When I left for this trip, over a month ago, I really had no plans of what I was going to do when I got down here. I wanted to be free. I wanted to go with the flow and not be tied to a schedule. All I knew was that I had to be back in Managua by the end of August. However, for some reason it never crossed my mind that I would be exploring the ruins of ancient Mayan civilazations. Nice beaches, sure. Dense forest, of corse. But to see these grand temples built over two thousand years ago, that is something I hadn´t planned on. To view these amazing structures and imagine what it must have been like is truly incredible. Standing under the great temples built by Mayan kings thousands of ... read more

Hello Everyone!! I´m here!!!! After no more than two hour´s wait in Houston, I arrived the 24th in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, about 11pm local time. A nice man told me they only allowed people to hold signs if they had a ´contact´in the airport, and sure enough, someone had a contact because there was someone holding a sign. It read "Anna Hershy, Los Pinos". The family I stayed with is related to Zonia, the lady I am living with. Because it is the rainy season, we stayed in San Pedro Sula until Sunday, until the roads had dried out a bit. Sunday was a big treat for me, we went to Puerto Cortes and spent a day by the ocean. We went to a private beach, you had to buy the food and drink to ... read more

Copan Ruinas - Much More to Maya Liking, by George Having survived La Moskitia we were determined to spend the next few days well fed and watered. With this as our mission, Copan Ruinas was an excellent choice of location. A charming town nestled in the hills on the Guatamalan border, we enjoyed cocktails, frappuccinos, fresh fruit, brownies, burgers and plenty more besides. Our visit to the ruins, at the far edge of the Mayan empire, was very pleasant. The anticipated crowds failed to materialise, the surroundings were picturesque and the architecture different from any ruins we'd seen before. For the main event at Tikal I'm keen to get a guide, but this was a great starter for ten. Due to massive flooding (ironically) there was no water supply to the town, so after a good ... read more

Me and Ray headed to Copan yesterday, we managed to get a private shuttle for $5 which was nice, no more hitch hiking for the time being. Copan seemed to be bigger than I first imagined it to be and definately a cowboy looking place with everyone wearing the hat, trousers/jeans with big buckles, cobbled streets etc. We are staying in a nice Hotel for $4 a night each which Im considering to be a good deal. Im considering staying here for a couple more nights as it has a nice laid back feel to it and Im not sure where I want to go from here. Especially with the no bus issue Im tempted to head straight into Guatamala and see some sights there before heading back to Honduras via Belize on the boat to ... read more

a few more pics...since i've got a bit of time to kill this afternoon. Actually it's been a lovely week! I had been really concerned about finding something to do during my last couple weeks in Copán. I was thinking working in a school, the colegio...SOMETHING. It's that I didn't want to waste this time. But finally, with the help of a friend, I was able to stop, take a breath and just say, "OK, I don't want to be stressed. I want to enjoy this time, and the relationships I've made." It's been so nice to rest a bit, meet a friend in Santa Rita for lunch, visit with another friend over a hot chocolate, have a friend help me improve some Spanish details, start studying German (!), watch a movie with my host family, ... read more

This past weekend a church in Copán put on a youth "congreso". It was a Friday night and all day Saturday, with guest speakers, pastors from other cities in Honduras, a famous singer gave a concert, a vocalist from Guatemala, and several dramas from the youth in the church. AMAZING. Absolutely incredible. Such LIFE, Passion...It was an unbelievable blessing for me. God is going to use this church, these youth, to change Copán to do something amazing here!! The music, messages and dramas really, really spoke to me. Friday night I was so full of JOY!!! I walked home with a huge smile on my face...just because I knew God is good and he's given me a smile!! Friday night was SO GOOD! Some of the things that stuck with me... Well, it took me long enough, but I finally visited the Public School in Copán. Juan Ramon Cueva. I went with my hermanita (little sister) Saraí. She's in the 5th grade, so next year she'll finish the 6th and graduate from la escuela (hopfully colegio will follow after that). Anyway, we got up around 6ish, had a breakfast of pinol (like coffee, but made with roasted corn...super good) and pan (a hard roll or cookie we dip in the pinol). Then a bit after 6:30 we headed off, walking the 15 minutes to the school close to the center of town. Saraí has about 35 compeñeros (classmates). They begin the day at 7am by reciting a prayer and part of the national anthem, then some share their writing assignment homework from the day before. After a ... read more

OK....so you know things have fallen into a "slump" when you haven't updated your travel blog for over a month. Wow. Time flies...when not a lot is happening. Just kidding. My sister and friend just came to visit, so I've got lots to update about our adventures together. This post, however, is from a couple months ago. It's a letter I wrote for the "Lawton Free Reader", a publication in my hometown. I figured I'd dig up an old stone and try and kill another bird with it! My birthday seems ages ago...but it was good memories!! Here's to getting some actualy up-to-date updates written. PS HAPPY 4th OF JULY!!! I really miss the holidays!!! Hola de Honduras!! I finally did it!! After nearly a year and a half in Copán and hearing all about the Canapy Tour, and how I "have to do it before leaving Copán!!"...Angel and I took the plunge. For her last day in Copán, we waited for the Canopy Tour pick up truck and crew to pick us up at our house. I knew it was going to be a classy time when they were willing to pick us up wherever...even at my house way up in San Pedrito Abajo. Thankfully one of the crew guys lives just up the road from me, is friends with my neighbors and knew exactly where we were at. We bumped along in the back of the pickup, chatting with a girl from New York that had been studying in Cosa Rica and ... read more
