So we have had just a wonderful Group of Volunteers at the Herrera Botanical Gardens & Conservation Project. Today I ad them doing something new, A Living Tree Art Trail - I want to make trees you can walk up into, and turn trees into pieces of art along the trails, it should get very interesting in a few years, a long term project for sure, but who cares, it is a blast to do. Going to start a little nursery in town to help support the gardens and to gaurd Don Bluas's house, a win win for us. I just posted at craiglists, should be interesting to see how fast I can get someone. So we have about 15 km in forested trails all cleared, the crew has been kicking it lately, very happy with ... read more

During my rapid ascent up through Central America, I figured I could make the time for a week in Costa Rica, and the Corcovado National Park came highly recommended by others who had travelled here. The park is on the Osa peninsula in the south of Costa Rica, and is home to reptiles, amphibians, big cats, primates and a whole lot more. There are trails throughout the park and accommodation varies from luxury lodges to tent space at the ranger stations. My journey started in Panama City at 5am, and by mid afternoon I was over the border into Costa Rica. Here, I caught a bus to Golfito where I was welcomed off the bus by a prostitute (they are the biggest industry in this small town since the close of the banana port). From here, ... read more

Last leg of the costarican experience and well...kept the best for the end! Ever wondered what it felt like to spend time in “the most biologically intense place on earth” (National Geographic)? Exploring one of the tallest rainforests in the world, hoping (not) to run into some of the most dangerous snakes, frogs & spiders the world has to offer or go diving with 4 meters + Manta Rays, sharks & schools of hundred of tropical fish…?? Mmmm… might have wanted to keep this secluded nature wonderland for myself but locals are so far well protecting the area and the fact that this remains one of the most inaccessible places in the entire country should do it! Well, in the case of the Corcovado Park & surrounding area, the journey in itself would be worth a ... read more

I decided to spend more time in Nicaragua and sacrifice the pricier Costa Rica and Panama. The bus from the Costa Rican border to San Juan (CR capital) got me into the city at the dreaded after dark slot. I tend to favour night buses as you save one night´s accomodation and get into the city... read more

Rain, rain go away, come again some other day! Well, it´s finally hit us. The unseasonable torrential downpours which other travellers have been warning us about for weeks during our travels in CR and Nica have finally hit us too. Our plan for our remaining 10 days in CR was the Osa Peninsula and Carribean Coast but torrential rain in these areas (theoretically it´s now the dry season!) has caused such severe flooding, it´s virtually impossible to travel around there. We made it down to Puerto Jimenez in the Osa Peninsula, one of the most remote and unvisited areas of CR (and supposedly one of the best!) and organised ourselves a little independent 3-day hike, bought mosquito nets, 50 bucks worth of food, the whole shebang. There was torrential rain literally all night before we were ... read more

And into the jungle we go! Corcovado Park is in the Osa Peninsula on the far southwest of Costa Rica. Not many tourists bother to go to this park as it requires a fair amount of difficult travel. This is good news for hearty explorers like us as it leaves the animals and vistas in pure form. We did take 1 pretty serious shortcut in that we took a small plane into Puerto Jimenez. This allowed us to skip an 11 hour bus ride from San Jose. We didn´t feel too bad about this cheat considering the piles of effort that is to come. This pricey specialized flight was full of well dressed locals. I wondered what sort of affairs they were involved in that brought them to this far flung town. The small plane voyage ... read more

...ya no puede caminar. Porque no tiene, porque le falta Marihuana que fumar. (I dont think this is the proper version...) So I made it to Puerto Jimenez in one piece, although travelling on my own and missing the correct bus stop... Well, I was supposed to get off in Palmar Norte, which is in the north of the Pensinsula de Osa and about 6-7 hours on the bus from San Jose. I kind of missed the announcement of my bus stop and carried on for 1.5 hours which let me to Neilly, close to the border to Panama. Mhh.. Must say, I got a bit scared but then just got on the bus to Golfito, which is on the Gulfo Dulce, pretty nice and close to Puerto Jimenez. I stayed in Golfito for 2 nights, ... read more
