The Belizean countryside is nothing like Belize City. Safe, relaxed, mellow and incredibly easy to strike up casual conversations. The hawkers, street sellers, bus drivers, attendants and country folk are polite, accepting and easily approachable for directions or advice. We witnessed this bussing it south on the Hummingbird Highway from Belize City to the small fishing town of Placencia. Along the way I was approached by the country's Softball Sports Commissioner. He not only informed us of the 2012 World Softball Tournament whereby Belize is the host country , but how to get to Placencia quicker and cheaper. We followed his advice, ending up in the village of Independence, catching a ride on a skiff named the Hokey Pokey, skirting mangrove shores until a sundown arrival at Placencia. Placencia is the typical sleepy Caribbean seaside village. ... read more

Having been away for three months Rachel decided it was high time she came to check up on me & for the past two weeks we have been travelling through Honduras together. After a quick exit from San Pedro Sula (the lonely planet lists leaving SPS as one of the highlights of the country) we headed inland to the vast Lago de Yojoa. The lake is famed for it's bird life and is reputed to have around 440 different species, binoculars at the ready Rach and I set off early on our first morning for a rowing boat tour of the lake, the quantity and variety of birds was impressive, especially the raptors which are such a rarity in the UK. The water was shrouded in mist and lining the rocky lake shore were some truly ... read more

I made my way back to D&D because it was on the way and because its a good place to camp. Its relatively cool here because its up in elevation so thats a big plus and I wanted to have a better look around the area than I did the last time. I ended up spending two days here due to indecision and indistinct warnings that travel might be difficult due to the Easter (Semana Santa) holday. I picked up a Norwegian backpacker with a heavy British accent who was on his way back to the D&D where he was rooming with another American. They were working out the logistics of how to get to Pulhapanzak Falls when I happened along with a car so that problem was solved. It was a impressive waterfall and a ... read more

After the expedition to Aguas Calientes, Marco and I had agreed to meet for a couple of drinks and to discuss the possibility of traveling together to La Ceiba where he wanted to do some kayaking. He brought with him an English girl who had checked into his accomodation who was eager to join him on an expedition into La Moskita which is a vast roadless area along the Carribean cost in Eastern Honduras and Northwestern Nicaragua. I agreed that this could be possible if she didn't mind be crammed into the back of the Scion so now there were three. I amended the plan by suggesting that we should detour to Lake Yajoa and stay one night there before pressing on to La Ceiba. Thus agreed we drove about 4 hours to an interesting expat ... read more

Up with the sun today (actually, I woke up at 3 am & couldn't sleep anymore so I read for a couple hours until it seemed reasonable to wake Geoff up) to go on a hike through the Parque Eco-Arqueologico Los Naranjos which is just a few blocks from us. (I think I'm sleeping too much...). I woke up so early because there was an animal on the metal roof doing hot laps back & forth. So ridiculously loud. Back & forth & back & forth, stop to scratch at something in the roof, back & forth. Too much for me. We've become, of all things, fans of bird watching! The birds here are just soooo bright & colorful & their calls are so entertaining. Although we don't know any of the species' names & we ... read more

Twin beds aren't so bad. Geoff snuggled with me for a bit & then retreated to his own bed. Not quite as spacious as our king size at home. For breakfast we had some coffee & some freshly baked muffins at the pastry shop below us. I am going to miss pastry shops at every turn. Yum. We then spent the next hour running back & forth around town looking for an internet store (first hotel or hostel without wifi in awhile) to take care of our deposit for our island rental. We're renting an island in the Bay Islands all to ourselves for 2 nights. They were all booked up but had a cancellation so we snatched it. But, we have to put a deposit into a bank account & we found out her account ... read more

September 15th is Honduras' Independence Day. This year it fell on a Wednesday. Teacher's Day fell on the Friday (17th) so we had 3 days off from school plus a weekend, to make it a 5 day mini-vacation - our first real break from school. Last year at this time, our school had closed down for H1N1 scares and we had almost 2 weeks to take off to Nicaragua. This year, Walt and I decided to stay a little closer to home. The plan was to drive my car to Comayagua, spend a night or two there, then drive on to Lago Yojoa and visit Pulhapanzak, as Walter had never been. The only problem with this plan was that the Monday before we were supposed to leave, I took my car in for repairs, as the ... read more

On the 15th, Ashley and I started our trip through Honduras and Guatemala. Stayed one night in Tegucigalpa (capital of Honduras) and visited two churches the next morning - really nice plaza and walking areas in the center. Then we took a bus to Lago de Yojoa. Rented a row boat for equivalent of about $3 and managed to row ourselves down the canal to the lake. We each tried rowing on our own but decided it would be much more efficient if we each just rowed one oar together. When we got to the lake, jumped in - really refreshing despite the algae everywhere. On the way back down the canal rowing in our swimsuits, a local family was in a boat coming the other way. We said good morning and the man told us ... read more

In our Lonely Planet guide, Central America on a Shoestring, there was a great listing for a microbrewery/hotel near Lago de Yojoa, a picturesque lake in central Honduras. We got a lift from the Jungle River Lodge at 7 am in the morning of Oct. 9th to La Ceiba, and made our way to the D&D Bed & Breakfast and Microbrewery via San Pedro Sula. By the time we were dropped off by the chicken bus in front of the road to D&D, it had started to rain and the sky was getting darker. D&D was closed. Argh! Unfortunately we didn't have a backup plan. The brewery was 5 km away from the nearest town and the only other hotel in the area, which resided next door to the brewery, was also closed. This was the ... read more

Once we arrived at the destination we had tried to get to a day before, we were actually glad that we got stuck in Tegucigalpa because of the curfew. D&D Brewery is a fair bit out of the way. However, the owner is from Oregon and Justin was intrigued by a microbrewery in the Honduran countryside. We ended up taking a taxi there for a couple bucks. Once we got there, we found out that "we don't know where the owner is or when he is coming back...and we are out of beer." Followed up by receptions recommendation that we stay somewhere else. They said cortijo was nice. So we went down to Cartijo and got dorm beds for $10 each. More than we thought the area should cost, especially since our private room in the ... read more
