The bus from La Ceiba that should've been 3 hours took a little over that before it arrived at Central America's largest bus terminal. A quick taxi ride and we were downtown. Hotel Terazza seemed a good choice by the LP and so I checked in. At HNL 250 ($13) the room was small but with a bathroom and a window. I was a little anxious of going out as I had read in the Bay Islands magazine that apparently San Pedro Sula was the worlds 3rd most dangerous city... On the internet however it is not listed as such, although it has one of the highest murder rates in Latin America. I took only a short stroll of a block around the hotel ending up at a Chinese restaurant where I had dinner. The next ... read more

We woke up to a beautiful, clear, sunny, blue sky day!! Yippee!! We rounded up Peter & headed to Garifuna Tours to go see Punta Sal. We ran into Mike & Liz ordering food & they were heading to the shop too. I had my new favorite breakfast this morning. Baleadas (not sure of spelling). They took flour tortilla dough, hand patted the tortilla, cooked it in front of me & filled it with beans, scrambled eggs, shredded cheese, seasoned chicken & a huge slice of avocado. All for the price of $1. I plan to live off these for the rest of my time in Honduras. So good. At the tour office, we were told the tour was sold out. First the girl who worked there they would get another boat if one more person ... read more

Oh the Honchos (roosters for those of you who haven't been following along). They never stop their doodling. Sadly, it's a little bit overcast & drizzly this morning. We are really looking forward to the sun. It's been awhile it seems. Breakfast on the restaurant deck overlooking the bay was really nice though. Working on our plans for the Bay Islands. Where to stay, where to dive, how to get there, etc, etc. It's so fun to plan the next steps. We don't usually have to plan this much but with the diving & the fact that the Islands are the most touristy place we will have been in Honduras, we have to actually make reservations! What an unusual concept. After breakfast we headed into town & walked along the beach. The beach goes on forever ... read more

The rain was incessant last night. Non stop. I imagined a flood outside. Perfect day for a bus ride out of town! We had a breakfast burrito & met Peter (from Vancouver, BC) & Alex (SF, Ca.) & we all swapped insight into our travels. Peter just came from Nicaragua so it's always great to get insight into where to stay, what fun stuff they did & then we can share our insight as well. Love the traveler community. We told Peter to meet us at our hotel in Tela the following day & we packed up & got ready to head out. Settled up our bill ($120 for 2 nights & 3 days worth of good food, good beer & good fun) & headed out. Thankfully the rain stopped for the time being & we ... read more

The next day, after our shopping extravaganza we just spent a lazy day in La Ceiba. We walked to the opposite end of town that we had been in the previous day. We went all the way to the beach... about 30 mins walk through the centre of town and along to the nightclub district, but of course nothing was open except a few small shops. We had brought our salami sandwiches with us for lunch and bought some beers at a little comedor and ate. At one point a big truck pulled up next to the shop and it was full of gas cylinders, not sure if they were full or empty, im assuming full because a guy was sitting on top with a giant shotgun! not the safest idea in the world, one accident ... read more

following on from the last entry... Next morning we headed to the docks at 8am to get our passport stamped and got on the 9.30am boat to Puerto Barrios in Guatemala. it cost us $37.50Bz to exit Belize which was annoying but good as we had to get rid of our belize dollars anyway, we just hadnt wanted to spend it! My last $1.15 of coins i spent on chips onthe exit ramp lol. The boat took about 1hr 45min but it was a beautiful day with no wind. it was only a small motor boat but they packed us in, about 20ppl with all our luggage. When we arrived we went and got our entry stamp to guatemala and to change the rest of our belize notes at the bank and noone would change them. ... read more

La Ceiba Friday 13th August It’s another 6 a.m. start and a long day’s travelling ahead as we head towards La Ceiba in Honduras. The first stage is a boat we’ve hired to take us from Livingston to Puerto Barrios. Gemma seems worried that we may get delayed somewhere along the way and is immediately concerned when the first thing our driver does is divert to get fuel. There’s one more stop to pick up another passenger with this morning’s catch and then our boat is speeding towards Puerto Barrios. Everything is running smoothly as at Puerto Barrios a minibus is waiting to take us to Honduras. We reach the border between Guatemala and Honduras within 40 minutes and again there are no real delays in getting across. There does seem to be an unusually large ... read more

Hola amigos! First time to Central America. No speak Spanish. Two African American women willing to go outside of the box to explore a place called Honduras for two weeks! Excitement, tension and nervousness all run through our minds as we wonder what will become of our upcoming adventure. Stay tuned as the events of our travels unfold! My mother and I have finally arrived in San Pedro, Honduras tonight after a long day of traveling, including a 5 hour layover in San Salvador, El Salvador! We took Taca Airlines and everyone seemed very pleasant and friendly! Eventhough we ended up not being able to sit together, we both got Exit Row seats, not bad! We both immediately befriended the gentlemen sitting next to us on the plane from Washington D.C to El Salvador. One ... read more

Up at 5am to catch a 7am ferry. The ferry system here isn’t completely disorganized, it is just chaotic. I decided to try to minimize the chaos by going at 7am on a Sunday. That has to been the best time to go, right? (As Monday at 9:30am was packed.) Turns out, Monday was not packed. Today was packed. Like what Ellis Island must’ve been like. Or a mosh pit. I thought, “what sort of insane person would take a 7am ferry on a Sunday?” ALL of the insane people, apparently. The term “Sunday driver” takes on a whole new meaning when you pack a ferry full of ‘em. The trip made Villa Helen’s all the more welcoming, as it is tranquil, secluded, and mildly eccentric. On the ride here, through La Ceiba, brightly colored laundry ... read more
