In the morning we headed out to do the Sky Trek zip-line, which is one of the popular activities here in Costa Rica. A zipline is a series of cables high in the jungle that you slide down in a harness attached to a pulley (also known as a flying fox). The cables go through and above the canopy of the cloud forest and you fly past the trees at high speed. This was a lot of fun. The longest cable was over 700m long - quite impressive. After that we did the Sky Walk, which is a hike through a series of suspension bridges that go about the cloud forest. This was about the time that it starting heavily raining in true tropical style. By now we had learned that you don´t go anywhere without ... read more

Once again it was time to move on, and we decided to take the "jeep-boat-jeep" option to get to Santa Elena. The trip across Lake Arenal in the boat was the most relaxing and pleasant part of the trip. It turned out (not too suprisingly) that this was actually a minivan-boat-minivan trip, and not quite as exciting as doing a 4x4 road trip, although the road to Santa Elena were among the roughest we had seen. When we got to Santa Elena we were caked in a layer of dust. We had lunch in the very cool Tree House Cafe in Santa Elena, which is a cafe built around a large tree, with branches going right past tables. A very cool and innovative idea. Trish took some timeout to relax while I headed out to see ... read more

So...Hola!! I'm doing great still, everything is perfect. I'm up in Santa Elena right now and it's really, really beautiful here. It is such a change from the coast, but I do miss the beach. It's almost cold here at night time, but it's still pretty hot during the day. Today we went to the Monteverde Cloud Forest and did the zip lines and sky walk tours. It was so much fun. There was also this crazy Tarzan swing which was awesome. They just chuck you off the platform and you fly out over the canopy on this big bungy swing, it was crazy. I bought a disposable camera so I won't get to see those pics for a while, but the girls I'm with now are just going to send me the photos from today ... read more

En route to my journeys on the South American continent I stopped in Costa Rica. I didn´t get a travel guide because I was only going to be here for a week. So I got off the plane and realized that I had no idea what I was doing. Also I hadn´t slept on the overnight flight. I got to the baggage pickup, and saw a cash machine, so I tried to take out some money. Not knowing the exchange rate I took what seemed like a big amount: ONE THOUSAND COLONES. It turned out to be less than five dollars. I walked outside and took a cab to a shady industrial part of San Jose. So I could sell the eleven kilos of cocaina I had with me, and to catch the 11:30 bus to ... read more

Hello all, me again! Andrew is addicted to his book. Well, you guessed it, we saw lava which was the most amazing thing ever. We had chatted to other travellers who saw either nothing or an "orange glow" at Volcan Arenal, and I had very low expectations to avoid disappointment. But we just got off the bus and saw the volcano spitting molten rocks again and again. I was surprised at how quickly they moved down the cone. Our tour leader said we were really lucky, and we have decided we are the lucky group because we keep fluking lots of cool things. Today we travelled to Monteverde, a privately owned but protected area of cloud forest. We hired a guide, and it was sensational. We saw racoons, monkeys, a vulture, hummingbirds, snakes, massive stick insects, ... read more

Okay, this was the best day so far. I´m so excited from our activities today. We started with the Selvatura bridge walk through Santa Elena Reserve. Basically, we hiked through the trees through bridges that connected one park to the other. Could have done without that one, but then we had the zipline tour. it is a definite must do here. its completely touristy, but who cares, i´m a tourist. its like repelling except there is no mountain/ face to swing off. We are dangling through the trees and really moving from one platform to another basically flying in the wind to the next platform. it was awesome. You know who, had so many negative comments about the event; i just had to ignore him. he once said, " my heart is racing because of the ... read more
