Rain, rain go away, come again some other day! Well, it´s finally hit us. The unseasonable torrential downpours which other travellers have been warning us about for weeks during our travels in CR and Nica have finally hit us too. Our plan for our remaining 10 days in CR was the Osa Peninsula and Carribean Coast but torrential rain in these areas (theoretically it´s now the dry season!) has caused such severe flooding, it´s virtually impossible to travel around there. We made it down to Puerto Jimenez in the Osa Peninsula, one of the most remote and unvisited areas of CR (and supposedly one of the best!) and organised ourselves a little independent 3-day hike, bought mosquito nets, 50 bucks worth of food, the whole shebang. There was torrential rain literally all night before we were ... read more

So we are now winding down on our trip and we are spending some time chilling out on the beaches. We're still keeping busy but its now a mixture of national parks with surfing, swimming and reading on the beach for an afternoon here or there. Here are our highlights: Nicaragua We decided to spend a few days up in Nicaragua and we visited two locations - Granada and Isla Ometepe. Granada is a really small town (100,000) which still retains a Spanish colonial feeling. We spent a couple of days here hanging around and soaking up the atmosphere. Nicaragua is also refreshingly cheap after spending US prices throughout Costa Rica (and also considerably poorer). Isla de Ometepe is a small island formed by two Volcanoes (one still active). The island is shaped a bit like ... read more

Costa Rica...lush, green and very humid! It´s a country very used to tourists and knows how to charge them. In most countries, you pay to enter a national park and then enjoy it, but in some national parks here they seem to charge for each walk, waterfall and toucan sighting (ok, an exaggeration, but only slightly!). Nevertheless, we are really enjoying spending time in this beautiful country. The people are friendly and travel is easy as the tourist infrastructure is very good and most people speak English. We´ve been to three areas so far; La Fortuna and Arenal, Monteverde/Santa Elena and Rincon de la Viajar. Some of our highlights so far: *Despite the very, very wet weather in La Fortuna, which meant we were unable to see the Volcan Arenal until the day we were leaving ... read more

We have finished up in Buenos Aires (and South America) and are now in Costa Rica and Central America. It´s also about 1/2 way through our trip so we´re running out of time ... Here are the last few things we did in Argentina. Photos to follow when we get a chance to load them up A close call We had our first South American scam experience with somebody trying to steal our belongings. We were chilling in a small park having lunch on a park bench when guy #1 walked by and dropped his keys. Lisa called after the guy who kept walking and then pursued him to return the keys. Meanwhile, guy #2 grabbed our camera bag containing camera, wallet, passport which was about 50cm away from where Dave was was sitting on the ... read more

Aaahhhh....Buenos Aires! Far and away our favourite place so far, we almost wish we had dedicated our entire 11 week trip to Argentina. We're staying in the barrio (neighbourhood) of Palermo - very cool, with loads of restaurants, bars, independent shops with handmade, unique clothes and just generally a fantastic atmosphere. It is definitely a place we could live for a few years (don´t worry mums and dads - we´re still coming home...for now!). Highlights: *The food. We never thought anywhere could beat Italy for ice-cream but BA definitely cuts it and needless to say we've had it everyday since we arrived. It's so popular over here that many places even do home delivery! Steak is also high in the favourite list for both of us (and Lisa is not usually a steak fan). They're enormous, ... read more

We´re in Buenos Aires now after almost 2 weeks in Peru. A theme emerging on the trip is that we seem to be saying ... "we´re finally here". That´s because there seem to be problems with our mode of transportation almost every time we move around. I´ll elaborate below ... Arequipa and the Colca Canyon We stopped here for a couple of days to see the Colca Canyon. The canyon is over 3,400m deep which is twice the depth of the Grand Canyon - and yes, it can be seen from space. Unfotunately we didn´t have sufficient time to get to the deepest part of the canyon but instead visited a section about 1,200 deep where Condors are regularly sighted. There were hundreds of tourists but we were lucky enough to have a huge Condor fly ... read more

Hi, So we finally arrived in Bolivia after all the hassle. We flew into La Paz which is at about 3,600m and immediately noticed the effects of this - e.g. out of breath and tired after just walking up 10 stairs. We got over this pretty quickly and have now seen a bit of Bolivia, here are our highlights: La Paz * One of the few cities we have visited with an immature tourism industry so nobody hassling us and probably 90% Spanish speaking only * The local women - Choquitas - still wear their traditional clothing and weird bowler hats * We have been sleeping A LOT and getting tired easily. When we went to bed early one night we were lucky enough to catch a Sex and the City marathon on TV !?! * ... read more

We always knew it would be tough getting from Los Angeles to La Paz (thanks to Dave, we at least didn´t attempt the London to La Paz option which was Lisa´s preference!), but a slightly zombie-like mania really hit hard after 3 hours flying, 3 hours in an airport, 3 hours flying, 3 hours in an airport, 3 hours flying, 3 hours in an airport....sounds monotonous? Yes, it really is! We crossed back and forwards into different timezones with each flight so completely lost track of when we should be eating, sleeping, taking our malaria tablets etc. And then at almost the end of it all, with only 1 flight remaining from Lima to La Paz, after 20 hours of getting on and off planes and eating appalling airline and airport food (the dinner on TACA ... read more
