Still no decent internet connection I'm afraid. Arrive in Honduras in a couple of days so will try and get this up to date and put some photos on it too. Having a great time. Hope everyone is well. Love to all. xxxx It's 18th now and we're just sailing out of Costa Rica. Lovely place - lovely people. I’m writing again on 15 March as we are at sea today and it’s a bit cloudy so have decided to spend a little time in the cabin catching up. The crossing the line ceremony is to be a little later so will have to rush things a bit – we actually crossed the equator during the night – so are back in the Northern hemisphere. On the 11th we arrived at Callao which is the port ... read more

Hello again my friends. I departed Bocas del Toro two days ago. Joined two girls from Buenos Aires after the 25 minute water taxi and split a 45 minute cab to the border, went through immigration, walked across the bridge border crossing, and caught a one hour bus to Puerto Viejo. Walked to Rocking Js hostel and booked a private cabina, no bigger than the size of the bed. ha. Rented a bike and had some great fish tacos at a Jamaican joint in town. Then headed south down an awesome jungle road, checking out some sweet secluded beaches. Came back in time to watch Denver beat Pitt from my hostel restaurant. Had some chicken peanut sauce stir fry that still isn't settling well, though it was good. I sat at the bar talking to a ... read more

Welcome to Costa Rica

I was very pleasantly suprised when we reached Puerto Viejo as we had been recommended a hostal called Rockin J´s by our friend and the place really lived up to our expectations. The hostal is a mix of dorm rooms, camping and hammocks and is completly covered n mosaics. The tablñes and chairs all have weird random items stuck to them such as lighters, swiss knives, old books and playing cards. The hostel is literally on the beach with a really cool bonfire area ready for the guests to use. It must be the most chilled out hostel i have stayed in and the town was even more relaxed. You could instantly tell that you were on the Caribbean side of the country as there was reggae music playing all over town, the sounds of waves ... read more

After several days in Leon restocking our gear, going to see a cockfight, and touring the city; we decided it was time to leave Nicaragua. Our plan was to head straight into Panama, but once we looked at the bus schedule we saw that we could tag on a couple days in Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica without much trouble. Its a Caribbean town several miles north of the Panamanian border and we had heard good things about it. We arrived in the afternoon, and quickly found ourselves going to get Margaritas with two girls we met at the bus station. We soon found out that they are 'dancers' from New Zealand and sisters as well. Their company proved fairly entertaining. We rented some bicycles for the next couple of days, and made our way to a ... read more

So, the four of us rocked up in Puerto Viejo, Stu and Poppy with the plan to move on that day or the following morning to Tortuguero to see the turtles laying their eggs. We headed straight to world famous Rocking J´s, a hostel which looks more like a refugee camp with tents and hammocks but is right on the beach (a plus at the time...little did we know what lay ahead) and a great place to meet people. Puerto Viejo was a cute little beach town, lots of hippies hanging out on the beach...but we stayed most of our time at the hostel. We soon realised we wouldn´t be moving on any time soon while Annelies and Frank were still in town. On the Tuesday, our second day there, we finally booked our trip on ... read more

Puerto Viajo - feb 20 Recap. Went up the volcano Irazu the day before yesterday. 3400 m!! Got a little altitude sick when trying to run up a 100 m trail. Do not jump into exercise at that altitude!! lol. It was beautiful but boring. No trails to go on, etc. Just a long bus ride there and back and 20 bucks later... but i´m glad i went. Really beutiful vista. Yesterday popped onto a bus to Puerto Viajo, was suppose to stay somewhere but couldn´t get a hold of the person- some lady selling a farm on the internet?? long story, don´t ask... so we waddled around town with my 40lbs!!! grabbed a bear. got really dark. waddled around more. until we settled on a 5 dollar dorm. still there now. coming into the town ... read more

Hola! A white sand beach, Carribean music & food and fruity smoothies with umbrella straws.... Yes that was my weekend in Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica! But before I share with you my weekend travels, I do go to school the rest of the week.... Thursday & Friday I had school in the morning, On Thursday afternoon I went to Grecia to go for the afternoon. It is such a cute town with great restaurants! I like to go to my favorite café called Café Delicias for coffee & pastries or cake, like the double chocolate or German chocolate. It’s a great way to enjoy an afternoon! On Wednesday night, Lauren & I decided to try a ‘Spinning Class,’ on stationary bikes at a gym in a nearby town. It’s hard enough sometimes taking a class in ... read more

We have been in a little town right now called Puerto Viejo for 3 nights, and its really laid back and fun. Everyone here is from Jamaica. Im extremely tempted to get dreads, but Ido and Jen are not letting me!! There are also a lot of kittens in this town...lucky for me. We travelled to Cahuita today with Ido and Ori, another boy who grew up in the States but is now from Israel. Cahuita is a national park along a really nice beach were we walked in the jungle, saw an igauna, a HUGE poisonous spider, an anteater, and got attacked by enormous army ants. It was actually quite terrifying, they cling to your skin and try to crawl up your legs. My feet still hurt from being bitten. But the ocean was sooo ... read more

The heavens have still not chosen to close so we spent the day yesterday avoiding puddles as we walked round the area looking at knick knacks and eating of course. In the afternoon we got chatting to 'J' himself who told us how all his friends thought he was mad when he came down to Costa Rica and basically bought a patch of swamp to build a hammock hotel on. He had to cart truck loads of dirt to level the ground, and then just began building. As we had suspected the "interior design" has been a group effort from all previous guests, and to leave our mark on the place Sophie, Emma and I made our own mosaic circles. Bad connections mean once more the photos will have to wait. I made a demonic monkey, ... read more
