Europe » Serbia » West » Belgrade August 30th 2011

Belgrade is described as edgy and adventurous and it is indeed both and so much more… Lively, arty & with a taste for conviviality which made our two days stop in this city, a truly memorable experience. The advices & tips on where to go from my Serbian colleague Dusan did play a huge role & I cannot be thankful enough for the time he took to prepare an itinerary through his city for us to see not only the “touristic part” but as well simply the places where locals spend time. Getting to Belgrade from Budapest If I had to choose one word to describe the countryside we have been going through during the eight hours train ride between Budapest and Belgrade I guess it would be corn and more corn…Overall flat the north of ... read more

Europe » Hungary » Central Hungary » Budapest August 26th 2011

Budapest, our first stop out of quite a few over the coming three weeks, offered us a combination of all the right ingredients to truly enjoy and discover this beautiful historic city: fantastic weather, friends from Europe and Asia who got together for the wedding of Jeremy & Krisztina & a great little hotel right in the heart of the city that allows us to explore quite a lot on foot. Catching up with friends The very first reason we actually decided to start our road trip in Budapest was the wedding of an old friend from Shanghai Jeremy with Krisztina which he met there. Common friends from that time were present too and somehow it felt like yesterday (and it had actually been quite a few years…). The very first lunch had to be with ... read more

Africa » Egypt » Red Sea » Sharm el-Sheikh May 12th 2011

Said to be one of the most famous wreck in the World, the Thistlegorm is indeed simply an incredible museum piece. 126 meters long, lying at 30 meters in the Gubal Straits (West of the Sinai Peninsula), she offers plenty of possibilities when it comes to its exploration. Wreck diving gives a large space to history as it is precisely history that you get to witness once underwater. A few words about the Thistlegorm The story of the Thistlegorm, a British armed freighter started in April 1940. During that year & the first part of 1941, she went to US to collect steel and aircraft parts, then to Argentine for grains and finally to the West Indies to bring back Rum to England. The Last Voyage started in the midst of the Second World War, when ... read more

Africa » Egypt » Red Sea » Sharm el-Sheikh May 6th 2011

Although one of the most popular dive destination in the world, the Red Sea off the Egyptian coast was somehow still on my “special” wish list, the one that implies that the site be temporarily deserted by tourists. So, I had been patiently waiting for the right occasion & with the events that took place in Egypt, it was somehow now or never! Guess it would be the case still for a little while so for the one of you who simply cannot handle diving with more divers than fish and who had until now put the Red Sea on the side for this precise reason, this is simply the perfect time. From what I could read, Sharm El Sheikh seemed to be the option when it comes to day trip diving: lots of diversity, some ... read more

Middle East » Jordan » West » Al Karak April 16th 2011

Jordan is truly the Promised Land when it comes to outdoor sports in some “virgin territories”. What might look as desert & arid scenery at the first sight is actually filled with hundreds of canyons, waterfalls and underground springs leading to the Dead Sea, possibilities are thus countless. On this sunny Friday, I settled for my first “off the beaten track” canyoneering experience in Jordan with nothing else than the Wadi Assal – nickname “the big one” although by then I didn’t know it yet. Leaving Amman & making our way to Wadi Assal Friday morning 6.20 am, Amman – the day starts with the usual nightmare whenever you need a cab on a Friday early morning. So somehow it was a warm up “trek”, heading on foot to the main streets & keeping my finger ... read more

Africa » Tanzania » Pemba March 25th 2011

Back on the road, after the North of Pemba, time to head to the Fundu Lagoon located in the South of the Island for some Robinson Crusoe experience! The Fundu Lagoon is a very special place, awarded best beach safari in Africa, a place to dream of pirates and treasure, and castaways while enjoying the surrounding nature & pristine silky beach. But just like a hidden jewel, the journey to this piece of Paradise isn’t quite an easy one and this even more in our case as we were coming from the exact opposite! From North to South, we were on for a three hours drive across the island (from airport, it takes about one hour) & as the resort is only accessible by boat although still located on the Pemba peninsula, an additional 25 mn ... read more

Africa » Tanzania » Pemba March 22nd 2011

Going to Pemba feels like reaching the end of the world but if I had to do it again I would not hesitate a second… This island located within the Zanzibar Archipelago off the coast of Tanzania is truly one of these place where you feel like you have discovered a hidden jewel, untouched by tourism & where the environment both above and under the water has kept all its beauty. Known a little bit amongst the divers thanks to the famous marine reserve surrounding Misali island, a 20 mn speed boat ride from the South of Pemba, it is still today a very remote & untouched destination. The number of proper resorts on the island says it all, found six of them including one “hotel” where the only comment on the tripadvisor was “they stole ... read more

Middle East » Jordan » South » Petra March 12th 2011

Some people say that patience is always rewarded… While experiencing Petra with a local Bedouin met along the way, I truly felt just how true this say is… Read lots of blogs before the first few tentative and ended up going there just when I was in a way not planning to. It all started with a long week end in Amman away from Baghdad and two days before flying over Iraq I felt in the mood to go to Petra. So, I just had enough time to get the bus ticket and hotel booking sorted out. The lack of planning gave me the chance to simply follow my instinct, be surprised at every curve & color of majestic Petra, never too sure what to expect next & meet great people along the way which gave ... read more

Middle East » Jordan » North » Jerash December 24th 2010

The ancient part of Jerash city also known as the old Roman city of Gerasa makes a fantastic day trip from Jordan’s capital city Amman. It is considered one of the best preserved Roman cities & indeed the size and level of preservation simply blow your mind! Finding my way around to Jerash, local style For this day trip I decided to opt for a local style transportation as the journey is always a big part of the experience. So no taxi hired (from Amman return, 30-40JD) but instead the local bus system (a minibus which leaves once full, less than 2JD return)…So now, time to practice my still very limited Arabic! After ending up at the wrong place, chatting a bit more with the cab driver & a lady along the road, finally ended up ... read more

Middle East » Jordan » West » Dead Sea December 23rd 2010

« Back » on the road after a few weeks break in France and on for a new humanitarian mission, after one year in North Korea, I have now moved to Baghdad, Iraq! Middle East is now my second home so do expect a lot of blogs from that part of the world ! The first one of this series is dedicated to the Dead Sea in Jordan … Mud, Salt & Sea ! Long week end in Amman before starting my mission, explored already many sites in the capital city and felt like going for a little “escape” from the crowd so when my colleagues mentioned that by the dead sea the temperature would be about 7 degrees warmer than Amman although only at 45mn drive from the capital I made my mind immediately!
