Second part of my Colombian experience, and discovering a bit further everyday just how different Spanish is here! To some extend reminds me of China where one word can mean just so many different things and in Colombia it is no different! Ask for a “Perico” and chances are that you end up with everything but a coffee…as it means as well cocaine, parrots and scramble eggs! Talking about coffee, Colombia is simply THE place to go for to get a proper “Tinto”, “Cafecito”, “Perico” (that one has milk in) or “Oscuro”, a real coffee culture where the coffee is simply so tasty and soft that you simply don’t need to add anything in it! (and I am normally someone who cannot drink coffee without sugar…) Now, when it comes to coffee and if you are ... read more

South America » Colombia » Bogota August 26th 2012

The spirit of any city is quite often found in its streets, a mix of the people you encounter, the food stalls, the architecture, the music & well not the least of all, its urban art. After Berlin, here I am again in place where the streets speak to every day people! In Bogota, there is a wealth of it, intense, quite often taking strong stance on politics, war, the power of media or intra family violence. Street art is in Bogota the voice of and to the people, and a full part of Bogota vibe…which is precisely the reason why I decided to explore it during the 10 days I spent in the city (ok got to admit...in between daily classes of Colombian salsa, one doesn’t change!) A few words about Bogota’s street art… It ... read more

Europe » Germany » Berlin » Berlin July 3rd 2012

A few days in Berlin and absolutely not in the mood for yet more museum, churches or traditional architecture, guess it was a good thing as when it comes to art, the streets of Berlin are the “galleries”. Now, I didn’t feel like joining one of the numerous street art tour but rather like going and explore on our own and go along the way slightly more underground, the great thing was that Christophe who joined me for that part of the trip was exactly in the same state of mind! Sport shoes and sweaters on, off to Berlin arty street scene we went! Starting with the touristy part... One has to start somewhere and for a first timer in Berlin, the East Side Gallery known for the largest remaining Wall section painted by artists from ... read more

Europe » Italy » Veneto » Venice June 26th 2012

And here comes Venice! Although a must see, I had somehow always managed to skip it to go for less touristy destination, having this pre conceived idea of a place where one could only find hordes of tourist and honeymoon couples… Well time to time guess it is a good idea, to ignore whatever you might have heard before and give it a try (ok and it was kind of on my way to Austria too…) Ah the freedom of road trip…until you actually need to park the car! Driving freely from one place to another is one my favorite way of traveling, just after the bus/ train rides where you got the added bonus to meet locals, but when it comes to Venice, a bit of advanced planning is needed if you don’t want to ... read more

Europe » Italy » Lombardy » Milan June 24th 2012

After 18 months in Baghdad, where my concept of personal freedom had been somehow scaled down, the idea of a road trip around Europe was very tempting. A month to explore, enjoy life, meet new and old friends & most of all cheer every moment, definitely something I relate to! Marta’s annual party in Poland was the trigger to this trip, I would not have missed it for anything in this world but decided to come through the long way from France by car through Italy, Austria, Czechoslovakia & Germany. Nice, France – a fresh start… Although the trip technically started on the other side of France, Bordeaux that is, feel like Nice was the real beginning of it, a happy one as I catch up with one of my closest friend Sophie and not so ... read more

Middle East » Iraq » East » Babylon April 14th 2012

After nearly one year and half in Iraq, mostly in Baghdad, this Saturday morning felt special. On the road for a 10 days trip across South Iraq visiting our different structures, this is the one day where I am actually about to go out, not to visit one of the projects, got a few of them already lined up during week days but to go and visit the one and only Babylon. Never thought that this opportunity would come true and here I am pulling my hair up in a chignon style, fixing tightly a light color scarf over it & wrapping it up around the chignon. Outside, temperatures are approaching the forty degrees and wearing the full on abaya, it can quickly become hell for any women to stand under the heat, so short sleeves ... read more

Asia » India » Kerala » Alleppey February 24th 2012

After stunning Munnar and its sea of tea plantation, time to go back to the Indian coast, white deserted beach and quiet backwaters are on the program before catching up with one of my closest friend Pauline at Amma Ashram. Far from the hustle and bustle of Indian cities, Kerala country side has this special something that makes you feel serene. No rush here or jumping from one tourist spot to another but a slow path travel where one takes the time to enjoy simple day to day life taking place all around, the colors & scents of the spices, the smile and waving of people met along the way & the every second peace. On the map, most of the small towns seem to be near from each other but somehow I had this feeling ... read more

Kerala, « god’s own country » as you can read on every street sign, tuk tuk, buses and travel agency window is at the image of India, diverse & vibrant. So diverse that I simply cannot summarize my trip to this part of India into one blog so here we go…part 1, going inland in a lookout for peace and quiet ready to discover Munnar tea plantation and its heartwarming sea of green and silent mountains. Reaching Munnar & feeling home already After four hours on the busy and curvy road that goes from Cochin to Munnar, bypassing constantly tuk tuk, buses and trucks, the arrival in Munnar Royal Mist Home Stayfelt like reaching paradise. Europe » Bosnia & Herzegovina » East » Sarajevo September 3rd 2011

Over the years, when thinking of Sarajevo, I somehow always recall the tragic events of the 90’s. My understanding of the events people went through during those years was quite modest, but I always wished I could one day walk in its streets, meet & chat with locals and along the way grasp a bit more knowledge about Sarajevo complex history while discovering the new Sarajevo. Without going back to those years in too many details (many have done it & will do it in much better ways that I would ever be able to), I wish in this blog to share stories & impressions gather during our stay. First impressions…our arrival Reaching Sarajevo after having crossed the tortuous mountain chain that separate Bosnia from Serbia, brought to reality the little understanding I had of the ... read more

White water rafting might not be the first thing that come to your mind when you think of Bosnia & Hercegovina but the minute we found out that there was indeed great rivers, it didn’t take us much time to make up our mind! Like a gem hidden deep into narrow valleys, rivers sculpt the Bosnian country side, giving him colors & intensity while once on it, it offers one of the most beautiful scenic rafting I got to do so far. Back in the bus – the Sarajevo to Konjic drive Our day trip to Konjic which can be done either from Sarajevo or Mostar (one hour and half drive) took us in bus high up in the mountain along the Neretva river on a brand new narrow & curvy road. Having crossed the day ... read more
