"I've just spotted a little owl." It's 5.40am and my heart misses a beat. A man with a white plaited beard is standing in the far corner of the room. What the hell, has he been in here all night?! I remember where I am. It's Malcolm the bird man. We met Malcolm the night before in the D&D brewery, near Los Naranjos. Malcolm is originally from Ipswich in England and I'd say he is in his sixties. His speech was soft and slowed, like someone pressing the slightest of touches on a record of his voice spinning on a turntable - a result of travelling the four corners of the globe for years spotting birds while indulging in a cocktail of drugs. He fascinated us with his knowledge of all things feathered and a 6am ... read more

Without hanging around in San Pedro Sula for too long we headed to Lago de Yojoa, a beautiful lake nestled in West Central Honduras, more specifically to the small village of Los Naranjos. The day didn´t start too great when getting off the bus at our destination we managed to leave the garlic baguette that we had just bought from a bakery before leaving San Pedro. We soon found our way to the hostal which was also a micro-brewery brewing traditional ales as well as more elabourate flavours including apricot and chocolate raspberry. We set up our tent and headed off for the afternoon to hire a rowing boat and explore the lake, the village was on a canal that led to the lake after a few hundred meters. The boat journey was interesting, apparently rowing ... read more

so we have made the move...lindsie and i are on the road yet again...albeit one motorcycle less and not nearly as financially secure as hoped...but at least moving. our last month or so in antigua was hectic but fun...we worked as much as we could, and spent lot´s time figuring out how to downsize all of the crap we had accumulated (other than the motorcycle we were able to fenangle two beers for some crappy purple snorkel gear...all else was sacrifised to the reilly´s staff). speaking of the motorcycle...with much sadness, lindsie´s bike was sold to a guatemalan guy named marcelo...let me tell you how much of a nightmare it is to import/sell u.s. bikes in guatemala...no i won´t tell you, it was just scary...we had to bring our hitman/translator/drinking partner to the border with us ... read more

I was a little dubious at first when a group of Honduran bus drivers milling under a shady tree (smoking cigarettes, drinking cola and not looking like they were about to do any bus-driving anytime soon) told me to go to the edge of the city and hitch a ride instead of catching a bus. I'd arrived in the Honduran border town of Marcala after my last blog had me leaving El Salvador, and was hoping to get a bus west across the country, only to find out that the last one left 10 minutes ago and the next one wasn't leaving for 5 hours. I'm not usually one to hang out on the side of the road of a country I've only just arrived in and am still getting to grips with the language of, ... read more

We stayed at a picturesque family-run hostel called El Cortijo del Lago (The Farmhouse of the Lake) owned by an American ex-pat, his Honduran wife, and their children. It sprawled leisurely across a small valley away from the road and overlooking the lake. With the big, breezy screened-in common areas, books and board games, canoes and foosball, it felt a lot like summer camp. We managed to navigate a cobbled dock-boat out into the lake (to anchor and swim off) - it was a 6´x 6´ platform mounted and precariously balanced on a couple of narrow pontoons - it was rather awkward but fun to maneuver with some Brits we met. The egrets and the hawks soaring and feeding above the shores reminded us that this spot of nature hadn´t yet been conquered by man. The ... read more

For our weekend off, we decided to visit the largest lake in Honduras (well, it is one of the only lakes), Lake Yojoa. We started our journey Friday, as soon as we were done with work, around 1pm. We traveled to Tegus from there, got to Tegus, ordered a pizza from pizza hut, picked up a few other things from the store and head off to the lake around 3pm. We finally arrived at our final destination around 7:30pm that evening. We had decided to stay at a “hotel” recommended by other NPH volunteers, called D&D Brewery. It is owned by this American guy who brews his own beer there. Everyone in the small surrounding town knows him as “the gringo who makes beer.” It was nestled back down a little dirt road, pretty tricky to ... read more

Hi everybody, thanks for the messages. We´re doing fine, we´re at Lago de Yojoa now at the D &D Brewery which is very nice. It´s owned by a guy named Bob who moved here from Oregon and started a microbrewery and lodge. We had a nice cabin last night, but may need to switch to a room today as a lot of people were coming out here because of the storm. As you probably know Hurricane Felix hit Nicaragua today as a Cat 5 and will be down to a tropical storm today if it isn´t already. It had been predicted to hit the island Utila where we were up until yesterday when we left and came here. Now it looks like the lake will be getting more rain than the island! Figures. The island was ... read more

Hola - Que Pexi? Hope you're not getting bored with these blogs yet! Thanks for your comments its good to know some of you are reading them. So our weekend away was great. The journey there and back was a nightmare because it was 9 hours each way. A bus from here to Tegus, a taxi, another bus to La guama, another to La Pena Blanca and another to the hostel. So you can imagine we were hot, smelly, and hoped to god that the place we were staying at was good! The bus we took from Tegus to La Guama is called a Chicken Bus - i think because they squeeze as many of us in as possible. The bus looked and smelt like it was 100 years old and the engine sounded like ... read more

YojoaRobertson¡Feliz cumpleaños a ti! ¡Feliz cumpleaños a ti! ¡Feliz cumpleaños a Chance! ¡Feliz cumpleaños a ti! Feliz cumpleaños mi amor. Me hace falta mucho. Tu eres mi corazon. I'm starting to write in spanish in my journal. I'll probably end up blogging in spanish as well. How exciting! We stayed 2 nights at this place called D y D bed and breakfast and microbrewery. It was very secluded. You have to set out for a journey to really get anywhere. The place is very self sufficient and it has a pool! Oth yeah! We spent the first day chilling out since we travelled for a good amount of time from Copan on a bus to San Pedro. In San Pedro we had to find the central bus station and find a bus called El Mochito. From ... read more

Friday, March 2, 2007 Another early morning and another wonderful breakfast. We then set off for the lake. We walked about 10 minutes through town and got to the area where they keep the rowboats... same area that I was at last time I was there. The four of us got into the boat with our 20 year old tour guide/rower (his name is escaping me) and set off to the main open area of the lake. I must say, the last boat rower I had (who was only about 12) was about 10 times better at rowing. Perhaps he was just eager and working hard. This guy that we had this time was SO slow. Mom was even threatening to start rowing. Dad actually did for a bit. Too funny. It was pretty nice ... read more
