Our Arrival Our minibus from Leon dropped us off at the North bus station on the main highway. We walked right up the Panamerican Highway, then turned left towards the Cathedral to find a place to stay. Where We Stayed Hostal El Albergue - Calle 3a NE just west of Avenue Central. C$400 for a double room with bathroom and TV and free purified water and coffee. What We Did Visited Somoto Canyon - we booked a guide through Sonati hostal which cost $25 each for the longer trip. They called the guide who met us at the bus stop in Somoto. To get to Somoto we caught the bus at 6:30am from opposite the garage on the main highway near Calle Transversal. It took about 2 hours and cost C$28. We were met by our ... read more

The third Central American peak on my tick list was Pico Mogotón in Nicaragua situated directly on the border with Honduras. During the 1980s Nicaraguan Contra War the Sandinista government, fearing a US invasion from Honduras, heavily mined the area. The Nicaraguan army has since cleared the area of mines and a handful of trekkers have been tagging the peak ever since. A guide is still an excellent idea not only because of the possibility of a stray mine but because the trail is mostly unmarked, very indistinct, and difficult to follow in places. I was nearly snubbed not because of the trek itself but because I could not find the farm where the trail starts and guides are procured. By the time I found the farm with the assistance of a logging truck driver it ... read more

As we mentioned in our last blog, we took a bus to Nicaragua last Tuesday. After a few hours we reached the border and it took 3 hours to cross it... First we got out of the bus to let our passport stamp by the Costa Rican officials. After everybody was back on the bus, the driver came to collect our passports and some money (without further explanation, so some of us got worried after a while...). A kilometer further we had to get out of the bus again and collect our luggage. It was a chaotic place, people selling all kind of stuff, offering to change money or trying to carry your luggage to earn something. And in between all this there were some long tables where you had to put your luggage, waiting for ... read more

We arrived late noche on Saturday the 8th of December. That was one of the longest days of my liiiiife. Got up at 1am to drive to St Louis airport. Flew at 6am but for whatever reason when checking in it took foreeeeever, something wrong with checking in Isabel. As a result, the plane was closing as we threw ourselves into the plane. Didn't have to pay extra for the 3rd bag, which was nice and since Isabel didn't have bording pass it was good that we were so late no one paid attention. Okay, so now we're leaving St. Louis. Arrive in Miami and eat and use the bathroom, etc. Isabel was running everywhere and slammed herself in to the glass window three times, surprised that she couldn't keep running and was flat on her ... read more

It's the middle of November 2012, which means I arrived in Moropoto about 4 years ago as a Peace Corps Agriculture & Food Security volunteer. Lenin and I left Nicaragua about the 3rd week of January 2011. I won't bore you with details, but here are the highlights..... Realized I came home a few weeks pregnant; Lenin got his green card on St. Patricks Day; we worked over the summer; Isabel Vilma Torrez-Baade was born on October 17th, 2011; Lenin passed his full driving test just about that time. Now Isabel is a year old but acts so much older! I am 30 (!). Lenin continues working at the resort. He just requested all of his days that he could and we are headed back to Nicaragua for the holidays. We'll be here for Thanksgiving and ... read more

Selva Negra is a paradise-like eco-lodge and organic coffee plantation in the mountains of Nicaragua between Matagalpa and Jinoteca. Their lodge restaurant sits on the edge of a huge fish pond that mirrors the surrounding alpine jungle. Among the inhabitants are a flock of about a dozen white geese that live and feed at the sight and that appear daily as they make their rounds of the estate. Like childhood images of farm animal illustrations, the dozen or so geese of Selva Negra line up like a single file of wibble-wobbling soldiers as they exit the water in perfect cadence to an unheard beat and march in a perfect line on one of the paved pathways that interlace the resort. Their mission, known only among their flock, includes marching past manicured flower beds, guest cabins, and ... read more

Die Finca ... read more
