A year in North Korea of which 6 months during which the Mass Games the biggest human choreographed spectacle in the world unfolded itself in front of my eyes from the preparation stage during the bitter cold days in February to the Grand Opening on August 2nd. This blog is a personal testimony of those days, no crispy travel anecdotes nor road trip but personal impression & experience of the life in Pyongyang, North Korea through the Arirang which to this date I have found no equivalent anywhere else in the world. A few things to start with about the Arirang (Mass Games in North Korea) Scale: Up to 100’000 gymnasts and 15’000 kids from Pyongyang schools Duration: 6 months of preparation followed by performances shown 3 to 4 times a week during 2 months Meaning: ... read more

So where are you spending your next 9 days break? My brother asked over the phone expecting as usual I would go for yet another exotic remote place, well not this time! Canada??!! What!!?? Aren’t you going to get bored? Well, I am glad to say it was everything but boring: fantastic time with my dear friend Ivette, open air concerts, adrenaline rush in the wilds, beautiful city & landscapes & the food…simply mouth watering! Asking for more! Chill out time Well not so chilled actually as the very reason I decided to go to Montreal was to catch up with Ivette, a very close friend from Shanghai who spend every summer in Canada and that I hadn’t seen for 6 months! So the moment I got to her house, it was champagne, laugh, dancing, midnight ... read more

Asia » North Korea » Panmunjom June 28th 2010

Altough I had read many blogs about trips from South Korea side to the Korean Demilitarized Zone, having the opportunity to visit this historic & still front page news site from the North Korea side had somehow awaken once more my curiosity!! So, on this Sunday menu…. As a starter, a great two and half hours drive all the way from Pyongyang across the countryside For the main course, the visit of the Joint Security Area (Panmunjom), the room where the armistice was signed (on North Korean territory) and its small museum Finally, as a dessert, a fantastic "picnic" Koryo dynasty style along the waterfall of Kaesong forest followed by a small hike and some fun in the waterfall pool. This trip was as well the occasion to spend some quality time with the entire team ... read more

Nearly 9 months living & working in Pyongyang, North Korea so guess it was about time to make a little excursion to the Pyongyang zoo! Weather is now fantastic and the sunny Sundays are a great occasion to discover some of the sites which might not have been as pleasant during the winter when the thermometer was closer to the minus 20 degrees! The Pyongyang zoo is located on the North East outskirt of the city surrounded by hills covered with forest and fields. The road leading to it, a massive 8 lines highway is absolutely empty…not much surprise here, as although the number of vehicles have increased in Pyongyang, most of them are not allowed to drive on Sunday so we had the road for ourselves (on both way!). Didn’t really know what to expect ... read more

Back in Kathmandu & part 2 of our “you better enjoy walking as it is THE only way to go around” trip. The Maoist national strike was still ongoing but just like during our stay in Pokhara we were very much motivated to find ways to enjoy and discover the mythic city of Kathmandu! Airport “transfer”(on foot) across Pashupatinath and its sadhus, cremation & monkeys! Morning arrival in Kathmandu, and on foot we went. Truly starting to get used to it and somehow felt like it is a fantastic way to get to enter Kathmandu city, discovering it at a slow pace and enjoying the sight of simple daily life moments. Heading to the Tibetan part of the city known as Boudhanath (or simply Bodha), located about 10km east from the very touristy Tamel. Great news ... read more

Nepal…an other place that had been on the wish list for quite a while but this time the least I could say is that I was absolutely not expecting to land on the very first day the Maoist declared a national strike, also called “Bandh” … This trip was mostly about experiencing some of the best white water rafting in the world with a five days descent/ camping planned while enjoying the legendary Nepalese hospitality & amazing vista ...mmm…Got a lot of the last two but didn’t see a paddle! Kathmandu, midnight, landing on the first day of the National Strike… Long flight….North Korea Pyongyang - Beijing - Kunming - Kathmandu...pfff finally on for a nice long week of compensation leave! Well…the moment we exit from the airport, my flatmate Anne Catherine and I started to ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Sulawesi » Bunaken National Park February 17th 2010

Part 2 of the diving trip around North Sulawasi, after the black sandy volcano bottom and the crazy critter heaven that was Lembeh Strait, I was in for Bunaken island and its superb healthy corals, marine bio diversity and dramatic walls. About 35 mn by speed boat from Manado, the Bunaken National Marine Park was one of the country’s first marine parks and includes five islands one of these, the Manado Tue islands is an extinct volcano covered as all the other islands by a thick and lush forest. The main island where most of the resorts are located is surrounded by diving sites which have made this tiny piece of paradise world known among the divers so I was in again for a very relax holiday which essentially involves lots of time under the water ... read more

The word “muck diving” might not say much to most people but once you have tried it you never turn back! It is a little bit like opening a diving book that shows hundreds of weird critters, all with funny colors and shape except that you experience the real thing… Lembeh Strait to that extend is THE place to discover species that you have never seen before, so camera gears all set, ready for some national geographic type of experience! About two hours from Manado, driving trough North Sulawasie, and then taking a short 15mn boat ride lies the island of Lembeh. Its strait separating it from the mainland is covered with healthy coral reef and the notorious black sandy volcano bottom which with a lot of patience and the macro mode on reveals its secrets ... read more

Every day is a new experience and this first week end trip (early December 2009) outside of Pyongyang, North Korea, brought nothing but positive feel. DPRK country side beauty had remained something of a mystery, although I had read about it, actually living in DPRK, I was truly looking forward to the first opportunity to get out of the city and explore unspoiled nature areas and see more of the country side. This trip was as well to allow us to visit the International Friendship Exhibition where gifts from all around the world to Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il are being displayed, a state of the art architectural complex and a one of a kind cultural experience! Unspoiled mountain, first snow and colourful sunset All about luck and indeed in the morning of our ... read more

Visiting lots of new places lately but felt like Annecy truly deserve a blog so here it is! Annecy, famous for its stunning lake set on a mountain background and charming village, has somehow managed to get the best out of its Geneva heritage and French location. Located only 35 km south of Geneva, it is the perfect week end destination for nature & sport lover! This week end was full of laugh and emotions as it was the occasion to catch up with my cousin Marlene who lives in Albertville and meet with her lovely family. Another traveler in the family so not easy to end up in the same place in the same time but when we do we make the best out of it! Chilled out Saturday with lots to catch up and ... read more
