13 April 2000 Thursday. For the kids Spring Break we decided to fly to Puerto Rico. We all had an early start…3:30 am for Linda, 4 am for me and 4:30 am for the kids…in time for the taxi which arrived at 5 am. It was dark and cold; Rosanna was the only one to refuse to wear a jacket knowing that she wouldn’t need it where we were going…she is the stubborn one. We departed Reagan National at 6:30 am for Puerto Rico, via St Louis. We were using TWA frequent flyer miles so had to go through their hub…maybe that’s why they got eaten up by American…who wants to fly down the East or West Coasts via the middle of the country? Linda was surprised at the meager airline food…no surprise to me as ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Puerto Rico January 10th 2000

The first impression was a very well constructed dock but with the feeling of authentic Latin flavor, kind people trying to make their day, suddenly after getting out the ship my friends an me were surrouded by Locals offering every kind of service (that made me feel like in my country) and we pick a taxi driver who offered to take us to a tour to San Juan for a very fair fare. What an amazing sight, Puerto Rico is a beautifull and amazing place to spend your vacation, the only thing I regreted was not having more time to spend. The first place where we go was ... read more

Our cruise visited the islands of St Thomas, Sint Maarten/Saint Martin, Martinique, and Curaçao - all new to my father and myself. These were relaxed days in Caribbean warmth, dedicated to a mild amount of site seeing. Dinners were events at the end of the day, and my father collected all the menus, which are shown as photos in this blog. Tuesday March 17 Tuesday morning our bags going to the ship were to be outside our room door by 8:30 AM. We left for the Princess ship about 12:30 for Rum lunch. The afternoon was spent getting acquainted with the ship. We booked our tours for the 5 stops on our route. Dinner on board. The ship left the dock at 11:00 PM. We were on the upper deck for the sail out of the ... read more

Before Panama was open to land tours, my father and I took a cruise through the Panama Canal. As an engineer, he was fascinated by its construction. He read and urged me to read The Path Between the Seas: The Creation of the Panama Canal, 1870-1914 . Without this historical guide, looking at the water and buildings would have had little meaning. The Canal passage takes only one day; we agreed to spend some time in San Juan , Puerto Rico to extend our holiday. My father was the one to take notes, and his laconic voice focused on the practical details. Without digital camera... read more
