The most common phrase running through my head the past couple of days has been, "I am so blessed!" How could I not think this when travelling beneath the most stunning mountain views in the very northern most corner of Slovenia, when traveling along hillside after hillside of gorgeous wine country, and when randomly meeting some of my favorite old friends here in Ljubljana who I otherwise had no way of contacting?? Needless to say the past few days have been wonderful. The high point came yesterday evening, driving through narrow, winding roads (aren't they all in Europe?), tiny little red-roofed villages, surrounded by the hillside after hillside of ancient vineyard in the hidden valley of Brda, near the Slovenia-Italian border. As my companion Iva stated, I really don't know why people dream and desire so ... read more

Hello Everyone! Well, I'm far away from the familiar yet again, and I have to say it feels GREAT! Being back in Ljubljana, even just for one rainy day, I feel like my soul has been revived and is ready to take on the world yet again (don't worry mom, I won't just yet...)! I had a fantastic, but long journey to get here. In Vancouver I met a wonderful woman named Billie, a singer songwriter photographer on her way to the Beatles fest in Manchester. We parted ways in London, where I got on another plane to Venice. After landing it was a bus ride to the train station, a train to a small town on the Slovenian-Italian border called Gorizia, where my friend Iva graciously met me and we drove to Ljubljana, arriving well ... read more

Croatian Coast Road Trip...

Ever wonder where Western Europeans go on holidays to get away from the flocks of North American tourists that descend upon them each summer? Enter the small, yet stunningly beautiful eastern European nation of Croatia. Complete with towering mountains that look out over phenomenal beaches and a gorgeous island-dotted coastline, historical and cultural cities not yet totally overrun by high-end commercial stores maintaining their old "European" charm, and and some of the warmest, most kind-hearted and beautiful people there are, Croatia is by far an excellent destination for all types of travellers. Our road trip started out driving down the beautiful Istrian Peninsula to Pula. We didn't spend much time in the city, but moved quickly to a nearby beach that was probably the most fun and fabulous place I've been in a while. After ... read more

A fairy tale called Bohinj...

There's nothing like escaping reality for a day... Today me and my flatmate took off for a day trip to the beautiful Triglav National Park in the north-west of Slovenia. Triglav is home to 2 amazing lakes - Bled, which I visited at the beginning of my trip, and Bohinj, which we visited today - as well as Slovenia's highest peak, largest waterfall, and best adventure sports resorts and vacation spots. Our day started out just phenomenal. Half way to the bus station, my back tire on my bike decided to kick the bucket. After trying to see if a quick pump up at the gas station would hold (it didn't..), we resolved to try doubling on Elise's bike. This wouldn't have been terrible, except Elise's bike isn't exactly in top shape either: the brakes ... read more

Hello all! I've just returned from a week long stint in Geneva, Switzerland that was just a fantastic learning opportunity and a great getaway as well! My journey began with a fairly uneventful 14 hour train ride. Let me tell you, 14 hours on a train is FAR too long. But it was cheaper than taking a plane even with discount airlines so I survived. That and if I were to have lost luggage at least it would be my own fault! I arrived Sunday morning at the train station, and quickly found my hotel which was thankfully just around the corner. As I was checking in, I turned around to see Kim, Melissa and Caroline, 3 of the 9 people from home that I was meeting there! It was such a great, great feeling ... read more

Allo mes amies! Alors, aujourd'hui je vous ecris en francais! Pourquoi? Car je suis capable!! (Sorry mom! you've already heard the stories anyway!)

Translation of the title for my non-slovene speaking readers: We went 32kms by bike on the path! Yesterday, being a little too cloudy for another hitch-hiking adventure, me and my roommate Honorine decided it was time to bike the path that goes all the way around the city of Ljubljana. The path, 32kms long, was the surrounding line during World War 2, and as far as I have understood where a barb-wire fence lay for 3 years turning the entire city into somewhat of a concentration camp. The entire path has been made into a living memorial space, with trees planted the entire length along both sides and pillars of rememberance with dates and place names. (For a bit more information you can read a CaseStudy) Definitly, this was one of the best things I've done ... read more

Dober Dan! Just wanted to post some random pics from the last week... I've had a great week complete with 2 canadians crashing on my floor, a crazy night of raggae dancing, a cool swinging rockabilly concert, and my first hitch-hiking trip ever that led to a beautiful day in a little village about 20kms north of Ljubljana called Skofja Loka. Sorry, no stories this time... I've got a lot on my mind with school starting again soon! But hope you all enjoy the photo's! Love you all, Mel.... read more

Zivijo! Today, I decided to go out into Ljubljana to "rediscover" my love for the city after being so entrenched in exams and then my little "oops" of a trip to London. And I found it wasn't so hard to do. I must say, Ljubljana is so charming that it is impossible not to fall in love with. The traffic-quiet streets that let you hear your own footsteps on ancient cobblestone roads. Cafe's filled with laid-back locals enjoying an afternoon "Bela Kava". A charming town square in which walkers, joggers, bikers, buses, and taxi's all cohabitate peacefully and strangely without accident. A quiet riverside walkway, lined with large pieces of local art and covered by a willow tree canopy. It's a city that, while very modern (and has perhaps gone a bit overboard with marketing side ... read more
