I woke to sparkling sunlight, so after fully coating myself in sunscreen and bug spray I headed to the pool. Somehow the clouds were timed with my walk and arrived precisely the same time I did. Bummer. Then it poured. And poured. More rain than even my first day. I took pictures of the rain. I took a video of the rain. I stood outside in the rain. I have never heard rain pound down out of the sky like this ever before. All of my papers are damp. All my book covers are curling. And my swimsuit from Friday is still soaking wet. Worked nicely for an afternoon siesta though. I still enjoyed the day nibbling on delicious Honduran baledas and chatting with Richard the owner here (his thoughts on Honduran child rearing and US ... read more
Post-monsoon

Today I got to see the sun! (For more than 5 minutes at a time.) And realized the hotel is not a Stephen King novel where everyone has been enveloped into the mist. I developed a routine based on the Honduran weather…sun=pool, hazy=hike, rain=read or workout. Nothing occurs for any set amount of time. All are completely contingent upon the weather. I still have yet to use much Spanish, as most of the staff here speaks English. Today I told the housekeeping woman “no gracias” when I think she asked me if I needed more towels. I do not. However I will need toilet paper soon and that is not a word I practiced in Spanish. I will perhaps try, “papier pour el bano”. And I hope that no hand gestures will be involved. While Ryan enjoys the hustle and bustle of Antigua, I am enjoying the quiet and solitude in the Honduran jungle. Earlier today I suspected the hotel had no other guests and that maybe the staff had evaporated in to the mist as well. Still, not fearing for my life, or how I would obtain clean towles, I explored the grounds and hiked along the river. Both are extremely tranquil and gorgegous. Now the pool area is lively (there are other guests!), and the restaurant appears to be functioning. If I spend too much time on the internet or go to too many websites, I will shut the service down for 24 hours - yikes!... read more

I arrived safely at Villas Pico Bonito and am covered in a thick layer of DEET. Something completely bizarre just made a sound in the crook of my roof, or is maybe just ON the roof. Could’ve been a bird. Or maybe a small monkey. Or maybe a giant cicada. All quite entertaining and awesome. Especially after sitting next to a Honduran witch doctor on the flight here. He can cure AIDS. And traveled with Michael Jackson for most of 2004. He invited me to his “wellness center”. With the Cangrejal river roaring by, I will try to get some sleep although I would be much more relaxed with more reliable interenet access. I'll post some photos tomorrow once I'm settled in. ... read more

After Cuba, I've had a blast revisiting Panama & Honduras. I went to Panama after Cuba to see places I missed the first time. I met up with a Swedish guy I met in Guatemala in March and we traveled together to David (Panama 2nd largest city), Playa Las Lajas and Santa Catalina. There is nothing in David but the hostel we stayed at was awesome -Hostal Bambú, very laid back staff and it had a swimming pool. In Playa Las Lajas, really there is nothing much to do here expect chill & surf and same goes for Santa Catalina expect it has better wave for surfing -both places are beautiful. Actually we only went to Santa Catalina because we wanted to visit the Isla de Coiba (It used to house the most dangerous prisoners & ... read more

On Saturday, John and Johnette visited Carmen’s home - see our last blog - and met Carmen’s parents Valentine and Maria and several of their other children. They have 13. One of Carmen’s fellow students, Edwardo, met them and served as an interpreter for the day. John and Johnette had a pleasant visit and got an interesting glimpse into home life here in El Salvador. They took lots of pictures which they shared with us As I mentioned in our previous blog, Hotel El Pacifico has an on site water park. It was very busy all weekend with families renting rooms for half and full days to entertain their extended families and children. We enjoyed lots of great people watching there and on the beach where hundreds of locals gathered to enjoy the sun, surf and ... read more

Pastelerias are bakeries specializing in decorative cakes. This photo was taken in the very colorful village of Citala, El Salvador near the Honduran border.
Not sure what the significance of the painted light posts was but we thot they were attractive.

The Igbo say the place where one wakes up is home. Eyes flipped open to dawn. “My last day” I said to no one. Somehow odd to know the way to school finally only to use this knowledge once. Diagonal across the park, turn right, along the creek, past sheep foraging in the garbage. I passed the old cigar factory, one of the only two factories in the town. Three hombres still sat under the jacaranda tree with "Huelga" placards, (“on strike”). The factory had closed down several months before and they were protesting non-payment of wages. The lucky ones had received half their wages, all paid in cigars. These men simply had nothing better to do and it sort of looked like work. It was overcast, in the sixties, what the gringos called a beautiful ... read more

A rainy Monday afternoon Nothing to do but go to the mall. Avatar had opened a few days before. Good ol’ American high tech escapism. We were tempted, but too tired, to wait for the 3D showing three hours later. We felt like tired, shabby avatars ourselves. Just enough time for American mall junk food. What a treat! I figured I could order while Maureen looked for sushi. Or so I thought. Pointing, in flawless high school Spanish I ordered menu item #2, a double cheese burger. “Uno?” the young lady at the counter asked. “Uhh, si, uno de numero dos,” I replied. “Dos?” “Uhhh, si, numero dos, doble.” She paused, looking at me, like I wasn’t done, so I added, for clarity, “Hamburguesa con queso.” “You want two?” “Uhhhhh….” We looked at each other doubtfully. ... read more
