Background: Populated for centuries by aboriginal peoples, the island was claimed by the Spanish Crown in 1493 following Columbus' second voyage to the Americas. In 1898, after 400 years of colonial rule that saw the indigenous population nearly exterminated and African slave labor introduced, Puerto Rico was ceded to the US as a result of the Spanish-American War. Puerto Ricans were granted US citizenship in 1917. Popularly-elected governors have served since 1948. In 1952, a constitution was enacted providing for internal self government. In plebiscites held in 1967, 1993, and 1998, voters chose to retain commonwealth status.

When taking a trip to the Junque, spend the night at Ceiba, experiment with Guayama area and Punta Patillas. Fajardo is a must, West Marine and Skippers Marine and the ferries. Skipper cheaper than West. As in most towns of Puerto Rico it was founded on the Christian ideas and faith statements of the Catholic church which prevailed in previous centuries through Spaniard tradition. The town still maintains a central Catholic church which can be found in the town square. Ceiba (sai-EE-bah) is a small town in northeast Puerto Rico. It is named after the famous Ceiba tree. They live in Guayaniya. They also have a Kioske on Sundays. They asked to come by, so we did. Hector gave us tour of the area. There is a bar and grill called the Aeropuerto. Planes land by water. Interesting concept. So we spent the afternoon with them. Several of their friends came by to visit and of course a domino game crept up. Domino here is double 6, and there are rules to follow and they pay you by points each hand, playing to 200. [View Full Entry]

This is a sad story, I am writing this on the 31st of August. About a month ago, Oracle III, a Canadian Fountain Pagot, Venezia model, came into Ponce anchorage. The Club has kind of appointed Maribel to receive the visitors. So I make my way over, explain the ins and outs of the area...Make them feel welcome. There is a couple Soto and Mike, and their sons, Dantes 6 and Mateo 9. We have become friendly with them. Both Mike and Soto are Reike Masters. Soto's family came in from Canada to visit, they rented a condo in Loisa for [View Full Entry]

This may be the last respectable photo of me seen for quite a while. This was taken at the USCG Sector San Juan Change of Command Ceremony in July 2008. I'm second from left. The other guys are fri... [more]
It was my friend Cesar V. who most recently advised me that I'm an idiot. I'm a little bit concerned only because he's usually right about these sorts of things. Regardless, tomorrow will be my final day of duty after 14+ years in the U. S. Coast Guard, as I've decided to take a 2-yr leave of absence to to some travelling. I'm certainly going to miss many of the outstanding people that I was fortunate enough to serve with and work alongside, both in the CG and in the maritime industry; but I'm also very excited about getting started on [View Full Entry]

Today we drove to Salinas. Visited with Julio and Joy for awhile. On the way there we stopped for lunch at La Lechonera, for fish that was out this world, and cheap. After visiting for awhile, the 4 of us decided it was time to explore a bit more. We climbed aboard their minivan, and off we went to another adventure. This time we headed East on #3. We went to Guayana, where across from the Cathedral, San Antonio de Padua, who happens to be Maribel's Saint. Guayama is known as "La Ciudad Bruja" (witch city) or "Pueblo de los Brujos" [View Full Entry]

Day 2 and the good news is I've found a card reader to upload my photos. DaHouse hotel continues to impress me. I would recomment it to anyone visiting SJ. The rooftop deck and pool were a pleasant surprise. This morning I ran for about 45 minutes. It was already warm and humid even at 7am. The spray from the fountian was very refreshing. the paseo de la pricesia is a great place to run, but i think it should be renamed padeo del la feline. I counted 30 cats along the 2 mile walk. There may have been only 29 [View Full Entry]

Cabo Rojo
the lighthouse
In the morning, the group headed down to Cabo Rojo - the cliffs not the town. The cliffs are at the Southwestern most point of the island. supposedly, as you enter the bay from the Caribbean, when the sun hits them just right, the cliffs shine a ruby red. There is a lighthouse up there that was used for quite a while but not any more. There were tons of hermit crabs and lizards that Brady and Cliff loved playing with. The beach in the bay is white sand, but super salty, since as you head more inland, there are salt [View Full Entry]

Looking down to the 2nd level
Today, 4 of us went up to San Juan to walk around and enjoy the old city. Brady had bad memories of last year (2nd degree sunburn compounded by 95 degree weather) and Megan had her foot stung by a wasp a couple days before and decided that walking around all day would not be the best action to take. They stayed at the house, walked into town (slowly) and ate at Galloway's again, and found a shallow area where hundreds of tiny, quarter sized crabs were hanging out. They also swam in the pool and did some laundry. Jerid, Krystal, [View Full Entry]

Greetings from Viejo San Juan, PR. It's a little after 10pm and I'm struggling to stay awake. The worst news of the day is that I forgot my camera's usb cable, so I can't upload any photos. I'll try to buy another one here or have mine shipped to me in Bequia. So, for now all you get are these boring "no photo" blogs. SORRY! I arrived in SJ about 3:30. I'm staying at a hotel called "DaHouse". When the taxi driver dropped me off I couldn't even find the front door. I asked the bartender across the alley and he [View Full Entry]
