Background: Populated for centuries by aboriginal peoples, the island was claimed by the Spanish Crown in 1493 following Columbus' second voyage to the Americas. In 1898, after 400 years of colonial rule that saw the indigenous population nearly exterminated and African slave labor introduced, Puerto Rico was ceded to the US as a result of the Spanish-American War. Puerto Ricans were granted US citizenship in 1917. Popularly-elected governors have served since 1948. In 1952, a constitution was enacted providing for internal self government. In plebiscites held in 1967, 1993, and 1998, voters chose to retain commonwealth status.

I had arranged with Simon, Milton and Raiza from Mayaguez to go to the Island of Vieques for the weekend, for some fun and sun. I met them in San Juan and then we drove together to Fajardo where the ferry’s leave from. As we missed the car ferry we decided to get on the next passenger ferry and instead rent a car when we got to the Island. After a few hours wait we finally got onto the ferry and we all got comfy on the top deck where we could enjoy the fresh warm air, and hopefully some [View Full Entry]

Amy and I drove up to Doel’s house in the afternoon, and the person who greeted us was a bundle of smiles and charisma. He was super friendly and not the stereotype image I had of a Puerto Rican man. He told me that as it was Election Day we were heading of to a friend of his BBQ up in the mountains to follow the elections on TV. The though of not even knowing him and going to a party with all of his friends made me a little nervous, but I was happy to be invited, and to get [View Full Entry]

I arrived at Amy’s apartment, a gorgeous 2 bedroom situated inside a closed urbanisation. Her apartment is gorgeous and she had lit all these aromatic candles everywhere. Her Pets Oso and Carmela were my welcoming committee, and a good job they did, because I felt right at home. She showed me my room, and the bathroom, and I felt like I was in a 5 star hotel. It was definitely the nicest accommodation I had had since I started my travels. My room had a big double bed, and was spacious and light, with big windows, a desk, chairs and a [View Full Entry]

I thought I would spend one night in Rincon, as it is famous for its beaches…….. When I arrived it was already late afternoon and raining, so most of that day was spent on the computer updating my blog and such. It is not really a town, more a strip (a really long strip), as evening arrived the road filled up with cars and people with banners. At first I did not understand, but then I was told it was election time in a few days, and therefore everyone heads for the streets to show their support for their party. I [View Full Entry]

After arriving and getting settled in the cheapest hotel there but still very expensive, I got in touch with Simon from Sweden who a common friend of ours told me lived in Mayaguez. Simon is a student there, and is living his life to the full here, enjoying every moment, and partying big time ;) He is just one of these people you can not like, he is so easy to talk to and so easy to have fun with, that you just feel like you have bumped into an old friend  Simon came and picked me up at the [View Full Entry]

Hello. Well this is the first time I've been able to sit down with my lap top since we started working Tuesday! THings are in full swing here. We loaded in, rigged and have already had two shows. Our third show is in a few hours. Tuesday and Wednesday were very long days. We started Tues at 2:30 unloaded the 10 semi trucks and it took a good four hours to get everything in the venue. Part of my job, as I was getting trained on, is to direct the local help where to put all the crates coming off the [View Full Entry]

We spent 2 nights in San Juan. The Tres Palmas is a dump. $97 per night. Awful! The 26 we left Guayanilla in the am, saying very tearful goodbyes to Hector and Rosita. Then we went to the Club of Pescadores, to say our final goodbyes, this was bad. Very emotional. Latin people are so emotional. Then we were off to Caguas, to Silvia and Emilio, for lunch and goodbyes. Actaully we never say goodbye, just Hasta Luego! From there to San Juan to the motel. We had dinner at Chez by ourselves. Repacked duffle bags, 3 of them, plus 2 [View Full Entry]

Day 3 on the job. We'll today, we've done nothing. I bought batteries! And took a nap on the beach, but that's been the most eventful things to happen. Most of the skaters arrived today, I've only met one. (There is around 35!). I am ready to get working, but trying to enjoy three days in the Caribbean! I read an article today that gave me some good job security. http://movies.yahoo.com/mv/news/va/20081026/122504800200.html. Basically the HSM movie was #1 this weekend at the box office. Good to hear that in an economic crisis, that people are still in need of entertainment. I think [View Full Entry]

San Juan (IPA: ) (from the Spanish San Juan Bautista, "Saint John the Baptist") is the capital and largest municipality in Puerto Rico. As of the 2000 census, it has a population of 433,733, making it the 42nd-largest city under the jurisdiction of the United States. San Juan was founded by Spanish colonists in 1521, who called it Ciudad de Puerto Rico ("Puerto Rico City"). Puerto Rico's capital is the second oldest European-established city in the Americas, after Santo Domingo, now in the Dominican Republic.
