Background: Populated for centuries by aboriginal peoples, the island was claimed by the Spanish Crown in 1493 following Columbus' second voyage to the Americas. In 1898, after 400 years of colonial rule that saw the indigenous population nearly exterminated and African slave labor introduced, Puerto Rico was ceded to the US as a result of the Spanish-American War. Puerto Ricans were granted US citizenship in 1917. Popularly-elected governors have served since 1948. In 1952, a constitution was enacted providing for internal self government. In plebiscites held in 1967, 1993, and 1998, voters chose to retain commonwealth status.

Adjuntas was founded August 11, 1815, by Diego Maldonado, gaining administrative independence from Utuado. It was one of the main cities where the Anusim, Maranos, and other Sephardi Jews settled. After the mid 1800s, Adjuntas welcomed many immigrants from the Mediterranean islands Corsica and Majorca. Some of them established coffee plantations. Upon arriving in La Guancha May 3 of 2008, we were told of Tatin and Gretel, they own #20 kioske on the boardwalk. They are originally from Cuba. They had a restaurant for many years in Ponce, and then sold it. At that time they opened this Kioske. I am putting pictures of them on here. By the way, she makes several good dishes, including ropa vieja, caldo de pescado (fish soup), and caldo Gallego. This place is a meeting place for Cubans, we all seem to find them.
