Need some help exploring the Darien
14 years ago, July 10th 2009 No: 1 Msg: #79052
Hello,

So there will be three possibly four young females in Panama... i definately want to go and explore parts of the Darien to see some of the beautiful wildlife...

Has anyone ever done this? Is it really that unsafe? all i keep hearing is that it is full of guerilla militants, kidnapping is very high and generally unsafe?

Are there any tour companies - any personal guides that anyone knows of?

Any help - ideas - thoughts would be appreciated 😊 Reply to this

Chanel,

When I was in Panama, I was considering doing a short trek with Ancon Expeditions, but decided against it due to cost constraints. That said, while I'm not a easy scaredycat, I wouldn't suggest it outside of an organized tour. I think, from everything I've heard/read, this is one time the threats are not being blown out of proportion. I have never heard a single person say "oh, it's exaggerated", like with other places/supposed threats to safety. Reply to this

Thanks Gary - that is the only company i can seem to find that do it. However like you i think it is very expensive i was hoping there was another company that anyone knew of that did it.

I would never go on my own - so dangerous but would love to go and experience it safely i guess.

Any other suggestions of tour companies that do it? Reply to this

Chanel,
I would recomend you get in touch with Sendero Panama. The staff and naturalist are some of the most experienced in Panama.
