for a lot of her life than for me, but still... neat to see. ... read more

9:30PM we boarded our night train to Vienna and took our seats in good spirits and excitement. That, in and of itself, was quite an accomplishment considering we were stuck in a steamy-hot compartment along with four other grumpy Polish people with no hope (really) of getting a single wink of comfortable sleep. Emily, periodically throughout the 8-hour ordeal, stepped out into the corridor for a breath of fresh air. Where as I, sat in my fully-up right seat sweating in the sauna…or so it felt. 5:30AM the train comes to a stop. We arrived to Vienna nearly an hour ahead of schedule (a slight miracle in Europe). Of course, by the time we realized that fun-fact the train had stood empty (aside from us) at the station for a solid 15-minutes. SO we hurriedly scurried ... read more
