Ranas! Thats how you say frog in spanish. And as I am doing my Independent Research Project on Strawberry Poison Dart Frogs, I thought it would be appropriate. Don't worry, they aren't toxic to humans. However, apparently if you put them in your mouth it can cause hallucinations. We haven't decided if we're going to try yet. It could be an interesting addition to our research..... :) So the project has pretty much been taking up the last few days here. It took a while to form groups and agree on a topic. I am working with three other students. We are researching the difference in escape behavior between male and female frogs. So basically this entails chasing teeny tiny frogs through the forest for a few hours every day. Well its a little more than ... read more

Yesterday we visited the Dole banana plantation. Our guide was Carlos. His job title is Public Relations manager or something in that area, but I would consider him an entertainer. He kind of reminded me of the guy at Disneyland who pulled Hailey out of the crowd to come on stage (haha). His main objective was to put on a show for us gringos, however he was surprisingly knowledgeable as well. Apparently he got a master’s degree at Texas Tech for agricultural economics. He also does marketing research for the company. Our tour was informative to some extent. Carlos had obviously done it many times before, and it was clearly rehearsed. He catered to our group specifically, knowing we were studying biology and concerned about the environment. He also was very articulate in the way he ... read more

... read more

We arrived safely in Costa Rica on Sunday afternoon without experiencing any serious travel problems. Meggy, a CPI staff member along with a CPI driver, picked us up at the airport and drove us directly to the school. After bringing our luggage inside (it looked like it was about to rain), they took us to a room where we took the placement test. There wasn't any time to get nervous about it, since it was first on the agenda! We took turns going for the speaking interview section of the placement test and getting our pictures taken for ID cards. After everyone was finished, we played a little game of "telephone" in Spanish. The Spanish phrase was close but with one hugely important difference by the time it traveled the whole way around the circle. Meggy ... read more

Hello! Its been a couple of days but I haven't been avoiding you for no reason! This past week, my group went to Sarapiqui which is a city in the northern more Caribean side of the province Heredia. The trip was about two or two and half hours and we ended up at Selva Verde (Green Forest) Lodge. But wait, before we got there we went on this tour of a pineapple farm which grows really well in that area because of the climate. I would never have thought it was would be very interesting to be honest but it was actually really cool and so beautiful! These people contorl the growth of the oineapple with this speacial gas but its all natural and organic. UM and it is the best pineapple i have ever tasted!! ... read more

So I'm in La Selva for a few days helping out some Oxy students with their research. I'm having a lot of fun because a close friend from my last semester is also here. Basically I have been following Adrienne around while she does her research and this morning I went to the river with Jime and Miguel to help them catch fish for Jime's project. Miguel is a friend of Jime's from school who is helping her out this weekend too. Tomorrow we are both leaving for San Jose early so we are going to take the same bus. My Spanish has been improving over this month. Its at the point where if I spend all day working in Spanish I think in Spanish first. Its hard though because I can understand slow, well-pronounced Spanish ... read more

Visit One: Monday of this week. This is my last week here, and Gerardo asked his friend Rudolpho to take us on a tour for free. The only way they could do it was on his day off, so we thanked him repeatedly once we realized that that was the situation. We saw the labs and library, etc. and only a few minutes in the forest. I wanted to go back for a proper 3 hour tour of the rainforest. Today, I went. Post more pix later, have to dash again. Tomorrow is my last day. I asked to please not go out as planned, but have choc. cake at lunch and NO SPEECHES. That way everyone can have some and not cost much. Off to Minerva's. I am STARVING after hiking 3 hours in the ... read more

First, hello out there to my fellow volunteers Leah and Heidi, (unfortunately for them, it's an accident of birth) , NOT Canadians, who have been plagued with curiosity about what I was putting in my blog. By the way, I'm glad you have such appreciation for nuance and subtlety in language use, including the above GEM. Just consider this as Vocabulary Enrichment. Hi, Heidi's Mom!! Glad you are enjoying my blog! Guess this is my 15 minutes of fame. And back to my casual observations of life in the (rocky, poorly paved, dangerously driven-on) Slower Lane, and reports of Daily Happenings. Of late, I have been involved in many computer tasks such as trying to download videos about what to do with the friggin' felting needles when they do arrive. IF they arrive. And I am ... read more

At Minerva's her entire family (7 kids +spouses +children) are coming for a big surprise party for her daughter who is getting married. When Vladimir got home he told me his brother Robert will be arriving later in the evening with 2 goats. My stomach lurched. It wouldn't be for the milk,.. So I had some supper and there was Minerva's little granddaughter Hemena. She is between 2 and 3 I'd say. Beautiful curls and lots of talk. She is Robert's daughter. And his wife was there too. Don't know her name yet. After supper I went to read my camera manual a bit in my room with the doors just pulled together when there was a huge commotion outside, the arrival of a truck. About 5 minutes later a lot of squealing. Not human. I ... read more
