To our delight, even though we were getting rained on and hiking up a vertical trail through mud to get to this hostel, the Lost and Found EcoLodge turned out to be a GREAT place to stay for a few days! The atmosphere there was quite relaxed with many travelers who were there to volunteer or passing through to see the animals and insects. Numerous hikes, waterfalls, swimming holes, horseback riding, coffee farming and Foosball were a few of the things that kept us busy. Most notable was Rocky, a rescued kinckajou who loved to wrestle visitor heads while trying to chew on ears and noses!! He was such an amazing animal. At night other animals Olingos, Cacomistles and Kinkajous would come to feed on bananas and other fruits! It was awesome to see so closely ... read more

Hi Everybody! Friday We enjoyed our time in Jaco, Costa Rica. Our hotel was first class and located right on the beach. It had a nice casino and restaurant. We were able to travel from Jaco to the capital city, San Jose, by a comfortable van. We traveled over mountains with curvy roads and had spectacular views. We saw farming on terraces, coffee farms, a winery, many different fruit trees. Before leaving Jaco, we had a travel agent book a nice hotel for us in San Jose. It is not a city where you want to spend a lot of time. We left San Jose on a big Greyhound type bus. We traveled again over hills and mountains. We went through a Cloud Forest. I think it was probably the Tapanti National Park. Cloud forests are ... read more

Hello everyone, it has been a while! I was planned to write since last week but I got a cold last week which didn't allow me to write anything. Feria Internacional de David The "Feria Internacional de David" (David's International Fair) started on March 12th. It was the 54th annual fair held in the city of David and it lasts for 10 days. What's the fair all about? It's a big area surrounded by high walls, filled with stands where they sell food, drinks, handicrafts, clothes etc. etc...all kinds of (cultural) stuff. There is also a small theme park with different attractios and the well known open-air disco's are there too: Pub Herrerano (P.H) and X-Zone Sensation. I went to the fair 8 of the 10 days, visiting P.H but also walking around the place. It's ... read more

Left early from Boquete, only took about an hour this time to get to David where I had a terrible time getting a ride to the Lost and Found place, my Spanish is not very good and the bus conductor is speaking so rapidly i cant keep up, a nice Belgian dude helped me out he was already sat at the collectivo going for Changuinola, between the two of us we managed to understand the guy but not without difficulty, most of the time me and the Belgian look at each other trying to see if one of us understood the bus conductor, in the end we realized he was saying he would take me on but have to pay the full fare of $5, so i said no problem just let me on! And true ... read more

The bus ride to David, Panama took us to different types of climates in the highlands and in the dry humid areas of Costa Rica, soon as we got down the mountains it was quite hot and we struggled , the bus is not airconditioned. While having a lunch stop, we chatted with a local truck driver going to panama to pick up his load, we met Hannah, the only other backpacker in the bus, from NZ, very friendly, she thought of going to Boquete with me but changed her plans later. Daniel is still undecided.. At the border we got out of CR easily then at the Panamanian side, Hannah and i have to buy a visa for $5, so we have to go through all this paperwork, while Daniel a brit got a stamp ... read more

On 2/6 we had a delightful time. We went up to the mountain town of Boquete again and found a private home with an incredible garden that we could tour. It must have been an acre of the most manicured garden in Panama. There were six ponds with hundreds of Kio of every color. We wanted to go snorkeling, but the wind had been blowing so hard for the last three days the idea of being on the water didn’t sound like fun. After the garden, we found an animal rescue shelter that also had very nice gardens. But with monkeys, birds, parrots, an otter cat (not the technical name) that will grow up to be four feet long and two adorable Ocelot kittens. Rebecca spent an hour talking to a couple of Hiaasen McCaw’s and ... read more

"Magnentron", the greatest word in human history. The English equivalent, "microwave". Team tango entered Panama and caught a bus to the highlands. We stumbled upon a vulnerable small Scandanavian looking boy by the name of Ard Jan Bos, aka "magnentron", he turned out to be a drunken Dutch woman abuser, only joking, he was just a little drunk and an occasional abuser of women, but we grew to love him like a bastard step-child. We infact created the greatest traveling team known to mankind, "Team Reverse Oreo". On our first mission through the hills of Boquete we stumbled upon a family of farmers including a 90 year old mumbling dribbling old man with at the height of fasion with his bright yellow Helly Hanson fleece jumper. A litre of rum, 39 oranges and 16 dribbles later ... read more

We had taken onboard a glowing recommendation from a Swedish couple that we’d met in Boquete to include three nights in Panama’s only cloud forest on our itinerary. A great opportunity to hone our wildlife spotting abilities ahead of Costa Rica and three nights for the price of two had us sold. Hostels can attract some very awkward blends of folk but equally they have an uncanny ability to provide an irresistible concoction of travellers with whom to share a beer or two. Lost & Found our tree house like home dished up the latter. A heavy helping of two very musically talented guitar playing French Canadian’s (Sebastian and Serg); Andrew the Canadian hostel owner; Tania and Katie a couple of Americans on holiday celebrating their 30th birthdays; and last but certainly not least Greg a ... read more

Our original New Year’s Eve plan was to go to Bocas del Toro a Carribean archipelago in the north western corner of Panama. However, reading between the lines of people’s experiences there and a quick scout around online left us thinking that Bocas the US’s latest Cancun-ised party spot was perhaps best left off our itinerary. Instead we elected for the rather more sedate mountain town of Boquete. Unfortunately also evaded by Americans but this lot were the retiree set whom we felt would be a little more manageable. We stayed in what is certainly the most comfortable hostel thus far. Right on a little river this Swiss style chalet house equipped with an expansive dining table, kitchen with a fridge which could comfortably house a family of four and a handy outside area with do-it-yourself ... read more

From Nicaragua we motored through Costa Rica to Panama just stopping for a nights rest in San Jose (Costa Rica’s capital). We have about two weeks to explore Panama the southern most country of Central American before we return to Costa Rica on January 13th to rendezvous with both sets of parents for two weeks. Panama was in our minds as just another country in the region and knowing nothing more about it than that it possessed a rather famous canal we did not have it down as a potential highlight. However, we’ve been impressed. Actually very impressed. Welcoming and friendly locals, endless options on enticing places to explore and prices not far removed from Nicaragua. A pretty irresistible blend. On our first day in the country we discovered the Purple House in David, Panama’s second ... read more
