Nachher be... read more

*For those of you I left off the first couple blogs, sorry! I know the last blog was short and sweet. The loss of our bag and all of its contents was a definite bummer, but we decided we could not dwell on it and continued with the remainder of our honeymoon! Let the fun go on....... We didn't have a hotel reserved in Monteverde when we arrived, but we were lucky that the place we wanted to stay (Hotel Montana - thanks for the recommendation Patty!) had a room available. We had our own little suite that overlooked the 'jungle' below. One whole wall was a window, it was very nice....but loud. A combination of the birds and the toads didn't make for the soundest sleep. Our first day there we went to the cloud ... read more

Ah don have tiiiime to be lookin fer ma moooonkay! We spent just over two weeks at the Rainsong Wildlife Reserve, run by the Large Texan Mary (again, exactly Kathy Bates in Waterboy) , where I got to wash some crates, move some cacti, and some rocks, and some dirt, and some lumber, and wash some more crates. D cleaned some cages and moved even more things, and cut things with a machete (cries of ¨whar´s Daaaareek an his macheteee?¨could be heard echoing through the hills). D had a slight crush on the machete, even bringing it on a hike with us. I snuck off to play with the animals as often as possible. The anteater had to be my favourite. If you put her down, she would stand on her hind legs and open her ... read more

Into the cold mountains we go... The high hilltops are constantly in the clouds and it is wet all the time. I actually requested a second blanket, so much for my tan. The scenery was phenomenal, we drove over rolling country side and through lush green fields and rocked the best zip lines in the country! EXTREMO Zip lines has 20 mountain to mountain zips and boasts the longest zip ever, 3/4 of a mile! It also had drop rappelling and a tarzan swing that started of with 15 foot free fall, that the guys decided I should do backwards after I went tandum on the zip lines with the instructer upside down :) What a blast! We took a van-boat-van across the lake to Volcan Arenal in La Fortuna from here for our final days... ... read more

Well, our time was up in Nicaragua, and while it had been a blast it was time to head to Costa Rica... First stop was hoping to be Monteverde; we had dropped the rental car off and were now on foot without really knowing how to get there. After a long and stinking hot 4 hour wait at the border (1 on the Nica side, 3 on the Costa) we boarded a bus to Liberia hoping to find a connection there. Fortunately along the way we met an American family who were spending a year in Nicaragua and visiting Liberia for the weekend...as they were fluent in Spanish they were gracious enough to make some enquiries at the Liberia bus station and got us pointed in the right direction, and we were off to Canas... The first installment in the blog catch-up posts is our visit to Monteverde Cloud Forest. Steve's mom (Linda) arrived from California on Thursday the 6th and we drove up to Monteverde on the following Saturday morning. The 25-mile road off the highway to Monteverde is notoriously bad but they recently paved the first 8 miles so it was not too awful. The vistas are amazing as you climb upward; you can see all the way to the Pacific Ocean. After checking into our rustic but inexpensive accommodations (it was one of the first lodgings constructed by the Quakers who settled there in the 1950s), we spent our afternoon at Selvatura - a complex of canopy bridges and a huge zipline "course." Only Steve wanted to participate in the latter, so while Nancy, Linda, and the boys ... read more
One of the bridges ends straight into the forest - cool!
The largest bridge span was 550 feet across; Nancy really put her fear of heights to the test
Sam even agreed to pose for a photo

We have to go to Monteverde. When the McLeod’s visited Costa Rica some 17 years ago they never made it to the famous Costa Rican community of Monteverde because they didn’t have a 4x4. Monteverde has a unique history, climate, geography, ecology, and is very difficult to get to. Therefore people want to go there. Monteverde, means Green Mountain in English, and after spending two nights in Monteverde I wonder what kind of green the name refers to. I'm pretty sure you know it isn't the green that Puerto Viejo is known for and that what I'm talking about is dollars. The area has outstanding attractions including adventure tours like zip-lining, and nature tours and attractions such as the insect, bat, frog, serpent, night hike, horseback riding, quad, and tree planting tours...all at a cost. Since ... read more

So next stop was Monteverde. As per the last few days it rained pretty much the whole way, although it didn´t stop the views from the lake being rsather interesting. The ´jeep´part of the journey after the lake was our bumpiest trip yet. 2.5 hours of not really staying in your seat. We arrived at what we are told is the best accomodation of our trip, and it is nice. Powerfull hot showers, mmmm. The afternoon was at our leisure so some of us went to the Butterfly farm. This had far more than its name suggests starting with a variety of insects and spiders which most were disgusting, but some I found really interesting. Unfortunately due to the recent rain and wind the butterfiles were not very active but I saw some I do ... read more

Kom i gaar kveld. Vi bodde i Managua i ... read more
