When we read that there was a craft brewery with its own lodge/hotel in the middle of nowhere in central Honduras, we just had to go there! D&D Brewerylived up to our expectations, but there were certainly aspects that wouldn't be particularly difficult improve. The wait for food, be it breakfast or dinner, is much longer than it should be. The staff (particularly the women) need to smile. I'm not saying they need to smile more, they just need to smile. Maybe once, when they take your order! The ONLY beers on offer are craft and come at a price. It would be nice to sit out in the evening and have some cheap local beer after a craft one with dinner. Los Naranjos is a really nice village just to wander around. It's a good ... read more

After a good night of rest, we woke up and headed to the hotel restaurant for a caffeine fix and breakfast. We got on the road around 8:30, and knew we had about 8 hours of driving ahead of us, plus a border crossing, but were hoping we'd be able to make it to Leon before nightfall. Today, the weather had cleared, it was sunny and beautiful, and the traffic was pretty light. We were feeling good about the time we were making. We did a short stop for photos by Lago Yojoa, and then continued on. We were getting near the border by around 4, and knew that Leon was still almost 2 hours on the other side, but were still hoping we wouldn't have to do too much driving in the dark. We had ... read more

Tourism from outside Honduras to Lake Yojoa almost exclusively revolves around D&D Brewery (Hostel, Hotel and Tour company). It's super lovely with beers brewed on site, a fire pit to sit around in the evening and probably the friendliest tour guide in the world. When we arrived from Copan, via the biggest bus station I've ever seen in San Pedro Sula, the bus knew exactly where to drop us off - very handy! We spent the afternoon playing cornhole (a bean bag toss game) and trying a couple of the brews. The hostel is surrounded by trees and there are lots of hummingbird feeders - I was very entertained watching them fly around, but don't think I will ever manage to photo one! The next morning we went down the canal by rowing boat, looking at ... read more

We shared a cab to the bus station and caught a bus to San Pedro Sula. Wait, you may be thinking, isn't that the murder capital of the world? Why yes it is. That being said the city is much nicer looking than many others and the bus station is amazing! I believe it is the largest bus station in Central America and it has lots of stores and food stands and it really is nice. Unfortunately we stand out like sore thumbs with our huge packs on our back so many people are yelling cities at us, trying to get us to buy tickets but I'm getting pretty darn good at ignoring salesmen. We found the terminal we needed to be on and hopped on the bus which was leaving just then. We were the ... read more

D&D Ale Brewery is in a quiet little town amongst several others situated high in the mountains and has already become another favorite stop of ours!!! Planning on pitching a tent and enjoying the cooler climate in these dizzy heights we took one look .... Just out of interest! at the private room with a fan and somehow pitching tents went on the back burner, so we dropped our bags with a giggle and quickly ordered our ale at the bar. Spending our first night exploring the brewery's grounds and talking to the staff it was clear that there was plenty to do here, even a top 10 things to do listed on the bar wall. Experimenting the different ales with some good food we discussed which activities we fancied doing. We also noticed that we ... read more

The Belizean countryside is nothing like Belize City. Safe, relaxed, mellow and incredibly easy to strike up casual conversations. The hawkers, street sellers, bus drivers, attendants and country folk are polite, accepting and easily approachable for directions or advice. We witnessed this bussing it south on the Hummingbird Highway from Belize City to the small fishing town of Placencia. Along the way I was approached by the country's Softball Sports Commissioner. He not only informed us of the 2012 World Softball Tournament whereby Belize is the host country , but how to get to Placencia quicker and cheaper. We followed his advice, ending up in the village of Independence, catching a ride on a skiff named the Hokey Pokey, skirting mangrove shores until a sundown arrival at Placencia. Placencia is the typical sleepy Caribbean seaside village. ... read more

Having been away for three months Rachel decided it was high time she came to check up on me & for the past two weeks we have been travelling through Honduras together. After a quick exit from San Pedro Sula (the lonely planet lists leaving SPS as one of the highlights of the country) we headed inland to the vast Lago de Yojoa. The lake is famed for it's bird life and is reputed to have around 440 different species, binoculars at the ready Rach and I set off early on our first morning for a rowing boat tour of the lake, the quantity and variety of birds was impressive, especially the raptors which are such a rarity in the UK. The water was shrouded in mist and lining the rocky lake shore were some truly ... read more

I made my way back to D&D because it was on the way and because its a good place to camp. Its relatively cool here because its up in elevation so thats a big plus and I wanted to have a better look around the area than I did the last time. I ended up spending two days here due to indecision and indistinct warnings that travel might be difficult due to the Easter (Semana Santa) holday. I picked up a Norwegian backpacker with a heavy British accent who was on his way back to the D&D where he was rooming with another American. They were working out the logistics of how to get to Pulhapanzak Falls when I happened along with a car so that problem was solved. It was a impressive waterfall and a ... read more
