We headed north across the Arenal lake where we had the full spectacular view of the, very much still active, Arenal Volcano. The volcano erupted a couple of times while we were there and sounded like nothing more than thunder with some clouds of black smoke and rocks coming from the top but we were informed that quite often the lava will run red down the side. After trekking for 3 hours to get as close as we could to the volcano (still only one mile) we were disappointed not to see any red lava. However our local tour guide kindly offered us some (almost a litre) of the local cocktail containing the local spirit of Cicique. It tasted very much like vodka but sweeter as it was made from sugar cane. The guide informed us ... read more

Yesterday we left the Arenal Observatory Lodge after a leisurly breakfast, looking at the volcano for the last time. The road from El Costillo to Santa Elena was even more windy than the ones we have already experienced. The roads were also in much worse shape, making for a very bumpy ride, but the view more than made up for it. Most of the drive was on roads on the edge of plunging cliffs with fantastic lush vallies. The distance from our hotel to Santa Elena is about 17 km as the crow flies but took us about three hours, covering 105 km because of the windy route we had to take around Lake Arenal. Santa Elena is a great little back-packing town. It is essentially a triange made of three main roads with tour operators, ... read more

After leaving Omepete we headed straight to the border to go to Costa Rica. It took us 3hrs standing in queues in sweltering heat. It is the worst so far, even Miami was a breeze compared to this one. Costa Rica is much more developed and has a real American feel to it. The quality of things are nearly on par with home, which is reflected in the prices. Driving through to Liberia, our first stop, you could see that the standard of living is improved, some of the houses are large ranch style, not surprising considering there's a lot of cowboys here. Two nights in Liberia was more than enough, it's a great place to travel through, but apart from an interesting church we didn't really see much apart from lots of shops selling all ... read more

Rafa nunca se negaba a ... read more

We got up at our leisure again and went in to the lodge for another fantastic breakfast. Day four in a row of having the best scrambled eggs! Oh, and coffee!!! This morning, I had another special encounter. The monkeys were back and it was pretty quite in the room. I walked over to the big windows to get a little closer to our morning friends. One of the younger ones jumped onto the roof and then onto the ledge next to the window. I put my hand flat on the window and he reached out and touched the window too...right where my hand was! It was pretty cool! Mom went back to the room to get ready for the day's adventure. I stayed in the main building to send some emails and then when I ... read more

I'm going to keep it short because I need to pack, shower, and sleep before I catch my 6:30 am bus to San Jose. As people reading my facebook may have seen I'm going to try to make it to Carnival in Panama City. It starts the night of the 12th, so that's a LOT of bus in a little time. Since Quepos: I spent a night in San Jose. It was the first time I met really friendly people at the hostel I've been staying at. They have my bag so it has been convenient, but I should switch hostels. I met a woman from NYC who was heading to Santa Elena also so we took a bus together, stayed at the same hostel, and hiked in Monteverde together. I'm staying at Pension Santa Elena. ... read more

On Thursday morning we got up at our leisure which really is one of the best things about vacation...no real schedule or timetable! We had another great breakfast - no monkeys this morning though, they had eaten already! At 9:45 am we were picked up to go on our coffee plantation tour. Originally, we weren't going to do a coffee tour, but Ivonne at the Lodge recommended it and said that it was an activity well worth it. So, off we went. I climb into the mini van and the only seats left are backwards...um, this is not going to go well with my motion sickness. And of course, the paved road quickly ended and onto the gravel we went. Let's just say I was very happy to arrive at the plantation. We pulled in and ... read more

After two years of planning, Mom and I have finally arrived in Costa Rica. Since both of our birthdays are in November and we turned 60 and 30 in the same year, we decided this was our birthday celebration. Now 62 and 32, the trip is just as sweet! We took a non-stop flight out of Miami on Tuesday morning and in less than 3 hours we were here! I couldn't believe how quick the flight was. Immigration and customs was pretty uneventful. We made our way through with no problems. The airport is so small that as soon as you cleared customs, you were outside. We had arranged private transport through our hotel in Santa Elena and he was supposed to be waiting for us with a sign at the exit. Now, I'm not sure ... read more

We arrived in Santa Elena via the Jeep-Boat-Jeep tour that cost us each $20 and was TOTALLY worth it. It cut out about 3 hours from a public bus from Fortuna to Monteverde and was MUCH nicer scenary. We took one busito (van holding 10-12 people) to the Arenal lake, then took a boat 45 minutes across the lake. The view was beautiful and very relaxing. Once on shore, we caught another busito for about 1.5 hours to Santa Elena. The whole trip was about 3 hours. During the trip I met another teacher from Kingston. Her name is Lisa. She did her undergrad at Guelph and teacher's college at Queens. She's currently on Christmas vacation from her school where she teaches in Curacao! She says "why teach in Canada when you have the opportunity to ... read more

PART TRES: THE PEOPLE (MY FAVOURITE!) So the best part has been all the amazing people... Firstly it's the group. As I've said it's been such a mix mash of individuals and everyone has really grown on me! Although I'm sure I've driven most of them irritatingly nutty ;-) Philip is a true Australian is never endingly entertaining with his stories and backhand compliments (basically a compliment with heavy understones of insults under the surface if you're quick enough to grab them!) Yes I've been the brunt of many but there's no hope in even trying to work around it, so the only choice is to take it with all you got! Him and Fernando are the keen lovers of Bar Amigos - but I have a funny feeling that's just cos it offers a different ... read more
