How quickly plans can change when you have no itinerary. This afternoon we met two canadians on their way to the Bay Islands (Roatan & Utila). They informed us that if we left tomorrow morning at 5am we could be on the islands around 5pm. For some reason we never looked into it - just figuring that the trip was much longer than that. So - tomorrow we leave for Utila and I hope to get PADI certified to open water dive. It sounds like it is one of the cheapest places in the world to get certified, but also has good diving and high quality instructors. Amy is still undecided about getting certified - she will decide when she learns more at the island. Getting certified is usually four days as I understand and an ... read more

This morning we headed for some breakfast at Comedor Mary. We had a traditional Central American breakfast with some coffee and a Mango licuado (smoothie). I believe the whole meal for the two of us was about L150 (Limpira is the currency of Honduras) - which is probably about $8. After our meal we headed to the Copan Ruins - the main reason for our stop here. The ruins are located about one kilometer outside of the town of Copan Ruinas - but there is a footpath the whole way and it is a very easy walk. On the way to the ruins we crossed the copan river and saw a huge tree! We also saw an interesting caterpillar that was a super bright green. The entrance to the ruins costs L285 or $15 - I ... read more

The last few days around Antigua have been very nice. The town is very colonial and has a unique charm to it. It definitely did not disappoint and I see the appeal for many of the ex-pats that have made Antigua home. We had some good food here and our last night consisted of a couple of bottles of wine shared between Cole, Jenaye, Amy and I. The wine was from Argentina and Chile. One bottle was Q20 (about $2.50) and was very drinkable - the other bottle was Q29 (less than $4) and was very excellent, it had a woody flavor which I really enjoy in a bottle of wine. At 7am Mom, Dad, Cole, and Jenaye headed for the airport for their noon flight, apparently traffic from Antigua to Guatemala City is pretty bad ... read more

So ... they say absence makes the heart grow fonder. I think what it really does is just helps you forget all the unpleasant things. This weekend the reality came back full force: flu-like sickness for two days; baby scorpions in the bathroom; a huge brown, hairy spider the size of my hand (ok, maybe the size of my palm), etc. Thankfully I'm better today, just a bit weak and very careful with what I'm eating. Tomorrow the plan is to go with Nahun and Aura to Guatemala for a Dr. apt, including an ultrasound and finding out if the baby is a boy or girl! :) We finished "painting" the inside of the little house. They want me to "move in" for my last nights here, but I'm not so excited about sleeping with fresh ... read more

I've arrived again to spend about two and a half weeks in my "querido Honduras". Arriving last week was both wonderful and strange. The only way I can think to describe it is stepping into another world. Maybe a bit like Narnia. I've been away for years and I mentally know of my life back in the states, but since the first moment of stepping off the plane in San Pedro, my world became Honduras and everything else is like a faint memory or dream. In the past week I've helped out my Honduran family in their "comedor" in the market (a small eatery), spent a morning painting walls with cement (which I will most likely do more before I leave); we've been to two "cumpleaños" (one of which we walked about 45 minutes into a ... read more

To get to Copan from San Juan we had 19 hrs of bus journeys and two stopovers in Managua and San Pedro Sula. Copan were our first Mayan ruins of the trip and they were quite awe inspiring. There was a huge grand central staircase in the ruins that looked incredible and there were several big pyramids dotted about. The ruins were surrounded by hundreds of square miles of rainforest, the views from the pyramids were cool. Also in the rainforest we managed to see several Scarlet Macaws. The town of Copan Ruinas was a nice quiet town high up in the jungle. It had narrow sloping cobble streets and nice buildings. We left after one night to head to the Bay Islands. As we left the headline in the paper was "massacre in Copan". We ... read more

M - Copan Ruinas is a pretty and interesting little town with two added bonuses. The first, and currently more famous of the two, is the Mayan Ruins which are just outside of the town. The second, not so well known, is the locally brewed German beer. Yes, if you wonder down the back streets you can find a low volume but extremely professional German very Micro-Brewery. We have promised the brewer, Thomas, that we would not write anything about his establishment on TripAdvisor as he basically doesn’t want to become part of the tourist trail. He currently brews his beer as a hobby/small business and his Honduran wife cooks German food and they don’t want to be overwhelmed. Good luck to him on the latter. I lived in Germany for 6 months and I can ... read more

The Mayan ruins are quite impressive and span around 27 sq km. People have lived in this area since at least 1200 BC. Macayla really enjoyed the ruins and it sparked her fantasy of becoming an archaeologist again. We spent the entire morning there before hopping on a bus to Guatemala. The plan was to head toward Esquipulas where there is a grande basilica that holds the Black Christ. Supposedly the Black Christ has healing powers and because of this people travel to this destination in large numbers sometimes entering on their knees. There was no direct way to get there and by the time we made it to Chiqimula, it was dark and the buses stopped running to that location. Maybe after Spanish school we can head back there. ... read more

One day in San Pedro Sula was enough. No backpackers around and not all that safe in most parts. We took a bus to Copan Ruinas to see the ruins of a once lost Mayan city. We arrived in Copan in the late afternoon and our hostel, Iguana Azul, was overbooked and we were unable to stay there. We went to the next hostel that had WIFI since Macayla requires that at every stay and found the Via Via Cafe and hostel. This place has a great vibe and Abel is fantastic with lots of information and helpful tips. Abel suggested purchasing tickets to Macaw Mountain, a bird sanctuary, which we decided to do first. This sanctuary has several different types of Macaws, Toucans, owls, and various other birds. Macayla was quite pleased with the interactive ... read more
