Less than an hour away from Arenal, we stopped for a hike in the rain forest that involves 2 miles of trails and five or six long suspension bridges through the forest canopy. The trail is very steep, taking you both up and down, and is paved with a honeycomb pattern stone that is there to provide traction in the wet conditions. It works well for that purpose, but it sure is difficult to walk on! With the heat and humidity, and the steep trails, it seems like the longest 2 miles ever. Steve is stubborn, and would not give up, so we hiked the whole trail. Being in the middle of this amazing green rain forest is something that is hard to describe. We had a bit of drizzle, but mostly it was just mist. ... read more

Hola! Barb and I left Atenas yesterday morning on the 9:00 bus, as planned. The half hour ride to Alajuela was uneventful...always a good thing;) Barb was just digging out her phone to call Maria Elena to let her know we were there when she drove up. I just love it when a plan comes together! The drive to La Paz took about an hour and took us through some spectacular country towards Poas Volcano, lush & green with rolling hills dotted with small pueblos with souvenir shops and restaurants to cater to the tourists....which of course we were! On the way we were fortunate to encounter an elderly Tico with his oxen & beautifully painted oxcart alongside the road....obviously in plain sight for tourists passing by who might want to take photos with his cart ... read more

We left San Jose via Taxi headed for La Paz Waterfall after our quick little stay in Pangea. On our way out of the city, we caught a glimpse of a strip along the highway of the surreal looking rainbow eucalyptus trees: trees which naturally have strips of neon green, hot pink, dayglo orange (Susan, that term is for you) highlighter yellow, and bright blue on their trunks. I wasn´t quick enough with my camera to get a picture, but hopefully I will snag one before the trip's end... We were also impressed by the craziness of the Costa Rican street vendors while leaving the city, who were the most literal of all street salesmen you ever did see. These guys stood smack dab in middle of the highway, not on a median mind you, but ... read more

Hi. We forgot to include a couple of pics from the Hummingbird garden when we stayed at the Peace Lodge. It's all part of the same place. We fed the hummingbirds from small feeders right from our own hands. What an experience. There were hundreds if them. All beautiful different species. We had a feeder in our balcony as well. It was a constant buzz of activity. ... read more
