Bat catching
examining the nets for bats..... Ranas!
Thats how you say frog in spanish. And as I am doing my Independent Research Project on Strawberry Poison Dart Frogs, I thought it would be appropriate. Don't worry, they aren't toxic to humans. However, apparently if you put them in your mouth it can cause hallucinations. We haven't decided if we're going to try yet. It could be an interesting addition to our research..... 😊
So the project has pretty much been taking up the last few days here. It took a while to form groups and agree on a topic. I am working with three other students. We are researching the difference in escape behavior between male and female frogs. So basically this entails chasing teeny tiny frogs through the forest for a few hours every day. Well its a little more than that. We also record their behavior, gender, and length. Then we set them free. So no frogs are harmed for the sake of science.
I have discovered that Costa Rica is not the best place to come if you are tall. Not complaining here, but I have become used to ducking in order to avoid the numerous amount of spider webs that

major mode of transportation around here are at the level of my face. So warning family members. If you ever come to Costa Rica, I hope you are not afraid of spiders (see picture). Also, there is apparently supposed to be alot of posionous snakes here....but I havent seen one yet. Im not sure if this is concerning or not because maybe they are just really good at camoflauge and I just have been passing them by. Or, my professor who told us that there are posionous snakes everywhere was exaggerating. Because she tends to do that alot.
Well, my camera is officially dead. I have one more thing to try. One of my friends also has a Sony camera, and Im going to see if her battery works in my camera. Otherwise, there will be a hold on the pictures for a while 😞 And I really wish I had it yesterday because there was a sloth right next to the bridge. He or she was just hangin' (literally - they must have really strong arms) and sleepin' on a tree right next to the bridge over the river. It was really cute. And when we came back a few hours later it hadnt

they have trash, recycle, and compost bins. the station is a lot like a campus. moved. Also, to add to my list of observed animals are turtles! It seems like they like to come out after the rain. I saw two on the path when I was running yesterday. One was pretty small, only about an inch or so long. The other one was bigger about 5 inches. They didnt like me picking them up very much, so I put them back right away. Today after our frog chasing I saw what I think was a tayra. It was walking along the path ahead of us and I only saw the last half of it. But Im 95% sure.
This station seems like its going by the fastest. After our independent projects are finished in a few days we have exams and then we go to our homestay! Im excited for the homestay but I think Im more excited for the break. I take that back. I am more excited for the break. I am having serious coast/beach withdrawls. It has been tooooooo long.
Here are some of the few pictures I have of La Selva. I think I'll end up stealing some pics from my friends because I'm not sure if I

waiting for the ots car to pick us up from Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui will have a functioning camera by the time I leave here 😞

Pa's back
Hi sweetie...So sad about your camera. Hope you can figure something out to fix it or borrow another or what???? We still want more pics. Would love to see more w/peeps also. Things here are good, the days seem to go by so fast. Matt went to 9 Corners yesterday for accupuncture treatment but it turned out to be something different. After the examination he was given a treatment of electricity & heat & massage...then sent home w/3 special stretching exercises. He really felt it was good for him & liked Randy Gibson. Gibson also commented on your father & said he had heard such wonderful things about what a good teacher he was & how everybody loved him. So I will do my best to see that Matt does his exercises & we go back next wk. Love those tiny frogs they are so beautiful & fragile. Keep up the good work. Lots of love to you, hasta luego...Grammy & Pa XO
