Friday, May 30, 2014 Our household was up early this morning. Todd was up at 4:00 am, all others 5:30 am. You know me, have to be up early. We are so excited to take our cruise, third one in six months. After doing some last minute organizing at the house and saying our goodbye’s to the dogs, we were off to the airport to catch our flight to DFW at 8:45am. Thank goodness for the HOV lanes, it made the trip to the airport quicker that time of day.
We arrived at the Houston airport around 7:45 am and went through security without any major issues. We boarded our American Airlines flight and left on time. We arrived in DFW 15 minutes early. This is great news; however our gate was not available. We ended waiting for our gate only a few minutes.
Once at the DFW airport, we traveled from Terminal C to Terminal A where our gate is. Since we have a three hour layover, we settled into the Admirals Club-Terminal A. Michael always loves visiting the Admirals club.
After about 2 hours into our stay
at the Admirals Club, we heard from Jenny and Marcus, they arrived early in DFW. There was not enough time for them to visit with us at the club, instead we meet them at the Subway for lunch, close to our gate, A36 to travel to San Juan. After a quick lunch at Subway (Jenny and Marcus brought their lunch), we headed to our gate. We were able to board early since I had some status on AA. Cindy, Michael and I say in row 9, which is an exit row in front of coach. Jenny and Marcus sat in row 35. Our AA plane was a 757, configuration is a 3 and 3 in coach. The staff on the plane was super nice. I connected well with a few of the flight attendants. One even gave me a small bottle of Bailey’s for my coffee. I kept it so Cindy and I could enjoy on our trip.
After boarding our flight, we were off to San Juan. Cindy and Michael slept off and on during the 4.20 hour flight, I slept some, and however I graded papers mostly. I walked around some during the flight to
check on Jenny and Marcus.
We arrived in San Juan, Puerto 15 minutes late, 6:45 pm. We deplaned and quickly made our way down to get our luggage. Everyone’s luggage arrived safely, thank goodness. We then went out to the cab stand were able to secure a van taxi for all five of us, this was super simple and kept the costs down. The fare was $13.00 plus $1.00 per bag. For $20.00 we arrived at our hotel, which by the way is about 5 minutes away. The hotel we are staying at is Embassy Suites. We booked a tw0 bedroom suite (2 bedroom, two bathrooms, and a sleeper couch).
While waiting in line to check-in, I stopped by the tour desk to sign our tour voucher for the Bacardi Rum tour in the morning. After checking in, I chatted with the concierge about dining options. We are about one block away from where the restaurants are.
We quickly dropped off our bags in the rooms, freshened up, and then made it out to the city to find a place to eat. There was some discussion among the group about eating
Ponderosa, however we settled on Chili’s. It was getting late so we did not want to spend much time looking for a place to eat.
The service at Chili’s was on Island time, very very slow, however it was busy too. Our food was really good though. Michael was able to partake in alcohol beverages. The drinking age is 18 years old here, good lord.
After a good dinner, we returned back to the hotel room. Jennifer, Michael, and Marcus went to the casino at our hotel, Todd stayed in the room to grade papers, and Cindy retired for the evening.
A lot of excitement building up to today. Jennifer, Michael, and Marcus have never been to San Juan, Puerto Rico. They were very excited about seeing the area for the first time. Cindy and I visited Puerto Rico exactly 25 years ago, celebrating my undergraduate degree completion. The whole theme for this trip is celebrate the graduation on Michael from High School and Jennifer from college this December. Fun times ahead.
