Hi everyone, hope you are all doing well. I'm fine, not too much going on. I saw the new James Bond movie on Saturday night, it was really good if you have a chance to see it. Then we came back home and had some friends over for a little get together, it was really nice. Anyway, attached are some pictures of my house if you are interested.... read more

Not that they stole anything from me, but man, they wanted to! Last weekend I went to Manuel Antonio, which is the name of a beach and a national park on the Pacific side of this little country I've decided to call home for 12 weeks. The bus ride was... interesting, to say the least, because it was Halloween and they had decided to rent us fun slasher movies! Hoo-frickin-ray. On top of the fact that I had seen Blindness (Ceguera, en espanol), which was fabulous but creepy and unsettling, I was ready for rays of happiness and light. The happiness came in the form of Juno, but the light was quite nonexistent for our first hour or so at our hotel- power was off in the whole city! Power outages during thunderstorms here are quite ... read more

Sorry I haven't updated in WAY too long, but life just gets crazy sometimes and BAM suddenly I'm two weekends behind. So, two weekends ago was a long weekend. Our Spanish finals were on Friday morning and then we were free, totally free, until Tuesday at 8. We had a ridiculous girls day on Friday and hung out with some Ticos and my Venezuelan and Guatemalan friends. Saturday morning, Kate and I went to HiperMas (loosely translated as SuperMore, which is a Wal-Mart equivalent. Other than some necessities, I bought a National Geographic in Spanish that I have slowly, but successfully, been reading. How random is this? John McCain's daughter's favorite band is a Costa Rican group called LePop, and one of the band members is my friend Kali's Tico Brother! They were having a release ... read more

Most of my blogs, thus far, have consisted of fun weekend trips and "the vacationer's Costa Rica." But I'm living here. I've been here for almost a month, and I think I've adapted to the culture fairly well, so here are some cultural subtleties and other fun facts about my day to day life. Funny Rules: It's rude to put your hands in your lap at the table while eating. Doors to every room in the house (except the courtyard... hmm... weird) are kept closed. Never walk around barefoot; always wear flip flops or slippers in the house. In my house: The definitions of the inside and outside of buildings here are very fluid. We have a courtyard which I would consider to be a yard, and therefore outside of the house, but the door to ... read more

So this last weekend ISA was supposed to go to Manuel Antonio, but it had been raining for days all over the country, particularly on the Pacific side, so our trip got scratched. However, lots of us were set on hitting the beach that weekend, so under our own gumption and colones we headed to Puerto Viejo, on the Caribbean side of things. We left on a bus at 4 and finally got to PV around 9:30, in search of a hostel called Rockin' J's, which is fairly famous as far as hostels in Costa Rica are concerned. It contains a restaurant/bar, and 3 types of sleeping accommodations: actual rooms, tents, or open air hammocks. We opted for tents due to a general paranoia of contracting dengue, but most of our tents didn't zip anyway and ... read more

This weekend we basically did as much as was humanly possible in 36 hours, and it was FABULOUS. After turning my alarm off in my sleep at 5:00, and waking up in a panic at 5:33, my roommate and I still managed to walk out of the house at quarter to 6, and get to the ISA office in plenty of time. Eventually, everyone made it and we set off for a 4 hour bus ride/nap, which was interrupted only by a brief stop at a garden and breakfast, which I was more than happy to eat. The hot chocolate at the restaurant where we stopped is second only to a coffee shop in Atlanta, GA, near the Fox Theatre. I think I described it once as drinking melted Godiva chocolates. OH! and that place where ... read more

Hey everyone, This will be our last blog from Costa Rica. When next we write it will be from Vietnam, somewhere. Still not decided on whether we start in the north and work our way south or catch a train for Ho Chi Minh City and see the south and Cambodia first then head back north. I´d like to take the slow boat to Hong Kong from Halong Bay if possible at the end of the stay. But we´ll let you know anyway. Costa Rica is a small gem of a country. We arrived carrying left over stress from our lives in Oz but it did not take long for us to get in the groove of the Ticos and relax. Nothing has gone wrong for us. We have been very lucky. The people are lovely ... read more

Hello, world, I played in the rainforest last weekend. Go on, be jealous. So the ISA students went to Monteverde. After a 6 hour long bus ride that should have been 4 over rushing, chocolate covered rivers in a gigantic bus, we finally made it. We ate dinner and just hung out around the hotel that night, dancing a little at the in-hotel bar, and Pinto DJEd. Did you know that Yellow Tail wine is sold in Costa Rica? Saturday was a busy busy day. Saturday morning, we went on a ziplining canopy tour! I swung on a Tarzan swing and they have two HUGE lines that just go out over a valley... it was beautiful, and so green! Next, I went on a horseback riding tour, which was OK. It took us up to a ... read more

So, first of all, I'm headed to Monteverde tomorrow, for the weekend, and I'm super excited. Check in for that blog on Monday-ish. Classes are awesome so far. I'm taking Intermediate 1 Spanish, which is just about perfect, and involves a lot of talking, which is what I need to practice. I'm also taking Tropical Ecology, with a fun young male profesor, and the class will include Field Trips to Tortuguero and Santa Rosa, FOR FREE to do cool things like play with sea turtles. YAY. Environmental Impact and Social Development promises to be interesting, the profesora has a Masters in Wildlife Management and a Ph.D. in Sustainable Resources, and we have a couple trips for that class too, which promise to be fascinating if a little depressing. Finally, the segway to the title, and the ... read more

Hello everyone, how's it going? I'm doing well, dying to get out of San Jose and see the rest of the country. I am going to La Paz Waterfall gardens with a tour group on Sunday (as that is my only day off this week). It leaves at 10 and I get back around 5:30, it includes transportation, lunch, entrance to the waterfalls, a butterfly garden and a coffee plantation. I'm really excited. I was hoping to do it tomorrow, but I have a mandatory meeting tomorrow at 1. Every month we get a new schedule, so I will have different classes starting next week. This is not new to the students, but the class that I had this morning were so sweet to me, they told me how much they liked my classes, that I ... read more
