Costa Rica Rocks! This is definitely our favourite so far. First stop was Monteverde, which is a little town in the middle of a cloud forest with the main focus on adventure sports. White water rafting, zip lining through the forest, Tarzan swings etc. We found a great hostel, the best we have stayed in so far, for only $6 per person per night. Nice new rooms, hot water showers, free breakfast, free internet and the loveliest owner, Ronny, who immediately made us feel like part of the family (see the photo of Jason and Daniel, Ronny's son). So off to a good start. We arrived there at about 7am after catching a 4am bus from some little town in the middle of nowhere (we failed to get all the way to Monteverde from Nicaragua the ... read more

Getting ready for the tarzan swing!

After Montezuma we made our way up the gravel road that the locals have refused paving for (to keep the tourism down) to Monteverde (Green Mountain). This place is beautiful and is just rolling hills for miles. We stayed in a farm stay which was great, yesterday we did a canopy zip wire through the forest in the cloud which was amazing followed by suspension bridges, butterfly gardens and a humming bird garden. A proper day out with nature! Photos attached are of me down the Tarzan swing!... read more

After waking up at 6am, in a 100 degree, 100% humidity room, with a mosquito net over us suffocating our lives, we had breakfast, said goodbye to Pete, and headed outside to meet our tour guides for our jeep, boat, horse, jeep trip to Monteverde. We got into the jeep and met our guide, or so we thought. He then dropped us off at the Arenal Lake, where he said adios and sent us to our boat where we met our guide, or so we thought. We then enjoyed a beautiful boat ride on the calm Arenal Lake with the Volcano towering in the background. When that was over, we finally met our ranchero. We were pretty hesitant to leave our bags on the boat because they couldn't come with us, but they assured us that ... read more

We just got back from a 2 city trip that included going to Monteverde and La Fortuna and this may have been the best trip yet. We spent a little bit of time trying to decide if we were going to go to Puerto Viejo or Monteverde-La Fortuna. Puerto Viejo would have been a very relaxing trip as it is a beach town on the Carribbean. In the end we took a chance and decided on the adventure type trip of Monteverde-La Fortuna. When we were heading back yesterday all four of us agreed that we made the right decision . . . a trip of a lifetime. We left for Monteverde at 6:30 am on Friday morning and even though it is only about 120 miles from San Jose it took 5 hours to ... read more

Yesterday we took a jeep-boat-jeep (aka cramped van-boat-another cramped van...) to Monteverde from La Fortuna. Monteverde is amazing and sooo green. We are literally in the clouds. We ate lunch in a huge tree (yup, for real, a real live tree) and then the clouds stared rolling in and it started to pour! so there we were, just eating..in a tree...in a cloud, and not even getting wet b/c of all the leaves! amazing! today we woke up early and went to the Monteverde Cloud Forest for ziplining, treetop bridge walks, and a visit to the biggest butterfly garden in Central America at 29,000 sq. feet. They were huge! and very pretty... we even had a guide who would pick them up and show us the differences. they even landed on him while we walked around. ... read more

Good Morning! I'm back, Vince is still getting ready. We had pretty much the perfect day yesterday! We had a delicious buffet breakfast here at the hotel (which is run by Germans). Then it was off for the zipline tour! Wow! It was so fun! They have a bunch of ziplines that you take above the trees, some rappelling and a tarzan swing! We have some great pictures and video! The tarzan swing was SO scary! You pretty much jump off this platform from I don't know how high, and swing across the jungle. It was definitely one of the most fun things I ever did. After that, we headed over to the Monteverde cloud forest. But I'm sorry to say we didn't see any clouds in the cloud forest (have I mentioned how beautiful ... read more

Hello All, Yes... sorry if you logged on hoping to hear more about Jenn's travels... you're stucking hearing from me again... don't tell her I hijacked her blog again. So last night we had the most authentic Costa Rican buffalo wings, complete with chicken pizza and milkshakes... I gotta tell you, when you come to Costa Rica you gotta try the buffalo wings... Yesterday morning we had autentico fruta loopas con leche.... it was muy delicioso... for your gringos out there I had fruit loops and milk... Oh yeah... we also had some really good Costa Rican (as opposed to non Costa Rican, like we really get like Nicaraguan tenderloin out here which I'm sure is not as good as Costa Rican tenderloin... which reminds me of those really tight straps I had to wear ... read more

Arrived in Monteverde and it is just packed with adventures to do. We are staying in a treehouse type hostel and are getting no sleep for building and road works buy what the heck!!!! We decided on the canopy tours through the rainforest first of all in St Elena and also did the hanging bridges tour and then did the extreme canopy tour in Monteverde the following day. Being slightly scared of heights, i was a bit nervous but St Elena was really cool....they strap you up via belts and pulleys and attach you to the zipline cord and then send you flying for ages, hundreds of feet up in the air above the rainforest, hanging by your belt from the cord...it was so cool and you get awesome views and the wind is blowing ... read more

Horseback riding ended up being a great activity for all. We chose to do the 1.5 hour tour because we felt like Grayson would get bored. Grayson did not get bored….he loved it. He really enjoyed when the horse would “run”. The guide was entertaining as well and enjoyed watching Grayson smile when he motioned for our horse to run.... read more

Papa arrived safely (after some help from Joyce…THANK YOU JOYCE). Papa’s birthday was March 24th…so we started off his visit with a belated happy birthday cake. Grayson (like he did with Mokey) wanted to “help” blow out the candles. The next morning we headed out to Monteverde cloud forest. This is an area we had not visited previously. The last hour of the drive (30 kilometers) was unpaved, rutted roads. Papa and Grayson bounced around a lot in the backseat, but they were troopers. We read there is a reason why the roads are unpaved and the area isn’t easily accessible…..they would like to keep it remote and hard to access so that it maintains a bit of its small town charm. Monteverde is an interesting little town and the history intrigued us. Monteverde was founded ... read more
